VPN Trick

So recently I seen a few VPN threads on the DD. Some are about discounts and some are about people asking for a good VPN. A while ago I found a nice trick to unblock the websites without using a proper “VPN”.

So I thought about sharing it with DD Community. And I don’t know if this trick is already known or in use but anyways I would like to share it.

Procedure :

1) Download a DNS Changer app. I use an app called Intra. 1.1.1.1./Cloudfare will also work. If you know some other app, it may also work. Just install the app and turn on. It will create a local VPN to send DNS queries to your chosed DNS.

2) Now simply open the site you want to access but check URL for HTTPS instead of HTTP.

Many sites have a both versions. Good sites mostly use HTTPS. Some sites may have both but HTTPS may not work properly but I haven’t found more than one or two websites in this category since I have been using the trick.

Instead of typing manually HTTPS url, you can google search the site name and google will provide the HTTPS link automatically. Like instead of typing, https://www.desidi...om search desidime on google and site link will be HTTPS one.

3) Site will open without any further issues. Enjoy!

How does it work :

To understand why this method works we have to know how internet and censorship works. Basically when you enter the site url or tap on the link, request goes to your ISP server who then uses, most of the time, his own DNS server to resolve it and then sends back to your PC/Phone and website opens.

To block a website, there are basically 2 ways : either blacklist the site in their DNS Server or using HTTP header method. HTTP data is unencrypted data so anybody having access to your network can see what websites you are visiting and so can your ISP. So if they want to block a certain website, they can do so easily just by blocking the HTTP request.

So by using the trick, we have both changed the DNS server to a public server that isn’t controlled by the ISP and by using HTTPS (S stands for secure) your HTTP request is encrypted and ISP cannot see it and therefore cannot block the access to the website. And therefore website opens.

Disadvantages :

Now this method can be used to access ISP restricted websites only. You cannot bypass geo-restrictions like access US Netflix or sites not available in your country as your IP address is still visible to the website you are accessing.

Second disadvantage is few sites might be slow due to their own servers/coding. No fault of the trick here.

Third disadvantage is using a Proper VPN is more secure as it hides your IP address as well.

Advantages :

Using a Proper VPN creates an overhead/slows the internet speed (as all the data is encrypted on your device) and also more power and battery intensive. Using the trick doesn’t create any such nuisance.
Second, Good VPN are often paid and costly too acc to Indian currency, Free VPN have limitations like limited servers/data capping or speed capping or if not, then not good for security and riddled with ads.

Few file sharing websites only allows few no. Of downloads per IP address and then ypu have to wait 20 min to hours for second download. By using the trick you can bypass this. Just switch on and off airplane mode and you will get a new IP address and go on to download your next file.

Using this method, You can block system wide ads – in chrome/ other apps (not video streaming apps though) by using Adguard DNS server. Just google Adguard DNS server hostname or pm me. I don’t know if posting address here is allowed or not.

DNS Changer apps :

I personally use Intra app. Good app, nice UI and easy to use. Sometimes acts buggy if internet is not working properly but othertimes, perfect.

You can use 1.1.1.1./Cloudflare app. Good app but with all the animations and Warp promotions I don’t use it. And You cannot change your DNS to any other public DNS server other than 1.1.1.1

At the time when I found the trick, I tried Private DNS Changer app. It have quite downloads on play store. But it didn’t worked. I checked through a website that if it even changes DNS server or not, to my surprise it didn’t. My DNS sever was still ISP one/Jio. I haven’t checked it after that but if you are using it you can give it a try.

There is a option in Android verisions > 9.0/P
Called Private DNS Server in settings. It doesn’t work as it using TLS for DNS queries instead of HTTPS DNS queries like Intra/1.1.1.1. So don’t use it

All these apps are available on Play store. Just install the app and turn on. It will create a local VPN to send DNS queries to your chosed DNS. As it creates a VPN, you cannot use another VPN without closing this first. But after using any other VPN for whatever reason, you can turn on these apps again manually.

Trick Block :

So, next quesion you may ask is if this trick can be blocked by ISPs. Short answer is yes but it will require a new method of Censorship. One currently available it SNI – Server Name Inspection but it is mostly used in China and South Korea at the moment. IIT Delhi has reported Jio using this method for few sites, but currently trick is working fine and I believe will be working fine for quite sometime.

So I think that’s it. If I remember any other point, I will add. Peace ✌.
