Vaccinations will be widened to everyone above 18 in the next stage beginning May 1, the government announced today after Prime Minister Narendra Modi held a series of meetings today.
All adults will be vaccinated in “a liberalised and accelerated Phase 3 strategy of COVID-19 vaccination”, the government said in a statement on a day India reported a new record high of 2.73 lakh cases in a day.

So far, the government had allowed vaccinations only for frontline workers and those above 45.

Step is good, but where is so much vaccines? If Govt try to include Sputnik V then also supplies not coming at least till September & that also by way of import & still price not decided by Govt for Sputnik, all & all if we count only covishied & covaxin then 7 crore p/m & 50 lakh p/m capacity with full capacity & need 2-3 months to ramp up, & covishied production will stop in month if us not remove ban on key components.

Thank you very much for throwing some light on these *strategy front. The way I see it, 50% is there for centre and 50% is for state/ private brings the total value to 50% only. (But, people won’t see policy deficit/ politics here)

Furthermore, the adult population is ~70% of the total which is again adding chaos among distribution of vaccines to the person in need. Making everyone eligible (approx 1:1000) brings down the sharing ratio further between people with comorbidities and others. (No strategy for the same) relieved

Also, making it available so early in private (for less than 30%) and that too such a huge percentage of total production does not make sarkar ji responsible for the spike in death graph.. pray  @Sudarshan61

Yes, we people are only responsible for not wearing masks and not maintaining social distance!

The centre has given 100 per cent advance to two of India’s Covid vaccine manufacturers till July, senior sources in the Finance Ministry told NDTV on Monday night.
The advance – calculated as ₹ 3,000 crore for the Serum Institute (which produces Covishield) and ₹ 1,500 crore for Bharat Biotech (which produces Covaxin) will ensure the two manufacturers get the funding necessary to continue, and scale up, production of vaccines, the sources said.

Bharat Biotech to boost Covaxin output to 700 million (70 crore) doses per year

Bharat Biotech on Tuesday said it has scaled up its COVID-19 vaccine Covaxin manufacturing capacity to 700 million doses per annum

Capacity expansion in vaccines manufacturing is a long and tedious process, requiring investments and several years, the release said.

“Bharat Biotech is able to expandCovaxin manufacturing capacity in a short timeline, mainly due to the availability of new specially designed BSL-3 facilities, first of its kind for manufacturing in India that have been repurposed and preexisting expertise and know how to manufacture, test and release highly purified inactivated viral vaccines,” the firm said.

Manufacturing partnerships are being explored with our partners in other countries, who have prior expertise with commercial scale manufacture of inactivated viral vaccines under biosafety containment, Bharat Biotech said.
To further increase capacities, Bharat Biotech has partnered with Indian Immunologicals (IIL) to manufacture the drug substance for Covaxin.

The technology transfer process is well underway and IIL has the capabilities and expertise to manufacture inactivated viral vaccines at commercial scale and under biosafety containment.

Bharat Biotech uses a proprietary adjuvant Algel- IMDG, which has now proven to be a safe and effective adjuvant, especially to stimulate memory T cell responses.

The synthesis and manufacture of the IMDG component has been successfully indigenized and will be manufactured at commercial scale within the country.

This is the first instance where a novel adjuvant has been commercialised in India
