TRAI to regulate Hotstar, Amazon Prime, Netflix and other OTT platforms in India

TRAI is set to consider bringing OTT media platforms under regulations similar to those implemented in the DTH and Cable TV industry. The move could make OTT platforms follow similar rules and strategies as DTH and cable operators.

Very nice
Now for the benefit of users… Amazon prime video, hotstar, Netflix, zee5 all will increase their plan prices (If this idea becomes a reality)
Again for the benefit of users, you can select a cheaper Netflix or prime video plan based on movie language, genre ( Hindi only, English , Horror, Thriller… ) Just like individual channel pricing

Hotstar, Prime, netflix etc are damaging the prospects of Jio TV. So the boss has ordered that they must be cut to size.

Idiots at TRAI are at it again.
Those DTH regulations worked out pretty well huh ? xD
You would think they would have learned their lesson from their last mess.
But why learn when you can double down on stupidity instead.
At least that seems to be a general trend these days xD

Why would they learn their lesson? I don’t understand. They increased the DTH tariff in the name of decreasing it and consumers simply have to pay the higher price for less channels, and consumers have only two options, either pay the increased price or disconnect DTH altogether. Well the latter isn’t really feasible especially if you have old people in house.

So their plan has worked out perfectly. So why would they bother to take lesson from it!

Do people working in TRAI don’t even have common sense and bother to ask public opinion. Earlier they mentioned Indians will only going to pay what they watch on DTH, seriously it’s a good move by the government for the DTH provides, but not for Consumers – I used to pay cable guy just 120rs, was able to watch almost all channels that suffices our need , now I’m paying 250rs DTH just for regional channels, that too for 28 days NOT even for a month.

HIGHER ups don’t see and feel the prospects of LIG people. What they think is that those who want to get entertainment, pay hefty bucks else sleep under your good and get your own. All we can do is posting our opinions on forums.

I remember AT&T.. Remember this company? Very very good service… They are old but still provided immediate and polite service. They were pretty mellow because they had to watch what they do or say.. I mean it was a hobby to call them and make the girls cry.. And they could not hang up on you.. If you could not make a connection they stayed with you until you could. I remember how I could not call home but they spent like an hour routing to different countries and operators and in the end actually even talking to my parents and then connecting me..

But someone decided this company was too big and too successful.. Some rich arabs wanted to invest in another company called MCI and they were not getting anywhere after spending so much money and lobbying etc etc etc.. So they split AT&T into like 6 different companies..

Try getting anything done now.. Charges for anything are through the roof.. When I wanted more phone lines installed they wanted mm to dig a trench from the road side under the side walk into the house.. They would not do it even if I paid.. And they charged for everything else and they decide what deposits you pay, and if they dont like you, they block your accounts for reasons only they know. CC People were rude and obnoxious. It took days to get something fixed while before it took a few hours. Imagine not having a working phone. Which means no contacts and no customers and you use a phone for everything. From talking to others, all the separate companies behaved this way because even though they are split up, they are still bigger than anyone else and there still are no options.

All this because Sprint and MCI bribed politicians and judges into helping them get market share. Which did not work because no one likes losing their jobs or money.. The smaller companies now came back hard and found they can not only step over other companies but also the customers.. And now these smaller companies decide they can make even more money by regulating internet and data.. When they say something like Net Neutrality, it dont mean you have equal access.. It means you have access only if you pay for it.

but it is internet content.
how then will it enforce if transmission from outside and local permission needed by them

same as DTH means? now no strong language shows or comedy would play before 11pm?
and in subtitles they replace xx in fxxk, maderxxxx, motherfxxxxx or add audio beep?
but what if subscriber watching Indian content when traveling outside, then which clip they will play for their customers? censored one or regular one?
confusing and enforcement failure for sure.

I doubt if TRAI has the authority, they might make suggestions but it’s the MIB (Rathore) that takes the decision
There’s no CBFC for films streamed online, 1952 cinematography act doesn’t apply. So they have to pass a new act if they plan on censoring TV shows n Films online

US has something like TV parental guidelines (Based on 1996 Telecommunications Act) that the Show rating and a warning (adult content/violence) needs to be shown before the start of the show. All Streaming services like Netflix, PrimeVideo follow this. I think ratings system with a warning is more than enough than passing a regulatory that online TV shows n movies should be in content with what’s being shown on Cable TV /DTH

Ffs enough with this shite. Give me 1 GB data at 250 per month again. Take 4G away, I don’t use it much anyway. Give me back the Pre-Jio era. I don’t care to save 200/300 rupees per month behind mobile bills, when three times of that is silently going away through the door.

In olden times, in typical village places, where houses were made by clay, thieves would dig a hole outside the house and move through that hole while keep digging it and end up in middle of your house/room. Half the time people didn’t even realise while they were being robbed, only to realise at a later stage that they were but until then it was too late.

The same is happening in past 3-4 years. And the way I see it a fresh 5-year contract is almost here. Brace yourselves fellas. You’re in for a show.

Can the government please stay the f*ck away? I don’t want these streaming services to follow the diktats of the government. If they are regulated, Censorship is inevitable. Please someone just tell the government to buzz off!
