OS Drive © is HDD?
If Yes.. then get an SSD
Also .. check the ram usage whenever there is noticeable lag (Via Task Manager)

So it is always good to upgrade storage thing if this is only issue of slow laptop ✌️✌️

What if I upgrade the RAM i.e make 4+2 to 4+4GB RAM ?? That will cost me round Rs 1500 for a 4GB RAM

So.. one drive – two partitions
5400RPM drives are strictly only for storing media. If you have got a 7200RPM drive then install OS on it and check the performance (I use it for installing games*)
And the best option would be getting an SSD and install just OS n important apps in it and use 750GB drive for media storage

Swap out the 2GB module for a 8GB one. All set for next 3-4 years at least as far as web browsing is concerned. My 2018 laptop came with 8GB installed. In Windows 10 browsing in Chrome was a tad limiting as I keep a fair few tabs open and I hate to see tabs reload. Upgraded to 20GB(max. possible) at the first possible opportunity.
But upgrading to an SSD takes first priority. Even a QLC one would be a massive upgrade compared to a HDD.

10 yr old, so you have to replace HDD with SSD. Get a crucial 480GB SSD 3500-3700 approx in sales and it will give a new life to your Laptop!

Please don’t put up with spinning rust any longer. DRAM and NAND prices are expected to start rising again soon. Boom-and-bust cycle…

Like everybody suggested, move to SSD. You will see visible difference.
2nd, check task manager and try to find which process is using most of the CPU / RAM.
Check what services are running at start-up, if you find any unnecessary services, disable that.
Chrome also sometime cause very high load. There are many things to check.

Its not only chrome, even windows explorer or anything shows lag. Can SSD fit inside the laptop same port/place where current HDD is placed? I do not want to put external drive, should be inside. One of my friend has same config laptop but with 500GB 2.5inch Serial ATA hard drive, his laptop works smooth. Is SATA also cheaper option instead of SSD?

So far what I make out from all replies, order of preference should be:
(1) replace hdd with ssd
(2) upgrade RAM

I can invest ~5k for upgrade. Usage is normal email/browsing, word/ppt doc. No games playing needed

Thanks @_Munna_michael_ Few more questions before I order Samsung SSD: I am assuming this is internal, not external one. Any way to confirm before placing order that this SDD is compatible with my laptop? Would it be placed in same socket where my current HDD is, can I do it at home via screw driver or it require experts?

And what is this cloning from hdd to ssd? I have licensed Windows OS, have prepared a installation pendrive, can use the same pendrive to install on SSD and Win OS license is mapped to firmware and authenticated online, so I am ok to do fresh install. Mine is Dell Inspiron 15R 5521 (5.6") laptop

@worldindia2000@

Buy ssd and encloser which i share above these are best…

Now follow these steps you can do yourself-
Step 1) – download samsung official cloning app https://www.samsung.com/semiconductor/minisite/...
Step 2) – put your ssd in enclosure and open cloning app and follow simple steps to clone your hdd to ssd, this is very simple
Ps. Cloning means your whole laptop apps ,data, windows etc. Will be copied to your ssd with this app.. see some YouTube video for more guide..
Step 3) – after cloning successful , just see here in your owner manual https://cutt.ly/k...op from 19 to 25th page … just remove some screw and replace ssd ..

Voila , you are done…

And now place your old laptop hdd in enclosure and format it after sometime and use as external storage and your laptop with ssd now works as fast as bullet train 🥳🥳

Tumhara laptop mai bahut easy hai replace karna kyuki alag se block diya hua hai hdd ka so bas kuch screw kholna padega page 19 to 25 dekhlo …
And ya SATA 2.5" lagega sahi hai size 2.5" lelo ssd

Thanks bro @_Munna_michael_ you are simply great. Now I am confident to place order. Is it advisible to order from unknown seller like CORSECA, any chance of getting fake/used product, or I try exploring local market?
Is this 500gb ssd better upgrade or I can also go for 250gb ssd + 4gb ddr3 ram (so total ram 8gb)?

SSDs depending on the interface can be SATA or PCI-E(AHCI in the early days/NVMe). HDDs have used the SATA interface for nearly 2 decades. SATA is limited to 6Gbps whereas NVMe is an order of magnitude faster and accordingly more expensive. Plus they aren’t compatible with older systems.
There’s a significant uplift in speeds in going from a 250 to 500GB SSD as per benchmarks but not too noticeable in mundane stuff. Both Samsung and Crucial are very good options.
Windows 10 being a modern OS was designed keeping SSDs in mind. Naturally it doesn’t work well with HDDs.
You could go for a 250GB SATA SSD and 8GB RAM. About 6.5k at face value. Although the RAM upgrade would be tied to a soon-to-be outdated 3rd gen. platform unlike the SSD so…
With an SSD the Windows page file could be useful. So check how it goes after upgrading to an SSD first.

Alrights thanks dear @_Munna_michael_ I will order this samsung ssd. Not going with case for time being, as cloning not needed, already have OS installer in pendrive ready (formatted laptop last month), so instead of clone, I will go for fresh/clean install. Data is already on google drive

Leave the RAM. 6GB is enough. Just get an SSD by spending 2-3K instead of 1500 on RAM.
If you have an extra slot for SSD, you can take 120/240 GB SSD. If no extra slot, but still need good storage, can instead get 500 SSD. Your laptop will fly with the SSD.
RAM upgrade – lappy will remain a sloth.
SSD upgrade – laptop will run like a rabbit.
SSD+RAM – turn into a cheetah.

Most cost effective – ssd upgrade only.
Best update – ssd + ram.
Useless expense – New RAM but same old hard disk.

I would also suggest a clean install, and then just copy and install only the stuff that is essential. To keep the system clean.
And if you are going to use the HDD as secondary storage device, then you might as well get a crucial 250gb ssd + another 8gb RAM. Both will cost approx 5.5k, instead of just getting 500gb ssd for 5k alone.
