[Melbourne] Cheap Hotel and Hostel/boarding booking help needed
Hi dimers!
My wife and I would be traveling to Melbourne (Australia) this month end. Would like to know if there are any cheap options available for hotel (for two days for a couple) and a hostel/boarding/PG for a single lady (my wife) for a few weeks or months starting from April first week. I could find a backpackers dormitory on goibibo for less than 1500 INR, but it doesn’t seem to offer private rooms. Rather it has got multiple stacked up beds in a single room/common space (makemytrip doesn’t have cheaper ones). Though this would be ok for the first couple of days (better suggestions welcome! ), I would like to book a hostel or boarding for a single lady from April first week onwards (on a weekly/monthly basis) as my wife will be staying there while I come back to India. Any help would be appreciated! We aren’t looking for a luxurious stay.

Hi from a dimer!
@keeleriachu
First of all, let me assure you guys are going to love Melbourne city. Its is serene, it is beautiful, it is just immaculate.
By the way, you guys must be knowing that Melbourne houses the maximum Indian population in the Kangaroo land.
→ Getting straight to your query, I would suggest you to book a budget hotel for first few days of your stay.
Check out HotelsCombined listings for Melbourne here – https://www.hotelscombined.com/Hotels/Search?de...
I prefer HotelsCombined to MMT for my abroad trips since :
1. It compares a lot of travel portals for best price.
2. Many a times I get the option to Pay directly to hotel.
3. Asking price is usually very competitive.
4. Can sort hotels after including Taxes
5. Plenty of images are provided and are usually actual images.
6. Reviews are close to reality mostly.
→ I seriously can’t decide on your behalf.
But keep in mind the following while you are taking a call on Melbourne stay :
1. Nothing is CHEAP in Melbourne. Its expensive even by Australia’s standards.
2. Since the lady is going to stay solo for a longer period, her safety and comfort should be priority. Not the money.
I have been to Melbourne and shopping there is a bad idea. Its just too expensive
Save money by not shopping and invest it at the right place (boarding and lodging).
By the way, while you will be in Melbourne, try to see someone from the Real Estate (renting), and ask them if there is a single person accommodation available at an Indian owner’s house !
I think she will be much more comfortable staying there and you would probably be saving money. (1 ka 2 offer).
I am not able to give you specific area recommendations, or suggest you properties because I have my relatives in Melbourne and I have been staying with them whenever I pay a visit to the city.
In all, you can be totally assured that the city is safe. Safer than the safest places in India.
Good luck Folks !

@19FemaleGurgaon – Thanks for the insight! I’ve managed to find a bed in a shared accommodation (3 bed) for her on airbnb for 520 AUD per month – thought the owner is not willing to let it out on a weekly basis – which most of the owners in Aus do. The amount is pretty decent; but still searching for more affordable options. I understand that the city is very expensive to live – and thanks for the reminder! Will be booking the hotel for the first few days and the room for wifey by EOD. Will update this thread once I finalize things and till then let it stay open to suggestions
^^ airbnb charges a whooping amount as commission. Almost 70-80% of the room amount. If I try to book a room for 150-160 AUD (per week), it comes ~290 in total
Update
Back from Melbourne. Booked all the rooms via airbnb and they were cheaper than hotels on goibibo or makemytrip. The rooms for wifey (after my departure) were also booked via airbnb on a weekly basis. Melbourne is a nice place btw and has good public transport connectivity Thanks to all who poured in their suggestions. Much appreciated!
