PepsiCo, Unilever sell lower quality products in India, finds report https://www.business-standard.com/india-news/pe...
A health rating system found that the average score for products across 30 companies was 1.8 out of 5 for low-income countries, while it was 2.3 for high-income countries
The report assessed 30 companies like Pepsico.
A new report shows that major food and drink companies sell less healthy products in low-income countries like India, triggering concerns about the impact of such products on the population’s health.
According to a global index published by Access to Nutrition Initiative (ATNI), Nestle, Pepsico and Unilever were among the companies, which were found to be selling products in low-income countries with lower scores on a health rating system.
The rating system developed in Australia and New Zealand found that the average score was 1.8 out of 5 for low-income countries, while it was 2.3 for high-income countries. Under the system, products with a score above 3.5 are considered healthy.
The non-profit group assessed 30 such companies.
“It’s a very clear picture that what these companies are selling in the poorest countries in the world, where they are more and more active, are not healthy products,” said Mark Wijne, research director at ATNI, in an interview with Reuters, urging the governments to be more vigilant.
This marked the first instance when the index split the assessment into low and high-income countries, revealing the shocking figures.

Ye to sabko pata hi hai. Their profit margins here are still huge despite selling at cheap prices (as compared to developed countries) so its expected that they use lower quality ingredients.
Rise of Campa Cola business has begun.

In Europe, Australia where regulators are more serious about consumer safety and enforcement is done in a better manner and at a larger level..
things are and will remain better.
Here, when even the vacancies for teachers, doctors do not get filled.. it is not surprising for regulators to not have even half the required staff.

Unilever sells most third grade products from decades. They spends billions on manipulative ad marketing.
I stopped using their products.
all foreign companies especially CPG never produce the same quality, especially eatables and easily put the blame on the sourcing of raw materials, e.g. Cadbury's DairyMilk chocolates purchased in UK have the original recipe from John Cadbury whereas the ones you get here are totally different and not even 1/5th of the UK taste, plus dirty tactics by them in India where they have further reduced the quality and quantity and say we are still retaining the same price and sell DairyMilk brand and have introduced Silk which is higher priced and you don't find it in UK (even Silk is no where close to UK's DairyMilk taste)
First world quality needs first world price. Cheaper the price, cheaper the quality.
Quality and taste of Cadbury, Mars chocolates sold here is vastly different than those sold in European countries (personal experience). They have laws protecting consumers and they are strict about it. We too have the laws but only on paper.
What is new in this ? It is well knows fact, e.g. Coco cola, Dominos and other brands products are very different in developed countries compared to developing countries.
It also depends on the Food regulator in the country , European and other developed countries are very stringent about their guidelines. So the companies follow them to stay in that country.
Do you think FSSAI in India or India's pharma regulator are strict?
Check the final outcome of the masala issue which recently happened, you'll be surprised.
1 USD is now almost INR 85(40 * 2.125😉) up by 20% in just last 5 years, due to geopolitics and RBI prioritizing mandatory(external debt position) amount of forex reserves by purchasing a lot of USD, which also helps in export growth via depreciation.
Apart from inflation due to supply chain issues and wage growth, this policy will certainly bring high inflation on imported and MNC products due to repatriation of profits in USD, giving advantage to domestic players.
There is also GST of 28%+12% cess on carbonated drinks and 18% on most packaged FMCG.
If the tax exclusive price in USD terms of MNC/imported products sold in India is same in PPP terms but still at lower quality than sold in the West, the regulator FSSAI and government must intervene.
MNCs and Brands have full liberty to misguide and misinform thru advertising and other mediums to the public because of Rooten and Corrupt System in our country since more than half century
