No online retailer in India will be even half Flipkart’s size by March 2016, a senior executive said, firing back at Snapdeal which claimed that it is on track to dethrone the Bengaluru-based company as the market leader.

Flipkart will sell goods worth $10 billion (Rs 65,000 crore) during fiscal 2016, and “nobody will be even half of that”, the company’s head of commerce Mukesh Bansal told ET. “There is not a shred of doubt based on all the market numbers we have today.”

Flipkart’s retaliation follows an unusual direct attack by Snapdeal Cofounder and CEO Kunal Bahl who told ET in an interview published on Monday that “whatever their (Flipkart’s) numbers are, we will be ahead of them by March (2016).” Bahl also questioned the wisdom of fashion portal Myntra, which is owned by Flipkart, going app-only, describing the decision as the “most consumer-unfriendly idea I have ever heard of.”

Snapdeal’s salvo and Flipkart’s counter-attack come just ahead of the festival season when consumer spending will be at its peak and retailers will compete aggressively for market share.

This year, the contest is expected to be particularly fierce because online retailers are backed by stores of investor money like never before.
Bansal, who cofounded Myntra, said Flipkart is aiming to sell goods worth $100 billion in 5-7 years, by which time he predicted that the retail industry would be worth $1 trillion with online sales accounting for 15-20 per cent of the total. “We will have more than 70 per cent market share that will help us cross $100 billion,” he said.

Flipkart’s fashion category, including Myntra, has crossed $1.5 billion in gross merchandise value already, said Chief Business Officer Ankit Nagori.

GMV is an important metric that online retailers use to measure growth, and valuation is dependent in large part on this number.

Companies are not obliged to publicly disclose GMV, and ET is not able to independently verify their claims.

So far this year, Snapdeal has raised $500 million from Foxconn, SoftBank and Alibaba while Flipkart is reported to have closed $700 million in funding. Amazon, the global leader, has committed a total of $7 billion for investment in India, and Paytm has suddenly emerged as a viable contender after securing about $600 million from the Alibaba Group.

The pre-Diwali sale will be closely watched, particularly because of the embarrassment for Flipkart last year when it botched its ‘Big Billion Day’ sale that was hampered by technology snafus and a clogged delivery network. This time the company says it is well-prepared.

Bansal, 39, defended the decision to take Myntra app-only, saying revenue is now higher than when the switch from the Web was made. “We have recovered and gained ground. Time spent on the app has gone up by more than 50 per cent,” said Bansal, who estimated Myntra’s GMV at over $500 million.

Online retailers are burning cash — Goldman Sachs estimates gross losses of 35 per cent on GMV — to win market share, but Flipkart’s contention is that older categories are either profitable or close to profitability. “Our per-unit economics are twice as efficient as any other large player in the market. We are not dependent on financing for an eventual path to profitability,” said Bansal.

New York-based Tiger Global, South African media conglomerate Naspers, Accel Partners and Russian billionaire Yuri Milner’s DST Global are among the main backers of Flipkart, which was founded by IIT-Delhi graduates Sachin Bansal and Binny Bansal in 2007. Myntra was acquired by Flipkart last year.

Flipkart recently hired top technology talent from Google and Motorola to lead product development. Earlier this year, it reorganised its business into three main parts comprising ecommerce, supply chain and advertising.

Diwali sales may help Snapdeal reach top

E-commerce firm Snapdeal, which is eyeing the top slot in the sector by selling more on its platform than market leader Flipkart, is preparing to show the first set of results when online festive sales kick off next month. With China’s Alibaba as a strategic investor now, Snapdeal festival sale is expected to have an edge, a source said. But, the company didn’t comment on Alibaba’s role in the upcoming event.

Srinivas Murthy, who recently joined as the marketing head at Snapdeal, told Business Standard that the traffic and sales would see a “huge multiple” jump on the festival offer days. There would be “meaningful category additions” and “crazy offers”, he said. A festival campaign is in the works but must be kept under wraps for competitive reasons, Murthy said.

Last year, traffic had jumped 15 times on its ‘Big Sale Day’ on October 6, when it had clocked Rs 1 crore a minute of sales over a period of 10 hours.

Big Sale Day was Snapdeal’s response to Flipkart’s Big Billion Day.* Big Billion Day sales, at $100 million (Rs 600 crore at that time) for 10 hours, was similar to Snapdeal’s numbers.* For both, the festival sales of last year had fired their respective GMV (gross merchandise volume), a nomenclature that e-commerce players use instead of revenue. Snapdeal, at a GMV run rate of over $4 billion as of August, is targeting to beat Flipkart by March. Flipkart, which had an estimated $4 billion GMV in March, is aiming for $10 billion to $12 billion by March next year.

Should the competition worry about the Snapdeal festival sale, which is likely to be more widespread rather than a single-day event? Murthy said, “yes”, echoing the sentiments of co-founder and chief executive Kunal Bahl, who recently said Snapdeal was looking at the number one position by March 2016. ‘’We have been number one on many days. But we must be on the top on a sustained basis,’’ Murthy said.

The run-up to the Big Billion Day in October 2014 had coincided with Amazon founder and chief executive Jeff Bezos’ India visit last year, but Flipkart co-founder Sachin Bansal had to apologise to buyers later for technical glitches during the one-day sale after social media hit out at the firm. Bansal had then promised that the next edition would live up to expectations.

To keep its promise, Flipkart is learnt to have begun preparations very early in the year. Although it refused to reply to any questions related to Big Billion Day, the company has got a large team working dedicatedly on the festival sale.

“On the technology front, we had a fair share of learning from the ‘Big Billion Day’ last year,” Sachin Bansal had told this newspaper earlier. “*There were some glitches but we have made significant progress and used this learning to scale up our technology and supply-chain backbone, to strengthen our demand-predictive capability and make the 2015 version bigger and smoother.”*

Last time, Snapdeal had reacted to Flipkart’s Big Billion Day, but will it set the agenda this time for the industry or follow the leader again? Murthy said, “We always had our own mind, we were not just reactionary last time.” He added, “We reserve the right to tactically respond to any opportunity.”

According to Murthy, who came to Snapdeal with experience from Coca-Cola and GlaxoSmithKline, Diwali sales may be like board exams, but you do study through the year.

Mark my words, Amazon would take up the whole e retail. Flipkart would be the second. SnapDeal would struggle and continue to persist like eBay.
All would happen if they tend to go as such. FlipKart and SD concentrates on cost cutting and marketing. Amazon is pretty straightforward given their usage of Analytics they’ll over throw these people any-day who just mint VC money. SD focus on capturing new customers, FK just takes existing customers for a ride. FKP First is one of the worst service you can ever buy in the market. High five Amazon.
