Go by flight and then hire a taxi. Drivers and hotels will give you out of the world ratesz just negotiate with them. Don't go outside alone late at night and if you need any help then look for our army and not the local authorities.
Paaji flights are amounting to 40k for round trip so if by road or by train is convenient enough then would prefer to go by them.
Never been there bro. Voted up for visibility, so that you get more advice

Yet to visit , so can't suggest anything now
first of all, better to take flight both ways for more comfartable trip (sept price from/to delhi-srinagar are around 4.5-5k only)
if you want to travel via train then you can go upto jammu via train, from there take taxi or bus. taxi's easily available in jammu/srinagar, you can either take private one or shared one. (i say if your destinations are around srinagar then better take flight) by road jammu to srinagar may take 8-10 hrs of hilly roads and if there is any road issue then it may take more time.
i suggest first go by flight and return by train if you want to travel around both srinagar and jammu, this way in initial days you will not be exhausted by long road journeys.
take postpaid sim in jammu, easily available. jio postpaid and airtel postpaid both works well, ask locals before buying.
In J&K tourism is the major source of their income, so at many places like dal lake, etc you will find prices are like 10x-20x of normal prices. so get a idea of actual prices of things or activities before blindly paying them.
"The rate for the Shikara ride in Dal Lake has been fixed at Rs 700 per hour for three kilometres with Rs 400 for every extra hour. The same rate will apply for the Shikara ride in Nigeen Lake. The rate per day (six hours) for Dal Lake and Nigeen Lake has been fixed at Rs 2700.The rate for the Shikara ride in Dal Lake has been fixed at Rs 700 per hour for three kilometres with Rs 400 for every extra hour. above is the fixed price but when you visit there they will ask you much much more than this so better bargain with them. this is the case at many places.

Bro too many open points-
try to elaborate a bit.
For the travel I'd advice to take flight until Srinagar even if it's slightly expensive as by road the journey is long and tiresome and also not very pleasant if you're not used to travel in the mountains. The stretch of road from Udhampur until Banihal/Qazikund is quite exhausting.
Rest depends on how many days you have to explore Kashmir and your budget likewise.
Rough itinerary can be-
Day 1 - Arrive in Srinagar. Local sightseeing and visiting Mughal Gardens like Shalimar Bagh, Nishat Garden, Pari Mahal, Badamwari, Boulevard Road Main Dal Lake, Shikara Ride, Hazratbal Dargah and Shikara Ride till Char Chinar, visiting Market Place Lal Chowk and The Bund.
Day 2 - Can be kept for exploring Srinagar from the things stated above.
Day 3 & 4 - Drive to Pahalgam and spend a night there. From Pahalgam you can further go and visit Betaab Valley, Aru Valley, Chandanwari, horse ride till Mini Switzerland
Day 5 - You can drive to Gulmarg and spend a night there with family. Take the Gondola to the top of Afarwat Mountain. Two levels and can go as per your budget and liking.
Day 6 - Can drive to Sonmarg. Will be some travel from Gulmarg. Can be skipped based of your liking.
Day 7 - Back in Srinagar and some shopping from local market based on your choice. Same day return flight or you can fly back next day.
1.If shortage of time see only dal lake in Srinagar and avoid ye wo gardens etc.
May be Gandola in gulmarg is available only by booking

Go via train to jammu and then flight jammu to srinagar...
Usually in Sept there is very less rain but still it can be risky as u are traveling with family.
Jammu to srinagar flight usually comes around 1.8k to 2.5k
Bhai Do purchase dryfruits from there .
Mamra badam , Akhrot , kesar , khawa tea , elaichi etc and also quote the prices here
