Absolutely, I have done same , they aked me for old sim card (non working) and noted the sim number and issued postpaid sim.  Later converted to prepaid after 90 days.

Go to Airtel store and ask for the same number. If available they can give you the same number in postpaid with atleast 399 or 499 plan.

why not in prepaid? and after closing, they issue it immediately?

First confirm whether it 8s still in your name or is removed.

Even Airtel does not remove (reduce) subscriber count, in many circles, despite bo recharge since 14-15 months too.

Calling that number, do you get 'switched off' voice or 'temporarily disconnected'.

Else reconfirm with 18001031111 customer care.

Unlike Idea and all, Airtel no longer gives the 'non fancy' number search options on their site.

But any sensible retailer can help search the number from their app and get it back, IF THE NUMBER WAS OF AIRTEL from THE START.

And in that case, it can easily even be issued in prepaid.

But first reconfirm if it is really no longer in your name.
Mostly you are just panicking and number hasn't been taken off your name.

(I spoke to my known retailer and he said it can be reissued, if available.
But he kept asking me if it was previously posted in into Airtel.
As per him, if it was originally an Airtel series number from day one, then he said he can have it re-issued/ sold).

I think you have 15 days more after disconnection to reactivate it.  Go to store, and try getting it

How to Reactivate your Deactivated Airtel Number

  1. Try to request re-activation via email to [email protected] or customer care.
  2. Visit nearest airtel store and submit reactivation request.
  3. Provide Address and Photo Id proofs.
  4. You may receive a confirmation call and then your number will be re-activated.

Does anyone know what happens to a disconnected mobile number that was ported out to another circle?

Say an old number 9999-123456 that was initially issued in Hutch(now VI) Delhi, post MNP implementation, it was ported out to Airtel TN and then abandoned after sometime.

So, this number goes back to the VI Delhi pool (original circle for the 9999 series) or stays in the Airtel TN pool?

Can a disconnected mobile number be claimed from any part of the country?

Even though even basic customer care staff can realise if the customer was previously on their network, the concept of portability works as a permanent transfer.

It is the same for insurance or other industries too.

Can local POA/contact number requirement be bypassed?

I am not sure I understood your query, sorry.

But if you meant that in a city of non residency, if one can bypass these to get a new connection.

Well legally, all operators are to follow numerous KYC norms, even since the various terror attacks which happened back then.

But in practicality, from what I have seen with retailers (non company people)
the 'verification' (alternative) number on which they call
can literally be your own spare number.

As for PoA I think that in the post UID/Aadhar era, even a simple letter from the local host or other such things suffice.
Because the photo ID proof is anyway of the customer.

Because I do know for a fact that visiting international tourists (some may even have Indian passports) too get SIMs on their own name, so I am half guessing this about (local) PoA being not that necessary.

Today I visited a retailer who checked the number for details but no details were found he asked me to visit Airtel Store for restoration.

I will try that tomorrow as I am not sure on whose id I had used to get that number as ot is almost 12 years old. My father is out of station may be I may have used his id.

You can take duplicate sim by going to Airtel store. I tried.

Surprisingly (for me it is surprising), he and many others claim to not know or really do not know
as to whose name the connection is in.

So before doing what you say, one needs to get an idea of ownership first.

@jandro.jenga

Thanks. Well, then it seems getting a disconnected mobile number as an outstation customer won't be that difficult, or at least, not as difficult I thought it would be. Now, only if the AT Delhi circle retailers were able to issue that AT TN circle number, then the things would have been really easy.😊
