I have heard that buying non-original mobile chargers damage the phone? How to buy a mobile charger – what factors should I keep in mind?

Well only thing is to make sure it is 5V and 2A or so.. or 1A is fine as well..

As long as it stays in that range it should be fine. 10 years ago it would make a difference but not now..

Problem with local stuff is quality control.. That 5V can be 8V then it wont be fine as it will burn out your phone..

Just buy form amazon or flipkart etc.. Make sure the reviews say they are good.. Those cheap Chinese ones are worse.. They try tricks and thats iffy here.. It works but maybe not work so good in rain.. If line voltage spikes so does their outputs etc..

To see the difference, open up a samsung or sony charger and count the number of components.. Should be around 50.. Now open up a cheap Chinese one.. Number of components is like 10.. The 40 missing components are used for safety and to prevent fires etc..

Well my experience with these local chargers is that it won’t harm the mobile but they themselves stop working in less than a month either the adapter or most of the times the cable. So if you want to spend on another one too soon you can go with one.
You may not need to buy only the original manufacture one, but just go with the same specs one of either reputed/good ratings one from Flipkart or amazon with some warranty.
Just always make sure to use the mobile charger with a socket adapter with fuse. Even my original xiaomi one got burnt because of surge.

Let me give some more perspective here
Chargers typically involve stepping down the voltage down to 5V or 9V from 220V. Earlier days, the design is based on transformers which provide intrinsic isolation from high voltage, but right from initial Motorola, chargers are based on SMPS technology where they use little different technology to achieve the same output. Although there is isolation by another means here, in the name of reducing cost, they will exclude the “isolation” part and hence there will be some leakage current on the Ground path which comes all the way till the phone connector. This leakage current is not good for human safety reasons. Also because of this, the phones (touch part) may behave erratic while they are being charged with local chargers. Apart from this, the voltage regulation may not be stable due to sub-stranded components or jugad they do in the design to reduce cost.

The above information is not meant to scare the existing users, but to increase awareness.

Get a good charger , not necessarily the branded ones of Samsung sony or likes who charge a bomb.
There are many available in the market For Rs. 60 to Rs.100.

It can because local charges are not good in quality and the material used can melt or catch on fire. Your device can too if it is attached. Also, local charges are not guaranteed to work on certain power range and most probably don’t have any fail safe. So charging IC in your phone can get damaged. That’s what happened to one of my phone 5-6 years ago.

If you are using local charger in case of emergency only then it’s fine.

Instead buy a charger from good companies like boat, mivi, mi etc. They have good charges and in cheaper range too.
