Long Review -
Fair warning that the movie has a lot of hospitalization and surgery shots. No blood as such but I still need to put it out there as hospitals tend to make some people depressed.
The movie is shot entirely in a town (Hemet) in California mostly because it is based on the true story of an Indian immigrant in US. No, the story has nothing to do with immigration. It is about his cancer diagnosis, the endless surgeries (and some dark humour jokes around them) and his relationship with his growing up daughter.
Speaking of the daughter, the child artiste who played the younger version as well as Ahilya Bamroo who plays the teenage version are just outstanding. That is some excellent casting done there. Dare I say they even outshine Abhishek Bachchan in the movie. The father-daughter scenes are the best in the movie.
Bachchan Jr. lands an ace with his body language of a guy gutted by surgeries whose body is unable to keep pace with his mind. The prosthetics towards the end are also pretty well done on him. Reminded me a bit of Bachchan Sr. in Paa (which I haven't watched).
Abhishek's interactions with his nurse Nancy and his lead doctor, Dr. Deb, and handyman (played by Johnny Lever) make the rest of the movie. All in all, it was a satisfying and even inspiring watch.
Note that just like The Buckingham Murders, there is a lot of spoken English in the movie considering its setting and use of local characters.
