What scam has become so normalized that people don't even notice it?

I have listed few examples

1. Tolls

A. Contractors: They have found have ways to keep the toll collection a constant phenomenon.

B. NHAI : collected in national highways by NHAI  [eg. Pune-Mumbai Expressway : this toll will never end for next 100 years]. Many times the union minister in parliament have agreed that tolls will not end on highways where people can afford to pay. Money collected at these placed by NHAI can be used in places by where per-capita income is less.

2. Food Delivery add on charges - this list is very long [few examples : handling fee, safety fee, rain fee, etc]

3. Privacy of data - data sharing scams, promotonal advertisement(online, phone, sms, etc)

4. Tele Marketing Calls

5. High time for Refund from online portal : this takes 7-10 days. Today we live in a UPI-digital era.

6. School fees : cities school fees range from 50k to 3-4lakh / per-year

@Mayur_Pune this way everything is a scam.

  1. Asking higher salary when I change a job even when my skills are same
  2. Not paying my house help what he/she initially asked for
  3. haggling for discount with street vendors

I too dont like paying high prices with the current inflation but I cant term everything as a scam.

Most of the your examples ain't even scams.

  • Tolls : Toll tax is legal and collected to maintain the highways. it's different point for discussion if the collection is consumed under the corruption.
  • Food Delivery add on charges : Food delivery add on charges are to facilitate the supply chain. At the end of the day, they have to pay for the resources and operations.
  • Dentist charges : It depends on state-to-state bases. some have regulated the prices, some haven't. off-course there is a huge profit margin in the medical field, but you can't label it as scam for it. Government will regulate it if WE citizens will pressure them.
  • Privacy of data : Data sharing is not illegal's on practical world in absence of any data protection bill. hopefully it wouldn't be the case in upcoming years.
  •  School fees : Same case as medical industry. its been regulated in my state. Though I will agree on it; most schools fees are not worth it even after regulations.

I disagree with you....In all above cases promises are made then are broken...

We face traffic jams , broken /underconstruction roads for years.. kept as it is.

They promise free delivery so we think of buying subscriptions but then they impose this addon fees or increase the min order to get free delivery....

Financial companies should be ethical but they are engaging in malpractice by selling or sharing data with third parties. Some time employees have access to data they shouldn't be having in which term they just get the data and share it with companies for quick buck...

Companies data gets easily stolen and is available online for couple of hundred rs and sometime even free...they broken promise of secure systems.

School Makes promise of giving world ckass education , blah blah blah and then they come back many times to buy this and that and sometime the teacher they highered is not even competent enough to teach the kids and teachers are getting payed less then the minimum wages set by government  resulting in appointment of only those teachers who comply with them to say on paper they are getting minimum wages or they are relatives of funding members

So scam it is.

Am I the only one here to think that we, as a community, are very loosely (& candidly) using the term "scam" on DD?

@ OP:
1 - its business/revenue optimization for NHAI & source of black money for contractors. NOT SCAM.

6 - you can term it exploitation but NOT SCAM. They are clearly stating the fees upfront. There will always be better schools with lesser fees - you have to hunt them out. Just because you want a particular school (for whatever reasons - proximity or brand or else) & they are charging exorbitantly, it doesn't classify as a SCAM !!

Price has been increased for every item.

So asking high salary is not bad.

House help should be paid according to what decided.

Bargaining with street vendors should be limited.

Asking 40 rupees item at 20 is not good.

But asking at 30 is good.

A scam is when someone takes money from you without your permission/without delivering the promise.

All the things you listed deliver exactly what they promise. If someone doesn't like them, they can simply skip them.

The biggest scam is salaried class paying 30%+ tax on their income and business class virtually getting away without paying anything.

I am not against paying a higher tax rate for the development of the nation, but everyone should pay their fair share.

Many highways are built on Public-Private Partnership (PPP) and Build Operate Transfer (BOT) models..

In this, the private parties do the construction on their cost and they are allowed to collect tolls on it for a certain period, instead of the payment of construction.

After a few years, it is transferred back to Government.

what OP mentioned as scams all are private related. if demand is high then charges also high. If the crowd is too much for anything, it has to be paid for.

Microsoft Windows removing features, advertising it as an "upgrade" AND forcing it at some point on all PCs by obsoleting older hardware and device drivers. I feel Windows is a big scam although up to Windows 7 it was ok (Windows 8, 8,1, Windows 11 in particular are big scams for removing a huge truckload of features).

People have normalized it. They accept the "free upgrade" and deal with the bad pointless changes somehow as Windows is a monopoly.
