Which type of Printer can be selected for occasional use?

Please provide valuable suggestions regarding which type of printer can be selected for occasional use for Black & White 30 to 50 pages print monthly.

Whether should go for ink tank, ink jet, laser? All in one printer or single function? Kindly consider following points also:

# Cost of print per page
# Cost of Replacement supplies and Refilling.
# Other maintenance cost if any.

Searched previous posts regarding it but not found any post having proper info. General opinion from google search is to go with ink tank which is costing 10 to 20 paisa per print and it can refilled easily with ink bottle.

Brand and Model suggestions are also preferred.

Your choice is between Ink Tank and Laser. If you are going to take prints at least once ever week, you should go for an all in on Ink Tank. It will give you the facility of color prints and scans, whenever necessary. You can go for the Wi-fi ones, they are very convenient for printing/scanning directly from mobile phones. You can go for the Laser printers, if you will be taking prints with long intervals, and need faster prints, and are sure you wont need color or scans. Print costs should be similar for both.

In my area, black and white print is Rs 2 per page. For just 50 pages, I wouldn't buy a printer

Don’t make him a scapegoat.
He said OCCASIONAL uses.
You’re suggesting him to buy a laser printer ? Seriously?

@GrabDeal Yes. Because the toner in Laser printer does not dry up and can be used without any problem for even upto 3 years. The inkjet ink dry up or leak out even without use and he will end up either paying for inks he never used or left without ink when he really needs it. The ink may even damage the printer. His total cost of operation will be much higher in case of inkjet printers. Occasional users should not even think of inkjet printers.

I just bought an Epson L3110 last month because the Brother DCP T700W which I was using since 2015 was left unrepairable because of a cockroach attack.

Brother printers are the best in terms of features, output quality and build quality. But they don’t sell well , because in India Jo Diktha Hai Wohi Biktha hai .

I too own DCP-T300 from almost 5 to 6 years or so.

Quite satisfied with its performance but there are few issues,

Brother don’t have proper customer care and service centres like HP & Canon

Major issue is buying Genuine Brother Ink Bottles as there is lot of counterfeit bottles are sold both online & offline.

My DCP T300 is out of warranty and few days back it has suddenly stopped working in the middle of the printing process and started giving Print Unable 50.

Couldn’t contact Brother CC for help & support and couldn’t find any reliable Service Centre in my city. Talked with a guy in one Authorised Service Centre but he was asking for ₹500 just for inspection only, even though printer doesn’t get repaired. I have to left printer at his premises and after checking for its exact issue he can either repair it or return it. He was also not sure that if any part was needed then it will have to ordered from company and it will be available or not? So in any of these scenario Minimum Cost of ₹500 has to be compulsorily born. I don’t mind it paying either if he delivers perfectly working printer, but just for inspecting the printer, I think this is too much, because then someone else will also demand the same way.

Due to COVID-19 infection I am not planning to physically visit many printer repairing shops.

YT troubleshooting videos are also of no help.

Can’t print, scan or copy.

Don’t have budget for buying a new printer anytime soon.

I am happy with performance of Brother Printer but service, parts etc. is pathetic.

Brother and Epson ae under dogs of Printer Market, but they lack aggressive marketing and reliable service like competition brands. Ricoh was another such under dog in Laser Printer but it has wound up its business in India.

Once upon a time, Ricoh SP 111 and Ricoh SP 210su were major hits and were selling like hot cakes on SnapDeal.

After a lot of research, I settle in for Canon Prixma G3010. I was looking for a All In One printer with mobile direct and WiFi connectivity option. This is a Ink Tank printer and comes with an additional Black ink botlle. Usage = Occasional

Always choose laser ones.

I assume you need only black and white prints. Get a laser printer if printing only black and whites.
Initial cost is almost 50%-60% more than an Inkjet printer but it’ll payoff it’s higher cost in printing and toner cost not to mention the speed. Maintenance costs are also less in laser printer (no dry ink).

I have an HP all in one at home. It is WiFi enabled and with the HP app, I can print directly from the phone; no need to connect to the router.

Firstly thanking the creator of this thread and also for one and all who have contributed. I have followed this thread thoroughly and bought an epson L3150 wifi printer and that ends my search for a printer on a high and satisfactory note. Was initially looking for a laser since the print speeds are high and duplex option in the brother but the color print and scan along with wifi made me strech my budget for another 4k. Also another thing I chose inktank is for the cost of the printing and easy availability of the ink bottles offline and online. I was more happy when the technician from epson said that he knew people who have used L3150 for as high as 1lakh copies, the only caveat is the need for regular printing. Just one to two prints a day will do or in the worst case atleast once a week. First, was worried about this regular print what if I am outstation or unable to print for some time. I got to know from the technician that we can just do a simple print head clean! Great buy!

i bought this (https://www.flipkart.com/hp-deskjet-1212-single...) during the sale for rs.1199. So far, I took around 200 pages of colour and 500+ pages of b/w. Works till now with refilling the same cartridge.

I understand that inkject cartridges are a scam:

But if requirement is cheap print (price/page), not all-in-one or wifi, mostly b/w.
Can’t we buy inkjet and get the ink cartridge refilled locally(at cheap cost instead of buying new cartridges, something like done here:
).
Please help here if I am missing something.

HELP / ADVICE NEEDED – Looking for my first ever printer

My requirement is cheap prints (price/page), USB – not wifi, all black and white prints.

I understand the key is to refill with compatible inks, not the company provided inks as they are costly. So which brand & model combo can get me the cheapest printer (on price per page basis)? Bonus if it can scan or do xerox too, but both are really not needed.

Please provide links to the products, thank you.

Get Ink Tank from any of the reputed company
Print Cost per page will be around 10ps or less.

Other features depends on budget.

Very informative thread.
I need printer for occasional use, prefer color printer.
(1) How long Ink Tub can be left idle? If I do not print 3-4 month, what will happen? Only tub to be refilled or more damage/expenses?
(2) What is cost of new/refilling Ink tubs – black and color both?
(3) B&W laser looks best for occasional, but color laser at 30k out of my budget. Any color laser in less than 20k?

In past, I had one all in one from HP, its cartridge got dried up so all money wasted, never bought new cartridge being expensive, so that printer is garbage now.

Get Ink Tank only. No point going for a color laser at triple price.

Ink Tanks are very cheap to print. And you can just keep taking prints every now and then to keep it running. Wont suggest leaving printers for months, just take any print out just for the sake of it, once in a while.

Thanks @mas143forever , can you please also help with my first 2 queries? Actually I am not particular on printing cost as very few prints needed occasionally. Only problem is that I may not be able to take print frequently, so trying to understand re-start/maintenance costs of Ink Tank printer if not used for 1 month, 2 month, 3 month. No point buying something having maintenance cost associated if not used regularly

1. One cannot say exactly after how much time it can be left idle. But yes, since its not laser, leaving it idle for long can lead to clogging of print heads.

So, if you can just take random prints every now and then, that will be alright and go ahead with the ink tank. But if you are sure that will be leaving it for months every now and then (going out of city or anything like that every now and then), then I guess you safest option is laser only. This is something you have to see.

2. Price would be different for different brands. Dont worry about it though. Its much much cheaper as compared to cartridge based inkjets. Similar to laserjet for per page cost.
