Airtel poor security practice against potential sim fraud cases

My friend upgraded his 3g airtel sim to 4g.As per TRAI instructions, incoming sms service is to be disabled for 24 hours after any such sim upgrade/replacement to prevent sim frauds(no otp so no transaction possible) & my friend also got the same msg from airtel. However just after the new 4g sim activated,my friend started receiving sms within half an hour. He checked & found out he could receive otp from all services incl google, banks, upi apps etc. I have also upgraded an idea sim & couldn’t receive any sms for at least 27-28 hours after the new 4g upgrade sim was activated.

This is a very poor behaviour by airtel in this case.I don’t know if this was a one time case or if airtel regularly does this hence posting here to know more.If airtel indeed does this more often than other providers then it is better to link your bank account to a non-airtel number to reduce chances of any potential fraud.

I had upgraded my Tata Docomo nos. to Airtel 4G a few months back and SMS service had indeed been blocked for 24 hours.

Did this a few days back and the SMS was blocked. I did get Airtel service SMSs

No idea why OP did get the OTP.

Also Jio doesn’t block any SMS after Sim change. At least they do not do in Kolkata

Bhai I also want to enjoy life that is why these things are necessary.Imagine yourself in a sim swap fraud victim shoes then you will realise that a few hours of not getting otp for a single day for much more peace of mind is really worth it. Many of these sim swap frauds occur at night/early morning when people are sleeping exactly because of this reason because you won’t notice that signal from your sim is gone. Of course you will definitely notice loss of sim signal in 24 hours & immediately realise something is wrong.

If what you are saying is true(about vodafone) then it is a sad repetition of callous attitude of Indian companies/institutions regarding security(pnb let a single manager manipulate huge amount worth of entries in their swift system without even a basic reconciliation check resulting in a billion dollar scam,1.3 million Indian banks cards details available in online black market a few days ago & now a nuclear power plant was hacked by North Korean hackers using compromised email of ex-atomic energy commission chairman). pensive
