Dear friends,

Am in confused state and need some guidance fr a job

I have completed my B.tech this year with 76% from Mechanical Engineering Branch, As a fresher am confused totally by listening reviews many ppl around me. Some people tell me to do Mtech, Some says its useless to do Mtech as people who does it mainly get lecturer job, some give advice me to join anywhere and remove fresher tag asap, some says prepare for govt exams or cat etc etc.,

Recently I got odder letter from a company after successful interview process. Its mentioned they r hiring me for the post of “Graduate Engineer Trainee”, They also told me that they will give training for Autocad & GIS (Geographic Information System). For that I have to sign a bond for a period of 1 year with them.

I wanted to know about the future & growth of this GIS, how is this field and is it a IT-software field..

1st i took it lite bt my reporting tym is coming very near and I have to take some decision.

any review/idea/advise from you people will give me some boost as am not getting proper guidance https://cdn3.desidime.com/assets/textile-editor/icon_sad.gif

satz – which GIS company is that?
GIS there are diff kind of roles, mostly in to support i.e. similar to that of Google Maps… no future in such roles.
If its in to development, then you can take up but let me know the company name so I can check more if possible.

I personally would suggest you to do M.Tech, ofcourse depending on the family situation i.e. if you are rich or moderate rich, then go ahead with M.Tech. Its difficult to pursue higher education once you start working (remember its not impossible).

Govt jobs is something you may need patience (wait time) and they also depends on what kind of reservation you hold (i hate this reservation based on caste)

EDIT: Dont simply fall for early earning unless and until there is a dire need.

Once that’s done, then these jobs, bonds, MTech, MBA etc will become useless https://cdn1.desidime.com/assets/textile-editor/icon_biggrin.gif

MTech is only useful only if done in a field in which is relevant to your earlier studies as well as your interests.
If you get an IT job after MTech., it will be a waste.

I would suggest to accept your placement offer and explore other further after working for a year or two.
After 2-3 years, you can do GRE and study abroad for MS or within India also.

This is indeed more of a data entry. You cant expect growth in this field. As suggested in PM, better to call the company and check the exact nature of job. You know your personal situation and ambitions best, so based on whatever i quoted, jus evaluate and decide.

All the best! and Hope you take right step and have a great future! https://cdn1.desidime.com/assets/textile-editor/icon_smile.gif

In my opinion, based on the things you have discussed here::

1. ABAS is an ERP suite which, on learning, will definitely help your career. ERP suites are generally the ones used to integrate all the business functions of a company like Sales, marketing, Finance, Distribution etc. (Kinda like SAP ERP)

2. AutoCad is a software every Mechanical Engineer should have studied in Engineering and is quite useful in work for them.

3. Argcis : As per my info (from internet) is also used for mapping services, so i would say, it goes along with your job requirement and that is why they have told you to get trained in it.

4. Also my guess is that, this being a niche job, no. of companies in India might be very less but it would have huge scope outside India and also would help you if you decide to do MS in such a thing.

PS: I am just a Software Guy (Consultant https://cdn2.desidime.com/assets/textile-editor/icon_toungueout.gif), so i would suggest to consult other persons who are also working in this field. I might be wrong (i hope not) https://cdn1.desidime.com/assets/textile-editor/icon_biggrin.gif

Bro.. I have been working in a Core Engineering Design/EPC Company for more than 5 years now..and I can tell you that growth of Core Engineering Branches(Mech,Civil,Electrical) is much better in Core Companies than in IT. You should see long term perspectives of growth and not just 4-5 years down the line..

Also, the GIS spatial analysis is not a Data entry or IT job… It is a service used for laying of Cross country pipelines, transmission towers, Network Coverage simulations and many other aspects of Big engineering projects..Even we have a GIS group in our organization, A small team of around 20-25 people work on the GIS mapping and other essential layout of our projects…

As we all know that the domestic market is in slump and there are not many jobs available for freshers..
Also you have not mentioned your GATE/GRE score..I assume you would have to prepare for it and that itself would take a year…better is to join the company and get some corporate exposure and in the mean time prepare for GATE…nowadays most of the PSU BHEL,NTPC,BPCL,IOCL take candidates based on their GATE score..

I wish you best of luck for your future..

my 2 cents…

if situation permits do not stop studying.. MS is the best option US is good but costly..

best cost effective option is Germany.. many of my friends and juniors are doing from Germany who have graduated from Mech…

Job is something which you will get anytime.. but it is difficult to switch from salary to education.. https://cdn1.desidime.com/assets/textile-editor/icon_smile.gif

why sir ! or may be those were the early days of DD.

by the way, you are the earliest of the regular members here [i mean user 1 and user20 hardly show up in DnD, except for laa and aader issues (law and order)]

so would you know of any senior/ experienced and/or sensible Mechanical Engineer background Dimer or Dimers ?

@tolerable_bhakt please do check with Barood bhai or others here if they can give you more relevant domain specific career guidance. unfortunately, off-hand even i am not able to recollect anyone from the field who’d have seen few years of industry to guide you on the best course.

Hope some of the people here share any tips or better ways for a fresher to make it better. Especially if not coming from Top City colleges and yet looking to go through the grind in core field.

@tolerable_bhakt for now i did not know of anyone so i bumped this tangential topic. but i’d say, it is okay to start a fresh one by userself. and sorry if you wanted it to be discreet, but i did seek your ‘go green’ and so tagged you in open, thinking that it might help.

@TronGalaxy @eeeyes @pankaj.gupta86 @sarora @anicool007 @goldigger (or @goldi ) , @Gr@h@m@lkene™ Sir or @dharmanath481 Sir if any of you got any advice or pointers for him. (saw you all post on similar topics or mention having experience. thus the tag)

If you have an appetite for studies do your masters if your parents can afford it. Because once yoy get in a job you will find it difficult to leave and get back to studies. In companies pay grade depends on your qualifications.
today had a talk about careers with my daughter and here are some excerpts.
India is the only country where you can jump slabs. In UK a constable becomes police chief with no exceptions. In India it can never happen because only an IPS passed person can be one.
A NDA passout joins straight as a junior commissioned officer straight some 6-7 levels up in the hirerche.
while in a mfg company
a Diploma holder joins as a shopfloor trainee.
A graduate joins as a technical assistant
while an MBA joins straight as an assistant manager.
sane company different levels of joining in hierarchies just on qualifications. So make your own inferences.
In Goa a lit of Msc IT and maths wirk for just 6.5k per month for experience. while in a big name company people pay to work as a trainee.
Find your nieche….

wow you think that’s easy? on a lighter note

  • DJ : market is dominated by foreigners in Goa. You will have to try luck only at birthday parties abd without local konkani and without contacts difficult.
  • waiter : usually dominated by up and bihari public. most of these buggers are absconding murder convicts and criminals . No jokes because why the hell these buggers land in a small obscure town in Goa with skeletal police force? I you think waiter job will get you see Goa its only a dream.
  • steward / bartender : wouldn’t get job in a hotel without experience.
  • tourist guide : foreign language at least 2-3 required.
