I’ve 2 queries regarding HDFC Smartbuy :

Query #1 :

I’ve Regalia CC, which has 2k monthly limit of cashback. So, in case, I purchased an item of Rs. 30,000 from Amazon which means Rs. 1,500 cashback if bought via HDFC Smartbuy. Now, I returned the product and purchased the same product again, will I get Rs. 1,500 cashback or Rs. 500 (Rs. 2,000 – Rs. 1,500 = Rs. 500).

Query #2 :

I purchased a product from Amazon via HDFC Smartbuy from iPhone and generally in Android, it doesn’t go to app from Smartbuy but in iPhone it did. Although the landing page was of Smartbuy within Amazon, so, I proceeded ahead, bought the product worth Rs. 30,000 and I got an SMS saying I didn’t purchased from my credit card ending in XXXX and missed out on 5% cashback. Interestingly, I did purchase from HDFC credit card only and HDFC hasn’t given me cashback yet. Did all this happen because Smartbuy redirected to Amazon app rather than browser?

I guess these 2 questions shall help many others for future transactions via Smartbuy on Amazon.

You will get 1500 cashback. For the second one , always make sure while on payment page that the merchant name is showing as smart buy. Only then you will get cashback.

1 :: In case of cashback reversal you will get ₹500 only as HDFC system calculate the cashback on total purchase and deduct reversal cashback.
2 :: Check if you get the OTP for this transaction from SmartBuy not from Amazon!!!

I bought a phone last month 19k , got cancelled and i bought it again. Still got full cashback on 19k

Not yet , I’m also new to hdfc cc space and might now know much. May be completely wrong.

If you return the product, they will reverse Rs.1500 from smartbuy cashback and it will show as debit entry in CC statement. Also you won’t be eleigible for 1500 again on return. Max. 500 will be given.

Query 2. Yes redirecrtion is a problem on phone. That’s why I always used laptop for smartbuy purchases. never faced problem of no cashback.

Can you add a screenshot of the same?

I am not sure how to check the merchant name.

i am using iphone, and i only purchase with private window of chrome. Never missed smartbuy, best way is browser, if it redirects you to app then only few percent chances. Private window never redirects to app and hence 99% sure.

I’ve always ordered from my Android phone and this is probably for the first time I was redirected to app and this happened.

But, isn’t this hit and miss fault of HDFC ??

Like, I followed all the things, kept cart empty, landed on Amazon via Smartbuy and used HDFC CC/DC … yet their system fails to recognize it as a Smartbuy transaction and the only way to verify is by checking merchant’s name on payment page.

I’m a software developer, I can understand and go through this from next time onwards, others who are enough tech savvy or aware can also do this but think of a layman, that person will be so bloody disappointed and he won’t even understand what happened.

In this case, HDFC representatives aren’t even helping because they’re saying I didn’t follow all the steps. To them, there’s no proof/record that I even went via Smartbuy or not but I clearly remember landing on HDFC Smartbuy page within Amazon.

I’m so-so pissed off because I lost a lot of money in this purchase. All of this because of stupid delivery guy (long story, can share if demanded).

That’s a good tip but this may cause trouble for items in lightning deals.

I’ve observed at times that if you add a product and cancel transaction, the item shows as claimed in lightning deal and then you’re unable to claim it at lightning deal price. I’m not sure of exact series of events but something similar has happened with me.

Ultimately, I feel Smartbuy needs to fix this issue or safest is going via browser route. The moment Smartbuy opens Amazon app, I’m not going to move ahead with the process, ever!

Thanks for the heads up about the lightning deal issue. Will keep it in mind if i ever try to claim one.

cashback reversal can happen even after a few months.

AFAIK Amazon doesn’t provide affiliate tracking option via app. So not just Smartbuy, no other affiliate will provide cb if redirected to app.

After quite a long time saw a neatly written systematic post of the problem and all relevant facts..: not aadhaa adhura which unfortunately has become commonplace on dimes forum 😑

Tried 2 times opening the link on external (bank site) both times merchant was Amazon. Time was running out so placed the order.
