i was wondering why various toll free calls are not connecting from my Airtel number but easily from Jio number.

today i came to know there are two category of toll free numbers

1. starting with 1800

these are free completely.

2. category is premium numbers used by various financial institution for phone banking / support

starting with 1860

Jio is not charging anything for dialing these numbers.

while airtel is charging 1 to 2rs per minute depending upon number.

these calls are usually long and you can end up paying a lot of money on Airtel.

kindly confirm other operator users.

e.g. ICICI credit card helpline 1860 120 7777

THIS IS ONE MORE REASON TO STAY AWAY FROM CHORTEL OR AVOID.

ALL CALLS MADE VIA 4G VOLTE MUST BE FREE.

MESSAGE ISSUED IN PUBLIC INTEREST.

1860 were never toll free numbers. They are chargeable at local rates. Only Jio is offering free calls to 1860.

This has been the case from very long time. All network providers except JIO charge for 1860 numbers. And if you may have observed, almost everyone has moved from 1800 to 1860. In case of 1800, the organisation has to bare the charges, but in case of 1860 it is passed on to individual customer. JIO operates calls over VOLTE (data), it doesn’t really matter much to them, every call is treated the same way.

Coming to ICICI, there is a method you can get away without these charges. You can initiate a customer call through imobile app, that will eventually lead you to call a mobile number which works with the usual unlimited plans.

That was something new. You should have complained to them for charging you for toll free numbers.

all operators are now either on volte or claiming to be volte ready.

Another similar case is SMS charges for Short codes (premium numbers like 567676). Other than jio all operators charge for this. Vodafone 3Rs, bsnl 1.5Rs, Airtel 3Rs

I won’t pay neither IUC nor for these calls. I contact those companies with 1860 numbers via email and ask them to call back at my preferred time. stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye

I don’t use credit card.
You work in bank I guess.
Does your bank don’t charge it’s customers sometimes unnecessarily. Have you ever asked your employer?
Like some banks charges for ATM transaction, some for NEFT. For loans  too much processing fees, for loan prepayment penalty.
Every other company in this world make some money by implementing  these kind of unnecessary charges.
Even government IRCTC charges convenience fees inspite they do earn revenue from ads.

You cannot directly call on that number. You need to initiate the call via app. It looks like they are reserving a token for user to be able to call that number.

Yes we see VOLTE ready, but I dont think they are operating like JIO does, that is calls over VOIP.

I’m not sure of that, you can check with icici if it is allowed for credit card users. I hold savings account.

The real chor is the one who is misleading people. The IUC was to go away from 1st Jan. That means Jio was willing to bear the cost until then. If they were ethical, they should have started charging 6p/min from 1st Jan if it did not go away.

unethical includes

unwanted activation of paid services like caller tunes , English courses.

charging for sms services which are advertised free. special numbers.

minimum monthly recharge requirement.

I appreciate what jio has done in telecom services… But jio is degrading day by day and airtel is improving.
Whatever 100rs extra airtel is charging now but they are providing great 4g speeds.
This may not be true at all places
