...Any idea about Non-RTO scooters?..

in tier-2 places (and even some tier-1 places) some of the end-users of customised kits.. whom I got to interact with.. seemed reasonably satisfied on the "cost:value in use" pay-off.

When asked about the issues with traffic cops, most of them (end users) looked at me as though I had arrived from Jupiter (planet).

Conventional, old, fossil fuel vehicles are regularly being retrofitted with battery powered alternatives.

Obviously the old 'road worthy' certification and the licence plate becomes void/ invalid.. if SUCH major modifications are made.

So technically they are no long RTO approved or road-legal.

But going by the condescending looks I got from the users, when asked about issues like fines, I am assuming that Raam-rajya is really here.

anything goes

...OLA Gig I think ..

just 10-11 days back.. saw a happish looking young person in a rush to find directions, while riding a.. rather decent looking electric two wheeler.
(I said 'looked' decent. No idea about the handling, ride comfort, safety.)

The gist of the small interaction:
he is a full-time gig-economy worker. His gross income per day is around ₹1200-₹1250, on an average.
He rents the two-wheeler on a per day basis (similar to how the 8 seater tuk-tuk, normal rickshaw, taxi drivers too do).

Net-net, after slogging for over 10-12 hours.. he still (on an average) keeps ₹650-₹750 or more.

So, it seems, those ₹80-85000 two-wheelers are not a total write-off either.

Also, once came across some user (who had borrowed her relative's vehicle) who claimed that the battery was not the lithium ion ones, thus although the range on a small battery might not be much.. it was a conventional (vehicular) battery.. that lasted reasonably good, with much lesser replacement costs than the lithium ones.
(Since it looked like a custom retrofit, I could not contain myself to ask about the original licence plate that was still there on the vehicle. But she gave a blank look and said 'woh sab nahin pata, koi nahin rokta'.. i dunno about all that. No traffic cops ever pull-over for such things.)
