Will India impose 35% GST?

Last 2 days seeing this 35%GST news and already India has the highest GST % - 28% among 140 countries and now on cigarettes/aerated drinks they are planning to introduce 35% GST and the decision to be taken on 21-Dec

Some might say it is good so that folks will start to reduce smoking but in reality it is always on the rise only and the government will earn more, infact in India more than 98% of cigarettes are manufactured by only 4 companies

Already ACs/home appliances have 28% GST and now they are implementing the same for clothes and dresses above 10k 😌

Readymade garments costing up to ₹1,500 would attract 5% GST, those between ₹1,500 and ₹10,000 would attract 18%. Garments costing above ₹10,000 would attract 28% tax

Shoes costing above Rs 15,000 per pair: Increase GST from 18% to 28%.

Wristwatches above Rs 25,000: Increase GST from 18% to 28%.

I dont see a problem with high GST on luxury products that  <0.001% of the population would be affected by. Those ultra wealthy will grudgingly pay it or some wont even care.

I'm ambivalent about cigarettes, it is a cash cow for all governments. They would never ban tobacco if they really cared about public health because most tobacco barons are the politicians. What is the GST on alcohol products these days?

But the government HAS to reduce GST on everyday essentials and the educational sector.

It's a travesty that they are charging 18% GST for online courses when all someone wants to do is gain an education to contribute to the economy down the road. Such a myopic decision.

Once they create 35% GST slab then they will keep on adding product/service one by one slowly.

First of all, gst on tobacoo is fine. Gst on beverages doesn't makes any sense as they are not forcing companies to decrease sugar content.

Gst on clothes above 5k at 18%, upto 1500 @ 5%, 10k+ @ 28% and 1500-5k @ 12% makes sense.

Cloths above 1500 @ 18% is insane.

I know that they propose absurd number. They will reduce it when implementation is done.

People will feel good that tax is not that high as proposed earlier.

They will launch some freebie scheme and give away. They will launch mega infra projects, use half of funds and divert the rest in their pockets.

We should not be mad. We chose him. We knew what was going to happen.

People are ready to pay so why wouldn't they tax. They are getting votes anyway, just look at Haryana and Maharashtra.

exactly.. if they are charging 0 GST for education/hospital - medicines (health related) and food (normal hotels and not the 5 stars) then it makes sense to have the highest  (still 28% on ACs/ TVs above 32inch etc are way too much) GST on these luxurious products but again they shouldn't exceed not even 20% (my take) as in return you don't get the returns from the government like how you get in other countries - e.g. based on my personal experience, after every year of personal income tax payment in UK you get a notice of all the details on how the government has used your income and if you have issues (genuine) you can claim it back, the basic amenities like roads/water/transport are addressed without any issues even during the worst winters there

that's the worry for me as for e.g. now TVs under 32inch is 18% and above is 28% and if they are successful with this 35% GST then they will tweak the existing 28% ones and try to push to 35% like TVs under 32inch - 18%, TVs 32-50inches - 28% and anything above will be 35% 😌

"Good and Simple Tax"  -- It is becoming anything but simple. Idea was one or maximum two slabs but we are creating newer slabs. They will start with luxury items but what defines luxury? Even AC they will consider as luxury very soon.

AC is already considered a luxury item, taxed at current highest 28%

All that subsidies and "upliftment" projects/schemes need funding (ploy to win votes from so called "gareeb" people), so GST is an easy way to get all that working...

* Oh, even those "gareeb" people still pay back gst whether they buy a soap bar or an LED bulb... so something still flows back from those scheme money to the govt...

Government is spending taxpayers money on sh*t schemes like ladli behna, ladki behna and all.

They are spending money on so called minority commission.

Spending money on upliftment of so called dalit and shoshit who haven't got water from last 5000 years.

Giving 8 lakh rs to person who put fake SC/ST act .

Spending thousands of crores on pension of so called politicians and leader's.

Spending thousands of crores of salaries of Maulanas.

Spending thousands of crores in promises like free bus, free electricity and other revaedies.

So keep crying and government will not stop looting innocent tax payers .

when credit cards devalued their perks, super coins devalued why not government

So they devalued your salary by increasing GST 😉

While it may seem good , that anyways we don’t buy products that cost more than 7-10k. It actually concerns us the most because whatever we buy online are discounted products and have MRP between 1.5k to 10k which increases gst liability from 5% to 18%.

yes 😌 iron and steel items are at 18% GST and wished all construction items are not more than 5% as already here we are not sure about quality of products and when you have 18 or 28% GST then for sure the manufacturer has no other option rather than to compromise on the quality as they can't simply transfer the GST burden to consumer  by increasing the prices

The govt actually cares for the citizens. To prevent corporate employees from nervous breakdown and stress they are increasing taxes so people lose their motivation to work and can ask their employers to f*ck off.

Nd they still are winning in many states, either most of the indians including my dimer friends are educated fools or most likely this government has rigged the voting mechanism (iykuk)

This tax is modern organized loooot.

.. Be it like Developed country, they confront the leaders and even embrass them in different ways and here our PM is so coward who doesn't even do a single independent press conference, can never even face an random intellectual citizen of the country.

Yes..... We are doomed..
