Hi All Shutterbugs out there, I need help!

So, I have used Nikon D3400, a very basic entry level DSLR for more than 2 years now, and like any other shutterbug, I want to go to next level, “Enthusiastic” and upgrade my tools.

I am very confused with all the gears around and on top of that, Different brads, mirror-less, DSLR, all buzz around.
I need all experienced peoples input to upgrade my self.

Here is what I have zeroed till now :
Budget : around 75K
Photo shots : Family events, travel, street, landscape. (Not commercial purpose)
Type : DSLR or Mirror less, anything is fine.
Brand : Nikon preferred as I have already used it, but Ok with any other brand.
my pick till now : Nikon D7500 or Canon 80D

Please help me!

You need a better lens alongside a better camera to get better output
Based on your usage, even your D3400 is more than enough (with a better lens)

What is your priority?
What are the issues u faced with D3400 or the features u felt lacking these 2 years?
What lenses you used with your D3400?
Which mode you use more often? Auto/Manual Mode

I never preferred Nikon because of the wide range of lens (EF/EF-S) canon has. Also the mounts to attach canon lens to other cameras (Sigma MC11/Metabones/Viltrox/Commlite)
& Canon 80D is outdated, they also announced 90D (with 4K recording may be – need to check)

@getready I used D3400 with 18-55 and 70-300 DX VR lenses.
There are few things which forced me to upgrade. Like D3400 is having only 11 FP, so I struggled sometimes to frame my image properly. Also I rarely used my cam for videos but D3400 only supports HD and not 4K. Low light processing was also not that great.
I mostly used P mode.

So do you suggest me for Canon / 90D?

Stick with Nikon for now otherwise your lenses can’t be reused. D7500 is a very capable camera, you can go for it. However, before upgrading, I would suggest you to move out of “P” mode. Try with “M” and once you’re comfortable, think of upgrade. Also try to get a prime lens like 50mm F/1.8, you’ll be amazed by the bokeh.

I was using Canon 550D since past 8 years and this month upgraded to full frame 6D as I wanted better manual controls, high ISO performance and obviously full frame.

Yes, I am upgrading my self from P to M mode. So wanted to upgrade my gears also. So I am going with Nikon D7500.

Frankly keep your existing camera and buy good lenses especially a 50mm prime . Buy a 2019 Samsung flagship phone with quad camera and dij osmo mobile 3 (rs.11500) and you are sorted.

I have multiple dslr camera bodies and different lenses but for vacation or travel or bike rides I never carried a DSLR.

Reasons

  • it simply weighs too much
  • Cumbersome to carry
  • Safety of equipment always worrying. Even car is not safe. 1 stone and camera bag is gone.
  • many places dslr are not allowed.
  • at weddings I take photos by mobile but my equipment comes out only if I am getting paid for the event.

I agree with most of your points. I too use my mobile devices for casual photography. But when I am on Family vacations, specially any new destination, I choose to travel with DSLR. I too face the problems you mentioned, but I always want to satisfy my photography urge on such situations.
Also as I mentioned in my first post, I used my beginner level DSLR for 2 years and now want to upgrade my gears for some semi professional or enthusiastic level.
I am 80% convinced with Nikon D7500. Also 50MM is definitely In my wish list. Will add to my bag soon!

Thanks for the inputs though!!!
