My PC configuration
i3 8100 + 16gb(2 sticks 2400mhz) SSD evo 860 and other components

One of my friend is selling me i5 9400 +Mobo
8gb single stick ram at 15k

My Plan is to replace this kit with my kit, and then selling my kit i.e i3 8100 Mobo(one single stick from friend) for 8-10k, thus for like 5k – 7k my system will be upgraded to i5 9th gen.

Is it feasible option? Experts opinion pls

Is it i5 9400(with integrated graphics, out of stock everywhere for an year or so now) or i5 9400f(no integrated graphics so graphics card is must)? You will not be able to sell i3 8100+mobo(assuming it is the usual budget model H310/low end B360) for more than 7-8k & it is also pointless if you don’t need the 2 extra cores of i5 9400.Just see your current usage & if your processor usage in task manager rarely cross 40-50% continuously for an hour or so then most likely you don’t need the upgrade.

Hi, what’s the exact reason for upgrading? For entry level lite gaming i3 8100 with GTX 1060 is still enough. If you are planning for moderate and above gaming then you can consider upgradation.

Apart from this I would first suggest you to find a buyer for your rig before thinking of buying your friend’s rig. The reason I am saying this is cause it will help you determine whether the money you will need to add from your pocket (selling your rig – buying price of your friend’s rig) is worth the upgradation.

Thanks for you concern, well I don’t game at all I need it for editing purpose, no 4k though…casual photoshop and some moderate premiere video edits…had some freezing while rendering videos and that’s the reason I thought of an upgrade

i5 9400 + mobo + 8gb stick (used) not worth 15k IMO
[ Mobo 4k, 8GB RAM 2k, i5 9400 – 9k? ]
i3 8100 vs i5 9400, performance improvement will be hardly 20-30%

Sometime back, i got i5 9400 from US for a mere 9k (NEW) and performance is almost close (a bit better) in comparison with Ryzen 5 1600 which is being sold for 7k even here (w/o iGPU). You can get any of the recent ryzen CPUs when they’re on sale (unless you’re too much into virtualization/AVDs)
Our lootera dealers (India)..hardly offer discount even after paying just 18% (in comparison with 45%+ w/o import license)

Best thing u can do is..list out your needs first and decide accordingly
For me, i felt disappointed with Ryzen 5 and ended up getting Thread ripper 1950x
About RAM, 8GB DDR4 is more than enough for majority stuff…have had a 8GB DDR4 single stick (Default 2400mhz) OCed to 3000mhz for almost 3 years until i moved on to 32GB DDR4 (2x 16GB Default 3600mhz)
Even with 50 chrome tabs opened in the background, RAM usage barely crosses 20% (when i work..it reaches 70%+ though)
GPU (If u require one) – Get a used 1060 6GB for like 8-10k (Don’t go for the lesser VRAM versions like 3GB 1060gb if u are into gaming)
SSD – The one u have is more than enough for basic needs/gaming

Great input bro, Same thought came in my mind….

My detailed config
i3 8100
8+8, 16gb 2400mhz ram
240gb 860 evo SSD
H310M E Mobo
1050ti 4gb OC GPU
1tb blue WD
CX450 Corsair PSU
Carbide 100r case

How can I alter this config to its best by adding 20k more ?? Wanna get rid of processor, mobo. This thing handles pretty moderate editing but stutters now and then

@getready i5 9400/i3 9100 availability is less & they are selling at ridiculous prices so not worth suggesting(16800 for i5 9400 vs 11400 for i5 9400f). Also as far as I know all electronic pc parts officially imported attracts much more than 18% duty even if not 45%.

Your usage must be not typical for getting TR1950x over ryzen 5 because outside of gaming ryzen 1st/2nd gen was more than enough for any typical user & ryzen 3xxx series is even enough for gamers. sunglasses

It is ~18%, there is no much more*
For Gaming @ 1080p even Ryzen 5 1600 is more than enough (CPU intensive games)..have tried many popular titles when i had it 1.5yrs back
Ryzen 5 1600 does a decent job even for 4K Video Editing too (Vegas Pro / Premiere pro) For Graphically intensive games & if you wanna use Davinci Resolve u may need a better GPU than 1060 (May be 1660/2060 for gaming and 1080/2070/2080 for Davinci resolve) but Gaming is not my interest
