I am thinking to buy dell XPS laptop worth nearly 83K. My credit card limit is 45K. If I add additional 38K to my card, will I be charged for over limit spending?

Don’t know about Hdfc.

Have done this with HDFC, ICICI many times didn’t get charged but recently I have heard instances where SBI charged overlimit fees for this. Better to wait for others confirmation as well smile

No… I had made a purchase which was billed but I had not paid since the due date was on last day of the month. Didn’t realize it and made another big purchase during diwali at first payment was decline but approved on second attempt. Next day I was charged 500+tax… sad

Then yours is a genuine case and charges are as expected.
I never did this over limit thing where txn amount>card original limit
Only Amex is very clear about this(No charge)

In my amazon icici credit card… My limit is 50k. And added extra 6k to credit card.. Tried buying laptop worth 56k.. transaction is getting declined… Not accepting to purchase…

So added 6k to amazon wallet from cc and paid remaining amount 50k using credit card…

Since my credit limit is 50k… Unable to purchase higher amount in single payment.

For Ur Issued Card… Pls Confirm With Customer Care Before Making Purchase 83k In Single Attempt.

Best is to get it confirmed from your credit card issuing bank’s customer care.

Write to your card provider and get a written authorization. The transaction won’t likely go through, its way beyond your limit.
No harm in getting a written authorization and trying. Keep in mind you won’t get any reward points for the amount beyond your credit limit.

Can’t say about this new rule but last year oct sale I have used my sbi card by adding money in advance to do a transaction well over my card limit & there were no issues.

@prabhatk26 was this charge for spending over your card limit by adding money in advance?

Forget about getting anything meaningful from sbi card customer care at least, best you will get is a copy paste of entire T&C of the card & worst they will not even be able to understand what exactly is the query.

You are right. Every credit card customer care executive are either dumb or they deliberately don’t want to listen customer queries. Recently I had to mail 3 times to a ICICI regarding rewards points related issue. The first reply I received was totally irrelevant. They don’t even read the mail & reply like bots copy-paste.

I think this will not work because most probably transaction decline due to lower limit.
Some Credit card allow only small amount like 1-2k above limit even after advance payment.

Alternatively: Add 38k amazon gift card and rest you can pay using hdfc

For sbi, users here have confirmed in the past(incl myself) that adding money in advance can be used to make a transaction much larger than card limit(I added 30k to my 14k limit card to make a 28k transaction in last year bbd sale in oct). ICICI also does similar I think based on some comments here. Not sure how this works now after new rules/changes.

I am late to reply on this.. also you may have already gotten the answer as I did not go through all the responses..

If you want to spend 83K on a card of 45K limit, first add the difference onto the card.. only after the add reflects on your card, you may use it to spend 83K
