my grand dads cdma sim was upgraded to jio 4g now he needs a new smartphone. i suggested him coolpad note 3 as the budget was around 7-8k. however when he went to the store, the personnel told him coolpad lite has band 3 and 40. where as jio requires band 3,5&40. i need help from someone who uses jio on coolpad note 3. also help from people having technical knowledge would be great as he is in need of a new phone.

Yes it has only band 3(1800Mhz) and band 40(2300Mhz) (checked on gsmarena and amazon both.)
Rcom has its own band 5(850Mhz) for 4g. So phone with all 3 band is necessary. You can check below list for smartphones supports all 3 bands.
Some latest smartphones like meizu m3 note are missing from the list, so you have to check that if you want to buy any latest one.

Will he be able to use it? If not then why bother with a smartphone?

Get a Samsung phone better warranty and less reliability issues.
RCOM 4G will latch on Band 3 and Band 40 as well in association with Jio.
No worries go ahead and get him a Coolpad Note 3.
More than 50% 4G handset currently in India supports 3,40 only.
Band 5 is good for indoor coverage whereas Band 40 is for speed.
Samsung J7 or J5 or Redmi Note 3

he lives in a flat where he faces Network issues which is why band 5 is needed.
