would tread with caution now. @limbo
as such, now i hardly want to be an ‘early adopter’ on most things tech.
and am not ashamed to learn from others’ experience/s.
(read: extensively scanning the net for such hurdles, issues as you mentioned.. and whether there is any skirting possible).

i can still deal with a naked Win 7 Ultimate (legal OEM upgrade from HP) with just a normal antjvirus, since i never use outside disks and restrict access for flash media (pen drives)

for those even older than i am, i’m in bit of a spot.
though my father has been using Win10 for routine minimal work for a while now.
only surprises were when limited internet packs suddenly depleted.
i think those auto updates were fixed by someone on his two laptops.

What would be the primary purpose of the system? If Web browsing or watching videos Lubuntu is the best bet for older systems. Of course DDR2 is now dirt cheap,DDR3 only a little less so. A memory upgrade would go really far. The biggest advantage with Puppy Linux is that it runs entirely in a RAM disk. Before I got an SSD I used Puppy Linux to gauge how much faster it could be relative to a HDD. Chrome with a dozen tabs open (plus a handful of extensions ) would launch instantly whereas in Windows running of off a HDD it would take several seconds. Still is faster than an SSD.
Edit: Just set your internet connection as Metered. This will take care of unexpected updates.

the moment you install 10 it will make it die faster due to excess heating.

hmmm.. did fiddle around with an acquaintance’s Technet/MSDN builds with no surprise background uodates.
Using Insider builds might be legally fine, don’t know about MSDN ones though.

by the way, you just gave me a déjà vu moment🙂
for i was just responding to a friend who asked something about David’s video.
this video

hardware compatibility can be an issue .
most of the machines relevant to me though are dual core G630/G640 and above.
I don’t think officially MS would want anything with old RAM or less than 4GB RAM to use Windows 10.

what are you going to do?
(Win10 UI is just not consistent and sturdy, in comparison to Win7. Not to mention the advanced skills needed to disable most of the silent processes.)

Any way to make Windows 10 look, feel and act like Windows 7?😔

thanks for that “metered” setting tip.
reading now, i faintly recollect that i overheard a similar conversation.
My Maa’s machine, if she ever does use it, would be just for the basic stuff you outlined.
Uncle does use Tally/ MS Office and netbanking et al.

My retired machine.. well i even have Virtualdub and Virtual Machine (Android, XP) on it
and not scared of editing phone call audios or amateur video.. none of it is important though as it’s just leisurely self exploration.

yeah, nostalgia😁 is gooot, isn’t it¿
in my overexcitement, i once ordered a “free” media/disk of Windows XP’s Service Pack.. SP3 i think. Not the entire OS, just the SP3 on CD/DVD.
Only later did the person whose card i used for verification told me that some 13-17 SGD were charged on it😪 as shipping… for i🙈 didn’t tick local location and the parcel was sent from Singapore.🤦‍♂️

and @guest_999 this post of @gabbar_singh made me dig my inboxes.
If anyone ( @Limbo @panchabhut ) wants the ISO or such of the Solaris, i could have those disk folders picked (from a property that is closed and 700km apart at present)

we only bought few Office 365 licences that was billed to the business
and for a relative i once bought a paid Office 2016
Otherwise Office 2010 and a free upgrade to 2013 and 1 year Office 365 were on the house.

Though the Office 2010 and 2013 show under my login, i assume anyone with those serial/key could use the downloaded copy and even get support.
(haven’t tried all that but assumption is from past instances).

had never expected to get the actual Sun Solaris kit, but USPS connected to India Post and all three (typical dimerly mindset🤐) kits to three addresses got delivered by Registered post.

As for the MS-Office 2010 mail: i thought it was spam, and never actually tried downloading till about July third week.
It was sheer joy and shock to actually get free ⋆legal⋆ Office Pro, around the same time as rerail launch.

all this, isn’t to boast.
just reminiscing over that which may never repeat.
If some of you (genuine) folks do ⋆need⋆ it or have some other reason/s to use them, feel free to reach out at ⋆nlnl776633⋆ {{at}} ⋆gmail⋆ {{dot}} ⋆com⋆😉

@nlnl776633 individuals can’t purchase win 7 extended support, only enterprises can(that too big ones, most small ones won’t be able to afford the costs).

Yes sir, that is korrekt.
The third parties whom MS has handed over the baton, deal with the original buyers/licensee of the VLKs (Volume Licensing Keys).
and then too, maybe only of a certain size.
I.. coming from my low morals😔😛, was wondering if there were {{cough}} alternate ways to rig the OS.
Or to keep it clean, simple
If somehow have Compaq, HP, Toshiba help in this regards.

well Win8/8.1 too will see the sunset.
besides they are totally 😒mehh🤮.. so it’ll either have to be Win10 or do nothing.
I do have original licences for Windows Server 2003 or so, which too is fairly okay (if nothing else).
Thanks again for following up and helping out Sir _ /|\ _ 🙏

No antivirus will help you against a system exploit(remember wannacry ransomware which exploited a windows vulnerability in smb protocol forcing microsoft to disable it by default in later versions of win 10).

@nlnl776633 glad to help. No way to get win 7 extended support using “ahem means” as it is similar to the olden days of pirated windows where windows updates used to reveal the genuine or not status of windows. Win 8.1 extended support is till 2023,enough time to make any transitions & believe me win 8.1 in some ways is better than win 7 & older win 10 versions/latest versions without any issues.

The ‘’Metered settings’’ will work only for couple of weeks. After that, it updates without your knowledge.

@guest_999 Where can I download Win10 LTSC 2019 ? Is it free? Can this be used as VM?

@LIMBO
Most of the financial online applications (banking application, paytm, freecharge etc), Govt Apps(Aadhar, Incometax etc) are NOT working properly with Linux browser.
Also, there wont be any regular updated for these Linux browsers.
Also, these browsers are NOT generally tested with the above fin/govt apps.
That would eventually make us to go for Windows based browsers.

In one line, it is waste of time installing linux and trying to use it for day to day work.

i really didn’t know that transitioning could really be that simple.
I was on the verge of exploring options to get Compaq/HP, Toshiba to help me.. to get the Win 7 keys that would get extended support till January 2023.
By myself, in Bharat, i couldn’t figure out a way to directly purchase Extended Support from Microsoft or Digitalriver.

On a side note: i only stopped using Lotus Smartsuite.. back when some course at NIIT had the compulsion to learn MS-Office.
Even then, around the Y2K hype, i was still using Lotus Notes at work (not Outlook/Outlook express)
So it isn’t about being a fanboy.
Just convenience.

some old softwares gave more flexibility than the present ones. I still use Foxpro through Virtual Machine. Most flexible database if you know the programming tools.

I use tally 7 through Wine on Xubuntu. Libreoffice takes care of everything that MS Office can offer and some more. And Linux is always better for browsing.
Before fully switching, I suggest that you set up Xubuntu through Virtualbox or bootable USB drive (persistent mode) and try it for some. If you are comfortable, then do the switch. There are tons of videos on youtube to help you with.
There is also the alternative of Cublinux that is designed to clone a chromebook, with the added facility of full linux functionality.

Yes sir. Thanks.
However as @guest_999 mentioned..and i didn’t go much beyond the video/comment of Christopher / ExplainingComputers (in the main post)
.
It seems that the VLK/OEM buyer brands/companies will have to be looped in.
It seems that these VLK (volume licensing key) licensees (HP/Compaq, Toshiba in my case).. will have to be approached.
and ✯if✯ they pass on the new (Extended Support enabled) keys.. then one can use those ✯different✯ key.
.
All this, in so far as i understand, can not be done directly between EULA holder and Microsoft

Don’t know about VM, but some MVP/ online evangelist of MS.. had said that the people with disabilities feature and upgrade from Win7 to Win10 was still open (end of December).
That was obviously for normal builds like Win Home, Pro et al.
Maybe switching to LTSC too might have a way. (for ghose with a legally recognised installation of Win7/8)

Best way theoretically is to download the ISO from MS servers and activate it with those OEM keys available on ebay for a few dollars. Or activate it with KMS ALL Activator from MDL forums. I took the latter route.

That’s exactly what it means to pirate. wink

I also did the same. With MS Office too.
