Second Batch Of Russian COVID-19 Vaccine Sputnik V Reaches Hyderabad

Russian Ambassador to India Nikolay Kudashev termed the delivery of the second consignment of Sputnik V vaccine in the country very timely

The second shipment of Russia’s COVID-19 vaccine Sputnik V arrived in India on Sunday morning, May 16. Sputnik is among the three coronavirus vaccines approved in India, along with two other inoculations – Covishield of Serum Institute of India, and Covaxin of Bharat Biotech.

It is also the first foreign-made vaccine to be permitted for use in India. As the second consignment landed in Hyderabad, Telangana, Russian Ambassador to India Nikolay Kudashev said the Russia-India fight against coronavirus is an example of the special and exclusive strategic partnership between the two countries and an effectual model of international anti-pandemic cooperation.

“We are very happy to see that the Russian-Indian joint fight against the COVID-19, which is one of the vital areas of our bilateral cooperation nowadays, has firmly stood on rails and moving forward,” the Russian envoy stated.

Vaccination with Sputnik V started in Hyderabad on May 14. Drug firm Dr Reddy’s Laboratories launched the vaccine in the Indian market with the first dose being administered as part of a limited pilot.

The company said the imported doses of the vaccine are presently priced at a maximum retail price of Rs 948, with 5 per cent GST per dose, amounting to Rs 995.4 per dose. The first consignment of imported doses of the Sputnik V vaccine landed in India on May 1.

The Russian envoy also disclosed that plans are afoot to introduce Sputnik Lite, a single-dose vaccine, soon in India.

Dr Reddy’s is working closely with its six manufacturing partners in India to fulfill regulatory requirements to ensure smooth and timely supply, the company said.

Covaxin effective against India, UK coronavirus strains, says Bharat Biotech

Bharat Biotech on Sunday said its COVID-19 vaccine ‘Covaxin’ has been found to be effective against coronavirus strains found in India and the UK. Citing a study published in peer-reviewed medical journal Clinical Infectious Diseases, the Hyderabad-based vaccine major noted that vaccination with Covaxin produced neutralising titres against all key emerging variants tested, including B.1.617 and B.1.1.7, first identified in India and the UK, respectively.

The study was conducted in collaboration with the National Institute of Virology and Indian Council of Medical Research, it added. “Covaxin gets international recognition yet again, by scientific research data published demonstrating protection against the new variants. Yet another feather in its cap,” Bharat Biotech co-founder and Joint Managing Director Suchitra Ella said in a tweet.

She also tagged PMO India, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman and Health Minister Harsh Vardhan, among others, in the tweet. (PTI)

First batch of DRDO’s anti-Covid drug to be released on Monday, May 17

The first batch of anti-COVID drug 2-DG, developed by the DRDO, will be released on Monday, May 17 by defence minister Rajnath Singh and health minister Harsh Vardhan, officials said.

The Drugs Controller General of India (DGCI) has approved the oral drug for emergency use as an adjunct therapy in moderate to severe coronavirus patients, the defence ministry said earlier this month.

Defence minister Rajnath Singh and Union health minister Dr Harsh Vardhan release first batch of anti-Covid drug 2DG developed by DRDO

Will DRDO’s 2DG medicine work against COVID variants?

10,000 doses of an anti-COVID-19 therapeutic application of the drug 2-deoxy-D-glucose (2-DG), developed by the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) for treatment of Covid-19 released by Defence Minister Rajnath Singh.

The first batch of the drug released by Rajnath Singh and Dr Harsh Vardhan at an event at the headquarters of the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO).

The Drugs Controller General of India (DGCI) has approved the oral drug for emergency use as an adjunct therapy in moderate to severe coronavirus patients, the defence ministry said earlier this month.

The approval of the drug has come at a time when India is grappling with a record-breaking wave of the coronavirus pandemic that has stretched the country’s healthcare infrastructure to its limit.

DRDO’s 2-DG manufacturer

The oral drug has been developed by Institute of Nuclear Medicine and Allied Sciences (INMAS), a lab of Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), in collaboration with Dr Reddy’s Laboratories (DRL), Hyderabad.

DRDO anti-covid drug: Dosage and how it works

The drug comes in a powder form in a sachet and is taken orally by dissolving it in water. The drug accumulates in the virus-infected cells and prevents virus growth by stopping viral synthesis and energy production. The drug will stop the virus from multiplying.

DRDO anti-covid drug price

The pricing will be determined by Dr Reddy’s laboratories, which is manufacturing the doses.

Will DRDO’s 2DG medicine work against COVID variants?

According to the clinical trials, the drug is supposed to arrest any variant as a multiplying virus, irrespective of variant, will need food and thus will get trapped by the drug.

Will DRDO’s 2-DG drug be a game changer?

DRDO’s anti-covid drug is seen as a game changer as it helps in faster recovery of hospitalised patients and reduces supplemental oxygen dependence.

“In 2-DG arm, significantly higher proportion of patients improved symptomatically and became free from supplemental oxygen dependence (42% vs 31%) by Day-3 in comparison to SoC, indicating an early relief from oxygen therapy/dependence. The similar trend was observed in patients aged more than 65 years,” the DRDO said.

This comes as a boon amid the devastating second COVID-19 wave, where a large number of patients are facing severe oxygen dependency and need hospitalisation.

A higher proportion of patients treated with 2-DG showed RT-PCR negative conversion in COVID patients. In efficacy trends, the patients treated with 2-DG showed faster symptomatic cure than Standard of Care (SoC) on various endpoints, the DRDO said.

UP extends 18+ vaccination drive to 5 more districts

While many states have curtailed the vaccination in the 18-44 years’ age group, citing lack of vaccines, the Uttar Pradesh government is preparing to expand the drive in this age group from Monday.

According to the government spokesman, vaccination for 18 plus group will be conducted in 23 districts of the state from May 17.

The 23 districts include Aligarh, Agra, Prayagraj, Kanpur, Ghaziabad, Gorakhpur, Jhansi, Bareilly, Meerut, Moradabad, Lucknow, Varanasi, Saharanpur, Firozabad, Mathura-Vrindavan, Ayodhya, Shahjahanpur, Gautam Buddha Nagar, Mirzapur, Banda, Gonda, Azamgarh and Basti.

Five more districts have been included in the campaign and these include Mirzapur, Banda, Gonda, Azamgarh and Basti. Earlier, 18 districts had initiated the vaccination campaign in the 18-44 age group.

The state government has placed orders for the supply of one crore Covid vaccine doses — 50 lakh doses from Hyderabad-based Bharat Biotech International Limited that manufactures Covaxin and 50 lakh doses from the Pune-based Serum Institute of India (SII) that makes Covishield.

The state has received 3.50 lakh doses of Covishield from SII and 1.50 lakh doses of Covaxin from Bharat Biotech so far.

The state government had floated a global tender for 40 million vaccine doses, earlier this month, to meet its huge requirement of vaccine doses.

Sputnik V has been priced at Rs 948 + 5 per cent GST per dose, amounting to Rs 995. However, the vaccine is being administered at a price of Rs 1,250 per dose at Jubilee Hills Apollo, Hyderabad

Russian coronavirus vaccine Sputnik V that was launched for the vaccination drive in India on Friday is now available on the CoWIN portal. However, it must be mentioned that the vaccine is not currently slotted in any of the centres. The vaccine is being administered at the Apollo Hospital at Jubilee Hills in Hyderabad but only for beneficiaries above 45 years. At the time of publishing all the slots in Apollo — paid — were booked.

Registration on the portal is mandatory for vaccination of people aged 18-44 years. The portal offers a series of tabs including Age 18+, Age 45+, Covishield, Covaxin, Sputnik V, Free and Paid now.

The first dose of the COVID-19 vaccine was administered on Friday in Hyderabad. Sputnik V has been priced at Rs 948 + 5 per cent GST per dose, amounting to Rs 995. However, the vaccine is being administered at a price of Rs 1,250 per dose at Jubilee Hills Apollo.

The Russian Direct Investment Fund (RDIF) plans to start manufacturing of the vaccine in India subsequently. The RDIF has said that once it is manufactured in India, the prices will drop.

The central government had earlier said that the vaccine will be available from this week. So it is likely that more centres will be updated with the vaccine soon. “I’m happy to say that we’re hopeful that it’ll be available in the market next week. We’re hopeful that the sale of the limited supply that has come from there (Russia), will begin next week,” Niti Aayog member VK Paul said.

The RDIF is also planning to soon bring its one-dose vaccine Sputnik V Light to India. RDIF CEO Kirill Dmitriev said, “We hope for the introduction of Sputnik V Light in India soon.” Sputnik Light is a single-dose COVID-19 vaccine. It could become the first such vaccine to be released in the country.

Just heard thr news of Dr KK Agarwal death. He took both doses of covishield. A few days back another doctor of Saroj Multi-speciality hospital delhi, died, even after taking both dose. Every few day, new research comes about efficacy of these vaccines. Earlier it was stated that almost no patient was hospitalized in ICU for severe condition, if he has taken both vaccine irrespective of manufacturer. Also earlier chief scientist of WHO stated that current vaccine in India is not effective on two variants of double mutant virus, later she rectified by saying we need to upgrade the vaccine and everyone needs to take vaccine.

Those who are yet to take vaccine, are finding it difficult for the slot. And others who have taken 1 or both are in dilemma of what to expect as u can’t change vaccine now.

Defer vaccination by three months after recovering from Covid-19, says Health Ministry

The Union Health Ministry Wednesday came up with new guidelines on Covid-19 vaccination, stating four specific categories of individuals should defer Covid-19 vaccination.

Those who have tested positive for the virus should defer the vaccine by three months after recovery. For those who have got Covid-19 after getting their first vaccine dose, the ministry recommended deferring the second dose by 3 months after recovery.

The new guidelines recommended to the states that persons with any other serious general illness requiring hospitalization or ICU care should also wait for 4-8 weeks before getting the Covid-19 vaccine. It is to be noted those who have severe comorbities, including cancer, should not defer vaccination; however, only those who have been hospitalised or have undergone treatment for the comorbidities in critical care should defer vaccination.

In addition to the above categories, the new recommendations also state that in Covid-19 patients who have been given anti-SARS-2 monoclonal antibodies or convalescent plasma – Covid-19 vaccination is to be deferred by three months from the date of discharge from the hospital.

Drive-in Covid-19 vaccinations centres in these cities in India.

At a time when India is battling one of the deadliest pandemic, where the only ay of hope for the citizens is to get themselves inoculated. For a country with a 1.3 billion population, it’s a humongous task. Few cities have come up with drive-in vaccination centres where people can get their doses inside their vehicles.

With such designated vaccine drive-in facilities outside hospitals and clinics, the stress on the medical staff and infrastructure at hospitals can reduce. Drive-in vaccination centres will encourage people to get vaccinated at the earliest without compromising themselves from coming into contact with other citizens.

Here’s a list of the cities that already have operating drive-in vaccination centres:

Noida: Drive-through vaccination against COVID-19 for people aged 45 years and above was started at two places in Gautam Buddh Nagar. The service has been launched at DLF Mall of India in Noida and the Shaheed Pathik stadium in Greater Noida. According to officials, to avail of the service, people need to register their slots through the CoWIN portal at either of the locations and reach the designated venue on schedule.

Odisha: Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation (BMC) has four drive-in vaccination centres for people above 45 years of age who are yet to receive the second dose of the COVID-19 vaccine.

Mumbai: Maharashtra’s first drive-in vaccination centre started in Mumbai earlier this month. The vaccination centre is located in Dadar West, at the Kohinoor public parking centre. BrihanMumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) is planning to open in each of seven administrative regions of the city. Those above 60 years can get vaccinated at drive-in centres only by appointment, and they shall not drive themselves but will be accompanied by an attendant or a driver, the municipal commissioner said in an order.

Bhopal: A drive-in vaccination centre was started in Bhopal’s Ashoka Hotel when the third phase of the COVID-19 vaccination drive commenced. Some months ago, this place served as a drive-in cinema, where people could watch movies while sitting in the comfort of their vehicle. The place which now serves as a COVID vaccination centre in the city is an appropriate area to accommodate several cars entering in a queue. Meanwhile, it also helps in maintaining social distancing and evades the possibility of people thronging at the centre. The vaccination centre is open between 5 pm and 8 pm for which an online registration through CoWIN website or the Aarogya Setu app is mandatory.

Gurgaon: Park+, an app-based startup has organised drive-in vaccination camps in Gurugram at three locations – Ambience mall, DLF City centre and DLF Cyber hub. These malls will allow citizens only through prior appointments and the booking can be done on CoWIN portal. These drive-in centres are offering the first dose of vaccination only to people above 45 years of age.

Delhi: The Delhi High Court has directed the Centre and Delhi government to treat as a representation a PIL seeking setting up of drive-in vaccination centres in open areas, including stadiums, as has been done in Mumbai

Centre Allows On-Site Registration for Those Above 18 at Govt Vaccination Centres

This, the government said, was to use “some doses… left unutilised in case online appointee beneficiaries do not turn up on day of vaccination”.

The Centre on Monday gave its nod to on-site, or walk-in, registration of “a few beneficiaries" in the 18-44 age group at government-run Covid vaccination facilities to “minimise vaccine wastage".

The step would help use “some doses… left unutilised in case online appointee beneficiaries do not turn up on day of vaccination", the government said.

The facility of only online appointment mode given initially to people in the age group of 18 to 44 years helped to avoid overcrowding at the vaccination centres, said the ministry.

“This feature will be used only upon the decision of the respective State/UT Government to do so. State/UT must decide on the opening of on-site registrations/facilitated cohorts’ registration and appointments for 18-44 years age group based on the local context just as an additional measure to minimize vaccine wastage and for facilitating vaccination of eligible beneficiaries in the age group 18-44 years," the ministry said in a statement.

‘Made-in-India Nasal Vaccines Could be Game Changer’

Dr Soumya Swaminathan insisted that till anti-Covid vaccines are available for children, teachers need to be vaccinated on priority and schools be reopened only when community transmission is down.

Nasal vaccines, which are being made in India, could be game changers for children. However, it may not be available this year, said World Health Organization’s chief scientist Soumya Swaminathan. The hope comes amid concerns over a probable third wave of the coronavirus pandemic hitting the children.

“Some of the nasal vaccines that are going to be made in India could be game changers for children — easy to administer, will give you local immunity in the respiratory tract," Swaminathan, a paediatrician, said in an exclusive conversation to CNN-News18.

She, however, insisted that till then more and more adults, especially teachers, need to be vaccinated and schools be reopened only when risk of community transmission is low. “I am very hopeful that ultimately we’ll have vaccine for children. But that’s not going to happen this year, and we should open schools when community transmission is down. That’s what rest of the countries have done, with other precautions. And if teachers are vaccinated, that would be a big step forward," WHO’s top scientist added.

The Centre on Saturday said children are not immune from the infection, but stressed that the impact is minimal. “If children get affected by Covid, either there will be no symptoms or there will be minimal symptoms. They do not require hospitalisation generally," Niti Aayog (health) member VK Paul said during the press briefing of the Union health ministry.

He added that health infrastructure should be ramped up to treat Covid-19 among children, but it is most important to not let them become a part of the transmission chain in the first place.

Children account for about 3-4 per cent of hospital admission, in both India and the rest of the world, Paul said, adding special attention should be on those between the age of 10 and 12 years as they are very mobile.
