Dear All,

I am looking for my first Credit Card and need help, suggestions and healthy discussions pertaining to anything about Credit Cards

Purpose : My primary purpose of getting a Credit Card is improving my CIBIL Score as I intend to buy a house next 3 years down the line.

Some details : Age 23, Salary is frankly good enough to get any Credit Card, Not an impulsive shopper though Phones are my weakness but in recent times I have been able to curb on it .

My typical online usage : All the routine online payments and big ticket online purchases in my household I intend to route it through my account .

Typical Payments: Mobile Bills( Courtesy Jio has reduced drastically ) , Electricity Bills, Internet Bills , Online Grocery Shopping, Restaurants ( Fast Food Joints and Stuff maybe once every week or fortnigh) , BMS maybe once a month and rest Electronics and Apparel Shopping and Vacations/Getaways and sometimes online medicines too ( non-frequent but worth mentioning )

Max to max intend to spend lets say 6k to 8k a month using the card inspite of all the above mentioned purchases and its after keeping a buffer margin . A big shopping like a Phone or some other heavy electronics or a trip may increase my spending in some of the months.

Payments : I am no way intending to improve my current Lifestyle or living standards its only that I want to improve upon my CIBIL Score so all the payments would be made in time/within the due date .

I have been approached by Citi for Premium Platinum Rewards cards and have yet to give them a consent on the same. First year is free and then from next years fees will be waived if spends cross 30k a year . I have also read about the HDFC Diners Club card so confused which one should I opt for keeping in my above shopping needs

I have read almost all the previous threads on this topic and have created a new one as the threads with the most information are atleast an year old . Tagging all the dimers whom I feel are relevant to discussion in the next post .

By the time u think of property, its price will jump by 25%, at this stage u r thinking much more on credit score, which is not so relevant.

Better, spend energy on getting the right place, right builder, house on resale, price rise.

+ your net saving in future including increased life style, which is not going to descale and puts a maximum burden /drag.

Please chk a thread on Amex Gold charge card, perfect service. Only issue is amex offline acceptability outside malls is low.

2. If u want visa , go for HDFC visa or SBI visa.

3. Later on u can try Rupay card in case some discounts r available , chk with the bank , where u have salary acx.

Why ignore HDFC Diners card??

Acceptability is the issue.

Yes, it is good option if u want cc just for the sake of it and asap get it framed and hang on ur wall like @apahich

absolutely rubbish.. https://cdn3.desidime.com/assets/textile-editor/icon_lol.gif ….It is accepted at a lot of places now…That was 2 yrs ago when acceptability was an issue. Not anymore. And it is one of the best if not the best amongst credit cards

I think if you are willing to apply for credit card only for home loan then it doesn’t make sense .

As per me if you are going for basic credit card then best value for money is RBL card which give bookmyshow and KFC voucher. As per process wise getting SBI credit card is too smooth in fact if you apply on line and if it is approved after completing the online detail you can get card within 6-7 days only submitting I’d and address proof

Have you never considered things like identity theft? I personally know someone who was shocked to discover from his CIBIL report that one of his distant family members took a loan on his name without his knowledge. Yes, these things still do happen. So it’s always better to look at your own report before you go seeking your first credit card or a new loan.

Moreover, it’s important for his credit report to reflect his current salary for him to have a decent chance at getting a credit-card approval as a person without any existing credit.

There has to be an identity for its theft to happen, right? You are perfectly right in cases like @PaytmKaPoojari ‘s and yours. I haven’t had the necessity to consider it in my own case so far. https://cdn2.desidime.com/assets/textile-editor/icon_toungueout.gif

I have used all bank credit cards expect axis card, that also recently i have applied.

As per my knowledge Citi rewards card is best one, no annual fees if you used for 30k annually, continues rewards points and good customer service, if you missed to pay overdue amount within due date and later paid before next statement, then they will not charge any interest fees.

Worst one is SBI cards, no customer service, if need then you need to wait at least 90 mins in customer care call center queue to speak any agents, if you are lucky then the agent can resolve the issue, else the will told robotic reply send email to us.
Then again you have wait at least 7 working days for the mail acknowledgement, and solution for your problem it will take around 30 working days.

All other bank cards are normal, but indirect charges are there.

So i recommending to go for Citi cards.

But their services are limited to city area only, before applying the card take confirmation from Citibank.

bro, lets start from basic.

ur req is HL. so based on this do the below.

1. identify the most probable builders u may go for.
2. then identify the bank tieups with them.
3. get those bank cards. even basic ones will do.
4. try to have sb accts also in the same.

all this will help u have a better relationship n get good loan rates n smooth approval.

i believe have cards with the most probable bank which u may go for HL will smoothen ur HL.

apply for those cards which have 99.99 acceptance vs rejection.

u can always increase cc limit afterwards n u can upgrade if u want.

from all the discussion in the thread. ur getting diverted from ur main target of HL n going on best cc for ur spends.

I can give you millions of suggestion here but I neither want to read the entire thread as its long and my heath is not alright. But in short, I would suggest you only 2 cards based on my rationale-

1. Citi cards because they provide you good rewards.
2. HDFC cards because they are very flexible people. There might be some events where you are not able to make the payment on time, HDFC will reverse the penalty charges on request but Citi will do it only once.

Rest other cards:
1. Amex- Awesome cashbacks.
2. SBI- Too many cashbacks.

Essence of all: Yes a credit card will certainly improve your credibility provided you make the payments on time. Don’t keep more than 2 credits in one point of time. You will only increase your problems. Experienced it and trying to pass it on to you before you get into mud.

I don’t know which bank to choose but maybe a loan from SBI as it’s generally the cheapest or maybe a hdfc . But can’t tell for sure at this moment which builder I would buy my house from maybe 3 years later and which bank the guy would have tie up till the time period . Ill be zeroing in on my preferred banks and try to identify ways to build good relationships with a bank maybe SBI or hdfc or icici . But SBI cc I don’t think is the best option as esaki pointed out . Maybe give hdfc diners a try to build a relationship

Can’t go through all the previous replies but I’m sure dimers are pro here to solve any query.

My advice: if you have salaried account, go to that bank and ask for the credit card. That’s the first step you should do.

After 6 months+, apply for the cc you like.

Go for a card from the same bank where your salary gets credited, yoy will get a higher limit.
Never use more than 50% limit and ALWAYS pay in full. Make sure to use ATLEAST 5% limit every month.

ya sbi cc is not upto mark but i beleive u should have a sbi card coz ppl usually prefer sbi loans due to valid reasons. have atleast one sbi cc.

This reminds me someone posted here in a thread that increasing CC limit and spending very less will boost credit score. Was it @A2Zdeals ?

eat more (obviously healthy & proteins) gain more… May be said by you https://cdn3.desidime.com/assets/textile-editor/icon_lol.gif
Being credit hungry has both effects, if you eat too much, indigestion, acidity etc can happen
So in case you have credit say 2 lacs but you utilize some x% & keep paying on time it boosts credit score. And with credit card usage is better than no credit Card for credit score.
Reverse goes when you consume all of your limit & miss payments. So do go for credit cards. They are not bad, they are like protein milkshake but you need some exercise to absorb them I.e. Payment on time, wisely using limit.

Heard Kotak credit cards are not that great but yaa I can give a thought to that option too . I need max a 1l credit card ( or if getting 2 50k each ) cause my utilization for the initial 2 years won’t cross max 35k in a month including the electronic purchases or even a vacation plan . Also @panchabhut as u rightly pointed out what should be a good credit utilization limit range . I will be doing somewhere from around 10% generally to max spending upto 35% in say 2 or 3 months of a year considering a total credit limit of 1 lac

I dont know whether you have gone through this one?

https://www.desidime.com/forums/freebies-all-fre...

As you don’t have eligibility or income issues, let me tell you first that having relationship with bank would not yield much of benefit for home loan unless that relationship tier is good. E.g. for HDFC bank if its Imperia or something.
So you can opt for credit card of any bank.
And CIBIL score is one of the factors which Banks & FIs gorge upon before extending credit facilities. There are various things. CIBIL report gives your credit behaviour.

Go for any bank credit card with matching rewards for your desired spending
Though I like to go for FREE cards & without any waiver condition cards but most cards now have some fees :

My picks for you would be :
1. HSBC Visa Platinum Card – General Spends
Features :
Get 10% cashback (upto Rs. 3000) on spends in the first 90 days of card issuance. A minimum of 3 transactions should be done in each of the 3 months to qualify for this cashback.
3 Times Rewards (3X) on all spends at dining, hotels and telecom categories for the first 12 calendar months from the date of card issuance.
Bookmyshow Saturday One on One Free offer
Cleartrip 1200 off Offer

Pro Tips : After initial cashback this card is not of much gain on spends but its lifetime free plus there are bookmyshow, cleartrip, firstcry offers which are merchant specific so it will be useful

2. SCB Super Value Titanium Card – Bills & Fuel Spends
Features :
This is chargeable card but you may try your luck for waiver
This is one card which I would suggest you to go for despite of fees as it offers 5% off on mobile, utility, fuel
100 max per transaction i.e. Rs. 2000 spends
So you save max 500*12 = 6000 plus SCB specific offers are always there
On Festive occasions they bring spends based offers too
Pro Tips : Even on loading Paytm you get 5% cashback as Paytm is considered as Mobile
If you want free card then go for SCB Platinum Rewards Credit Card (apply online to get free) or SCB Landmark Rewards Platium Card

3. Kotak Feast Gold Card – Dining Spends
Features :
On a total purchases including Dining & Movies spends of 5000/- or more within the billing cycle you will Earn 10 DINING POINTS for every 100/- spent on Dining (stand-alone outlets ) and Movies. 1 Dining point = Re. 1
Dining points is given on the first 5 Dining & Movie transactions, up to a maximum of 600/-dining points. Dining & Movie Transactions up to Rs. 4000 are eligible for dining points
Dining points for a particular billing cycle will be credited in the next billing cycle.

Pro Tips : This is good card for dining out as it saves 10% Max 600

4. RBL Fun Plus Card – Movie & Pizaa Hut Spends
Features :
Annual Fees 499
Welcome Benefits worth र 1000
10% discount on movies at BookMyShow Max 100
On spending 5000 anywhere in a month :
Complimentary BookMyShow voucher worth र 500 every month
Complimentary Pizza Hut or KFC vouchers worth र 300 every month

Pro Tips : Fees for 2 years is recovered by welcome BMS voucher of 1000
Spend 5K anywhere in a month & earn 500 BMS voucher + 300 PH / KFC voucher
Value for money card

5. Any HDFC Card
As HDFC is Baap of all cards & have maximum offers on merchants
Most of its cards are coming Free these days

- – - – - — – — – — – — – — – — – -
Apply for credit cards through CB site like Zingoy or CK > BankBazaar > credit card
You will earn cashback on this application approval
You have missed on BankBazaar Credit Cards Sale where they gave away 1500 worth Amazon eGVs etc

For Home Loan my suggestion is to go for HDFC Ltd. if you want good customer service & hassle free processing plus competitive pricing
ICICI & SBI both are painful
Yaad rakhna : Sasta roye baar baar, SBI Cheap loans will make you weep

Would strongly suggest Diners card..have been using it for 2 years and super happy with the offers. Also, the acceptability is pretty decent these days. In addition, the offers do make the deal a lot sweeter! 10x points on Flipkart, Goibibo, Big Basket, Uber, Lifestyle, Make My Trip, Myntra, Book My Show, Red Bus and Luxehues – that covers all my online transactions https://cdn1.desidime.com/assets/textile-editor/icon_smile.gif

Go for the Diners Premium card only, not Rewardz. Premium has an upper cap of 10,000 points every month while Rewardz has a cap of 2500 points only.

I use RBL, Axis, SBI, HDFC & ICICI.
All are great and serves the purpose on different different occasions.

RBL gives 500 BMS and 300 Pizzahut/kfc every month so it serves my movie purpose. And never use RBL for EMIs cos their charges are really high.

ICICI gives good payback points and the customer support is excellent and have some good restaurants covered under Culinary Treats for fine dining.

Axis brings plenty of offers both online and offline.

HDFC is great if you want higher limits as they keep on increasing based on your transactions. HDFC is actually good if you looking for loans as they give pre approved loans based on your performance.

SBI I use for small purchases.

So I would suggest you to get alteast 2-3 cards cos just 1 won’t solve the purpose if you looking for offers.

Use the card wisely and if you can control your spending then Credit Card is a great thing to have.
