Hey guys,

Hope you all are in good condition,

I am planning to close my primary phone number, I am concerned and wanted to know what will happen to those “n”  number of apps and websites which I used to login with this  number, should I delete all the accounts which i had opened with this number. The problem is I can  remember very few apps and websites where I used this number while registration.

And suppose if my number is allotted to someone else then he or she might use my number to re-login to those apps and websites.

Thanks in advance

change mobile number in all those apps… to your secondary number and then close

OP needs soln to this.

Ideally govt should not allow re-allocation of a phone number for alteast 50 years or more for security purpose. Yes this might cause scarcity of numbers.

Other option, All the online registration including bank should delete the accounts/access to accounts with a phone number if there is not a single transaction (and sms is also not getting delivered for x years, say 5) and the telecom and can re-assign after 5 years.

To much to ask Indian Govt.

Keep the primary number for 3-6 months and get a new number and start using it. In this time, u will get to know whichever apps u logged in by primary number and change it to new number. Some apps might be missed but u can get 90% of them working

Yes. It needs to be min 3 4 months or more and much deliberation. Start switch early and be safe. Govt se kuch expect na karein

Example: My money was stuck in phonepe gold when I closed my old no, it was pure luck that I got it back, else would have lost thousands.

What? Did you mean, you forget to sell your gold before closing your phonepe account?

Essentially the new number should be updated in the following places for sure before closing the primary number:

  • Aadhar Card account
  • Pan Card account
  • All the banks for which you have accounts, credit cards, etc.
  • All the wallets you use e.g. Amazon Pay, Google Pay, PayTM etc.
  • All the utilities for which you pay bills for i.e. Broadband connection, Electricity, Gas, etc.
  • All social media account like Facebook, Twitter, Instagram since now every company needs a phone number for account recovery as the first option.
  • Gmail and Google – If you have any accounts here

Additionally, look through all the past SMS that you have received in your phone having the primary connection. If you identify having an account with the company that has sent you any SMS, then simply visit that website (if any) and get the number updated or try to find the customer care number to call in and ask them to update or guide you how to update the phone number in your profile.

From Last 4 years, many apps have changed their log in policy from Email&password to Mobile&OTP. It’s difficult to remember the apps where we might have given mobile number as password recovery method. Keep using it as secondary number for at least an year to safeguard important accounts.

Ya, you are right, lot of companies are changing their login criteria from usual username/password method to otp based login to phase out phishing or to safeguard from scammers. That’s why we have think while registering with an app, and have to avoid registering with multiple apps just for the sake of cheap loots.

You cannot “cancel” your number. Stop using it and it will be allotted to someone else after some time.

I don’t know this but, once I had asked the cc regarding closing of sim card, he said they will definitely take the request on customer’s call. But that’s not my query actually, I asked if my number is allotted to someone else then they might use my number to relogin and use my information against me.

Port your mobile number to another Network and then deactivate the number. Then the number won’t be allotted to any person in future.

Also some financial institutions and vendors do not allow changing number (I know freecharge did this to me)

They are so blunt and say, You can open a new account with the new number and different email.

Something that developers and managers want to re-think the trouble it introduces and security concerns from end user perspective.

You can use the below two options to gradually port everything to your new primary number from old primary number

1. port old primary number to airtel prepaid.. recharge cheapest smart pack 48/49 every 6 months

2a. delete saved bank/payment information on all the apps linked to this number
2b. try to update mobile numbers on all the app accounts
2c. try to close all the app accounts
