It is not duty free, its just the increase in limit which was 2000 from the days of License Raj.

No, all the duties/tariff applicable will still remain as is and they have made it 50k just on paper. Actually as per rules without getting a license you are not supposed to import anything exceeding these limits (this was done previously just for conserving the limited foreign reserves). But this is not being followed and you can still import products more than this value even without a license for personal use. This notification doesn’t change anything for us end users and is a non-event.

As much as i understand, It is the increase in value of goods that you can import without needing any IEC or import license.
There was limit of around 10-20K earlier up to which buyers could import products. 2K might be on paper but 10-20k was generally accepted by post.

is this limit for invoice marked as purchased item or parcel written as gift item ??

Check this , it seems we can import for personsl use without any license

Write of that article is confusing between limit allowed without license and custom duty itself. Custom duty may still be there for items below 50K

There wasn’t even 10-20k limit either. I have got goods worth more than $2k in single shipments from amazon who declare the actual value. I don’t think there was any threshold or at least no one bothered when it was for personal use.

Yes, But the Amazon Global parcels come via commercial channel and are cleared by likes of DHL, UPS, Fedex , i-Parcel etc. They include counter-vailing duty when calculating total customs.

If we get the parcel for personal use, then counter-vailing duty shouldn’t be there and only Basic duty should be there. Out custom officials won’t really bother and i think they will keep calculating duty as they did before. They charged very random duties – sometimes 0 and it is 40% at other times.

Good point.
I remember few years back government excluded TV’s from duty free limit. Not sure if the rules still exist.

As you brought this up, again for the ’n’th time amazon refunded my customs deposit just now for my hard disk purchases. I don’t how much loses these lazy officials are causing to the exchequer (not that I am complaining). But 8 out of 10 times I get my customs deposit refunds from amazon and the other 2 times would be those negligible customs fee in the range of $4-$5. https://cdn2.desidime.com/assets/textile-editor/icon_smile.gif

According to a new provision passed by the Ministry of Commerce and Industry in India, the C.I.F value of import of consumer electronic items for personal use is enhanced to 50,000 INR. Which means you can now import consumer electronic items like smartphone from US and other countries to India, which costs up to 50,000 Rupees without any custom duty.

Indian customs work in mysterious ways. Last month I imported a DAC worth 8k from US which was delivered via DHL and then handed over to India Post. Paid no customs. Imported another receiver via ICC world worth 8k and paid Rs.2500 customs. So it all depends upon the channel via which you are importing. In my observation through years, it depends upon the importer’s willingness more than anything. Yes believe it or not. I remember once importing 2 used modems worth 5 dollars each and paying more than Rs700 for customs. The reason being the importers I used for the service was HopshopnGo. Who like ICC world or any other private importer are unwilling to stand up for their customers’ interests. They are more inclined to give the money to customs so they don’t have to face questionnaire later.

That’s wrong interpretation. No where in that notification have they spoken about customs tariff. They have formalized the informal procedure which existed by increasing the CIF value from 2k to 50k that’t it. It has no impact on anything in the form of customs fee or it won’t stop us from importing something valued more than that either.

@thrifty_indian

No they don’t have international warranty but whenever someone comes here I would send it through them to my sis. She gets the RMA done and would send through someone who is coming to India. But I had to do it only once and that too for a SSD in my RAID 6 array which was not a good thing to do (at least people suggest not to use SSDs in that config). None of the WD RED disks have failed till now.

Yeah sheer luck of lazy customs officials. It might happen but there is not way of telling that for sure that you be refunded. If you importing there is no way of avoiding those charges. In fact amazon is the best in this regard and have the best shipping charges.
