Spectacle Lens Buying Guide

These are important points to remember.

Useful Features
Potentially Gimmicks

Lenses with higher refractive indices

Light weight glasses make the difference noticeable.

Blue Cut Lenses

Blue cut lenses have no scientifically proven benefits.

Anti Glare Coating

They usually give this greenish looking coating.

Benefit is that it ensures the lens passes all the lightt o the eyes and hence reducing the glare. Glare can strain the eyes. It requires more care as dirt is easily visible.

It wont protect your eyes if a moron decides to put high beam on your eyes. It is an usual misinformation propagated by marketing agents.

Progressive lenses For Single Vison

Progressive lenses for single vision prescription (unless done for myopia management of a kid) is a big gimmick. Wait for turning to 40

UV protection coating

UV is considered as a risk factor for cataract as well as macular degeneration.

UV400 is the best  protection available. Cheap ones give UV420 protection. 400 means 400nm, it blocks any light with wavelength lower than 400nm. Same goes with 420nm.

Anti Scratch Coating

Risk of getting scratches is reduced. Good.

Progressive Lens For multiple prescriptions and managing myopia of children

They combine multiple lens prescriptions into a single lens. You don't need a pair of bulky bifocal lens/ separate pairs of reading glasses and distant glasses.

Okay that's it. I will update more as I will dig deeper in to the matter.

Need suggestion. If my mom has -4.5 & +2 number. What will you suggest Bifocal or Progressive ?
Tech Guru Tech Guru
Link Copied

I don't have the necessary qualifications n experience to point out the exact solution. In my limited understanding progressive pairs allow different prescription powers to be in a single lens. Consult your local opthalmologist, optometrist n optician for better info regarding the same. 🙂

ElectroMagnetic Waves  are around us. Apparently everyone emits them including you and me (infrared) and intergalactic bodies like Sun, stars and planets. Now how to identify them scientifically? Scientists identify them with either frequencies or wavelengths. We, humans, are able to perceive a portion of them i.e. 380nm~780nm. And essentially the term light was associated with em, visible light spectrum, in the first. As scientists n their researches progressed we came to know of modern things we came to know of these things. Do you remember about α (+ve) rays, β (-ve) rays and γ (non-ionising) rays? Well origin of those terminologies happened from here Alpher–Bethe–Gamow paper. Why are we talking about them then? Well Ultraviolet rays(10-400nm) are present in our sun rays. Ozone layer in Stratosphere is responsible to filter it out. But because of thinning of that layers and other factors, some will call it a modern day hoax, some portion of UV rays comes to earth's surface. As the frequency increases and wavelength decreases, the energy present in that EMW increases. UV ray is further characterized into further sub-types. We are concerned with UV A (400~315nm) (Associated with skin aging) and UV B(315~280nm) (skin burning). These are the only non-ionising cancer causing spectrum that reach us from sun. Rest of the non ionizing high energy EMW get absorbed by our atmosphere. I am writing so much things but I know a few will read these things and I have gotten bored. I will jump directly to the topic.

When we have eyesight issues because of our natural lens issues, we are prescribed to wear glasses. Let's just take an example of a generic prescription.

https://cdn0.desidime.com/attachments/photos/801579/medium/Prescription.jpg?1662284824

Source:How to Read Your Eyeglass Prescription

OD n OS: OD stands for the Latin phrase Oculus Dextrus i.e. your right eye. And OS stands for Oculus Sinister i.e. your middle eye 🐒 just kidding your left eye.

Sph/Spheical: If the sign is +ve then it's for Far-Sightedness(Hypermetropia)(we have issues with near sight but have generally clear vision for distant object) and if the sign is -ve then it's for Near-Sightedness(Myopia)(We can see near but have problems with distant objects).

Cyl/Cyllinder: Remember the vision charts, which we see in an Optometrist's/Opthalmologist's office?

https://cdn0.desidime.com/attachments/photos/801586/medium/Opto.jpg?1662285944

Source: What Is the Snellen Eye Chart?

They usually ask about the last line. They ask for the blurriness of that last line. And they put some more lenses and ask if it made it clear. It is because of  Astigmatism. It is there because of unusual curvature of either lens or cornea.

Axis: It denotes the position of the astigmatism in the eyes.

Prism: It is to correct non aligning eyes What Is Prism Correction in Eyeglasses?

Add: It is for bifocal prescription.

PD: Distance between pupils.

How to choose a frame?

Choose a hypoallergenic material. And check for a suitable frame as per your budget and liking.

Essential parts of a frame is given bellow

https://cdn0.desidime.com/attachments/photos/801593/medium/Parts-of-eyeglasses.jpg?1662286968

Source: What are the parts of glasses called?

https://cdn0.desidime.com/attachments/photos/801594/medium/sizechart.jpg?1662287077

Source: Measurements For a Frame

Please go through the above links given under the images to find detailed explanations. 🙂

Now we come to the topic of frame size selection.

https://cdn0.desidime.com/attachments/photos/801597/medium/3-768x488.jpg?1662287699

Source: Frame/Sunglass Size Guide

Basically you follow the above link. 🐒 You take a bank plastic card. Put the longer side of the card along the nose. And check yourself in the mirror. Follow the image given above to know your size or go to your nearest optician for the same. And before buying a frame check if it can support your power lenses. And most preferably get either acetate or tr90 matterials.

Now we come to the lens part . Actually I will take a lil break before writing anything else. Alright.

Refractive index: Higher the number is thinner n lighter will be the lens.

Blue Cut vs Blue Filter

Basically Blue Block blocks the blue rays and Blue filter partially blocks the blue rays.

Check this video for the real truth. Why do you need it? See, you need it in the night to protect yours sleep cycle. Some other people with light sensitivity might take benefit from it. Contact your doctors for better advice.

Anti-Glare vs Polarized Lenses:

Polarized Lenses are specialized lenses suitable for outdoor use only. It blocks unnecessary reflections off shiny objects and water bodies.

Anti-glare lenses allows maximum amount of light pass through your lens. Actually your lens can reflect some lights. But anti glare coating ensures you to get glare free vision. Differentiate this glare from the glare we were avoiding in polarized lenses. If we look at some shiny object in the sun wearing both polarized n anti-glare lenses one after other then we will notice that anti-glare lens did not do any job. Understand the difference. Polarized lens are used in sunglasses. And anti-glare ones are used on spects. 🙂 Ex: Crizal

UV Protection 420 vs 400 nm:

As discussed in the first paragraph our visual spectrum ranges from 380~780nm. Ultraviolet rays' spectrum ranges from 10~400nm. 420nm lenses block rays with wavelengths lesser than or equal to 420nm and 400 nm lenses block rays with wavelengths lesser than or equal to 400nm. Don't mistake this with Blue lenses. This UV protection is essential whereas that blue thing is a gimmick for the most. 🙂🙂🙂

Anti-Scratch Coating:

It keeps your spects scratch free for a while. Scratch proof and scratch resistant are not the same things. 🙂

Progressive Lens:

Multiple powers are combined in one lens. It is also used to control myopia in kids.

Photochromic/Transitions Lenses

They automatically transforms to sunglasses in outdoor/change in light environment. 🙂Well, exactly not sun glasses but you get my point.

Where to buy a pair of glasses?

Lenskart, EyeMyEye, Titan Eye Plus provide good quality glasses.

Couple of things to remember while buying from Lenskart

  • This step is important if you wear high power glasses. Check if the frame supports higher power lenses or not. There is an option called Supported Powers. Please check your size as well.
  • Notice one thing, Lenskart is selling blue cut lenses. Remember the difference between blue cut vs blue filter.
  • If you want to shell some more cash they are selling Tokai Lutina, which costs 8k for lenses only.
  • If you don't wish to take buy one get one thing then you can get a single pair of glasses by availing 25% off coupon.
  • Downside is lack of lens varieties. Basically you are forced to buy blue cut lenses.
  • Best thing is that you can go to their respective stores to get yourself your own pair.
Titan Eye Plus:

It is a bit on premium side. I visited their stores. As per them, their current promotion is if the value of the spects is above 6k then you will get 500 rupees discount and if you spend above 8k then you ll get 10% off and you can pay via giftcards. You will get wide range of lens options. And options are better than that of lenskart.

https://cdn0.desidime.com/attachments/photos/801691/medium/image.png?1662301062

I asked them for a suitable single vision lens. They have sent me this quote. They also have premium lens like Carl Zeiss ones as well. They give insurance option as well if you take both lens and frame from them.

My take is to take look at your local optician's store. You will get tons of options. Don't fall for those blue cut lenses.

Couple of moderately pricier yet budget friendly lens brands from local optician stores.

Essilor

The French MNC company is basically the East Indian Company in eye-wear world. 🐒

Essilor's parent organization is Essilor-Luxotica. 🐒

Enough of the moral talks. Let's talk business. Here are couple of brands you should be aware of.

GKB

  • Vision Rx Lab Well it is a joint venture between GKB and Essilor . 🐒🐒 The brands are very famous from it has Essilor quality. I will give an example its Bluemax's highest index i.e. 1.74 can cost you the same as that of Crizal Rock 1.6 index wala lens.
  • Nova Lenses Again it can give Essilor quality at a very cheap price.

I don't know much about your Zeiss Lenses. I am researching on that topic. Shed some lights on the same. I am ignoring premium brands like Rodenstock. 🙂🙂🙂 And honestly I don't have much info on em.

Above videos will help you to identify counterfeit Zeiss n Crizal lenses.

Tips:

  • Use wet microfiber cloth to clean lenses.
  • Don't use paper towels to cleans lenses.
  • Blue protect does not mean UV proof.
  • Anti Glare is not same as polarized glasses.
  • Local stores can give easily 20% discount on Crizal etc. Give your local stores a chance.

I hope this so called lengthy to write yet too short to be called a proper article helps you.

🙂🙂🙂🙂

Btw people say photochromic lens damages you eye ?

How true is this @bikidas2060

Benevolent Benevolent
Link Copied

Technically yes, if it's not UV protected. Any tinted/photochromic glasses or goggles which just reduce the glare of visible light, harm the eyes indirectly due the invisible UV radiation. The eyes adjust naturally to the level of visible light recieved. If the light is reduced artificially by glasses, then the eyes aperture increases, which may lead to reception of higher amount of UV radiation which is not filtered by these glasses unless they are UV protected

whts the difference between blue cut and blue filter lenses?
Tech Guru Tech Guru

Blue cut will entirely block a portion of blue light. White ll look yellowish. Blue filter allows a portion of blue light to pass. White ll not look that yellowish as that in blue cut lenses.

For night use blue cut is good

Life update:

I went for an assembled paired of specs. I took the 350 rupees Lenskart acetate frame, courtesy of TRYUS coupon.

I went to a local optician. I had option of Zeiss, Essilor, Nova and Prime. I zeroed on Zeiss and Essilor. Everyone was singing about Crizal. I researched about crizal a bit. Well, Essilor Luxotica owns Crizal, Nova, Prime, Vison Rx lab etc lenses. And everyone is talking about Essilor because Essilor Luxotica is a big mafia. So, I chose Zeiss. I had two options either Drivesafe or Clearview Duravision Platinum. I chose the later. Actually I had paid for the Sapphire Hr by Essilor, then I changed my mind for Drivesafe. Then the shopkeeper said take the higher version. And I had to take Clearview Platinum UV ones. Store might offer 15/20% discount.

Tomorrow going for single vision Reading glass with power +1.

Kindly suggest. Most important, it should not break easily. Can lense be bit flexible.

If I get bifocal. In my case upper part with zero power and lower part with +1 . I have to move my eyes to look through required part of lens. This is uncomfortable for beginners. Progressive is Right option with higher price. Doctor suggested to buy single power. That is when I read or use mobile, I Will have to wear glass or else remove it. That wearing and removing all the time.

New to this, time to buy my first specs.

@bikidas2060 Biki Bhai, help me in choosing the right specs. The doctor suggested blue protection because of my screen time and ARC coating for a late evening drive. But you have mentioned that blue protection is a gimmick. Is it?

Any idea how are these Blu Thin Lenskart glasses? They claim to have ARC + blue protection.

And like you said, blue protection glass will give a yellowish tint in all normal stuff, that includes even nature? So if one goes for the blue cut, is it recommended to have another normal glass where we can see the actual thing without a filter?

And yeah suggest a durable frame as well.

Tech Guru Tech Guru

If your doc has prescribed you a blue filter glass because of your screentime then I will suggest you to see another doctor. 🙂

Lenskart higher end glasses are all blue block glasses. They totally block light having wavelength below 420nm. Don't buy em.

  • Visit Lenskart physical store for a frame. Check the size e.g. 53-16-140
  • Visit Lenskart e-store to buy a discounted frame of that size. You ll get a decent pair at 345/ 0 power.
  • You have multiple options 1) Crizal Lenses 2) Nova Lenses 3) Prime Lenses 4) Clara Lenses 5) Zeiss Lenses

Crizal By Essilor (Nova, VRX Labs are also owned by Luxotica-Essilor and GKB Opticals)

  • All glasses have blue filter technology. Crizal is a coating.
  • Best Blue blocking glasses of Crizal brand list are Prevencia ones.

Essilor Elements

  • Cheapest blue bloc ones from house of Essilor.

Nova Bluemax Range (Vision RX Labs)

  • They are the whitest ones among blue filter glasses I have seen.
  • Sasta sundar tikau with Essilor's blessings. 🙂🙂🙂

Prime

  • Another Sasta Sundar n Tikau brand. Very good quality with blessings from GKB and Essilor.

Zeiss

  • Not so Sasta Sundar but very Tikau.
  • You will have option to select Blueguard lenses (Way better than Essilor ones).
  • Duravision Platinum coating is a very tough coating. I am personally using it so, I am vouching for it. I love my pair of glasses very much.

And like you said, blue protection glass will give a yellowish tint in all normal stuff, that includes even nature?

Answer: Yes 😒

So if one goes for the blue cut, is it recommended to have another normal glass where we can see the actual thing without a filter?

Answer: Most people wont have em. But if you choose to have em then it's great. Your perception of color wont be altered. Sun rays have the most blue light. A Laptop screen is not going to be able to compete with it.

My tips:

  • Use the night mode feature.
  • Follow 20-20-20. That is for every 20 mins passes by, look at a stationary object 20 feet away for 2 seconds. And please blink more.
  • Have some Screen Off days in a couple of months.
  • If you want to have glasses then have a pair of Computer Glasses. In India they are selling Normal Blue bloc glasses as Computer Glasses which is not true.
  • If you want to have a pair of Glasses then I will normally suggest you to have one from Zeiss.
  • If you have budget restraints then go with Prime/Clara/Nova.
  • If you are set on blue bloc glasses then go with Essilor Elements.
  • If you want to have blue filter glasses then go with your cheap Nova Bluemax range. Sasta Sundar Majbhoot.
  • If you are a very outdoor person n handle your glasses like crazy🐒 then maybe take Crizal Rock ones. They say they are very strong. I would have recommended Zeiss but Crizal Rocks comes at a cheaper price.

Discounts to expect n Important Points:

  • Don't order from Lenskart app. Goto a local optician, in case you still choose Lenskart  then choose Lenskart offline store. They will measure PD manually.
  • Essilor Lenses are offered at 20% discount as it is the normal discount. Zeiss offers less margin so, don't expect more that 15% discount. Don't ask for heavy discounts. They might cheat you. A lower index glass costs 1k lesser.
  • Titan Eye Plus ll shove their brand lens. If you are spending that much money then just blindly take the Zeiss ones.
