Just now my brother received a call from a unknown number and name was ria in truecaller and she was claiming to be from sbi and she said are you using sbi prime card my brother said yes and then she went on and on and confirmed brothers D.O.B and work place details then she said we will upgrade your card to simply save and your limit will be increased by 80 % and my brother agreed
then she said we are sending a code to your phone to confirm your application and at this point my brother was suspicious he came to me and told me the whole story and he showed me the code he received it was a gmail verification code which is used for 2step or password reset so i told him to cut the call as it was a scam at this point the girl called again she has the audacity to call again and then i took over the phone and showed her the place she belongs to . My question is did they try to reset the password or they already knew the password and were trying to bypass the 2step only ??

They don’t know the password, were just looking for a way to bypass. Still, for peace of mind, you can change the password, and of any other service which uses the same, probably overkill, though.

The actual process to apply for an SBI Credit Card is very similar, they send you a code for verification, you sharing the code with the SBI rep is considered as your consent for them to check your CIBIL score.

True, even I had applied recently for Simply Save CC through a telebanker and had to share the OTP for cibil check. Got the approved card.

Thanks for sharing the experience about the scam @Dealcharmer
Found it helpful. Karma given to you.

Regarding your query, it seems like they did not know the password but since they had a lot of personal information about your brother especially the email addresses (both current and recovery email), they were trying to reset the password for the current account to get hold of it.

The first step in the password reset process in Gmail is to send a verification code to the recovery email account set in the Security options of the current email account. They used that abundant personal information data of your brother to make him believe that they are genuine callers from the bank. That way the victim trusts the scammer and falls prey to their actions. A classic example of a cyber threat.

Are you saying this?

1)The scammer knows all the card details such as number, expiry and cvv.
2)The scammer is trying get the access to email which is linked to SBICC.
3)The scammer will do online transaction and use the OTP received in that email.

But my question is, how is the scammer going to get the access to the gmail which is linked to SBICC?
