Was in a similar situation sometime ago
Lost my phone because of my foolishness

I tried to block my number
Contacted Airtel and they blocked my number
Later i realised that incoming calls and texts cannot be blocked. I was surpised by this because a single otp is enough to login to most of the wallets
Been to Airtel headoffice and somehow convinced the executive over there to block incoming calls.
Luckily incoming texts were also blocked

Now-a-days some operators are asking FIR for reissue of sim card
Apart from that FIR is of no use, you will not be getting your phone from them. They wont even care to look after it unless you know someone in the cyber cell

Why not create a thread(preferrably sticky) for the steps to be taken when a phone is lost. That would be pretty systematic to follow.

SIM stops working altogether once blocked, not possible to receive even messages.

Reporting to police is advised to be on safer side in case your phone is misused for some illegal activity by the person who gets access to it.

Nope it wont, at least for Airtel
You will be receiving incoming calls (not sure of sms) even though sim has been blocked

I had to really argue with airtel guys to get the incoming calls barred
Travelled 25kms for 2hrs to the Airtel Head office that day to get the incoming calls blocked

I was in a hurry back then
wasnt online all day
Called 198 and asked them to block my number, even they confirmed me that only outgoing calls will be blocked
then went to the nearest cc, they said like you have to go the main branch for that (may be because my sim belongs to another circle)
The only way to completely block that sim is to take a replacement sim which is not possible in my case

Natural to run short of ideas in such cases, but these days Twitter support of most of the companies/banks is most helpful.

Yep, twitter support is a better idea
I think i mailed Airtel got a response but not that useful

This is the response i got from mail
“Dear Customer,
This is in reference to your email requesting to block the SIM Card of your airtel mobile number 961XXXXXX.

We are sorry to hear about the loss of SIM card/handset and hope that you will be able to recover it soon.

At the outset, we are sorry to hear about the loss of SIM card/handset and hope that you will be able to recover it soon. As requested, incoming and outgoing services for your airtel mobile 961xxxxxxxx have been already blocked effective 01-02-2016.

We would like to inform that you can apply for a duplicate SIM at any nearest airtel store. The mobile number will remain the same. The remaining balance in your previous SIM will be carried forward on the new SIM. However, contacts stored in the lost SIM cannot be retrieved.

On your visit to airtel store, you would be required to carry the documents listed below:

Photo ID proof:

Address proof:

One Passport Size Photo :

Duplicate SIM charges of Rs. 25/- apply. Your duplicate SIM will be activated within 04 hours of applying for the same. For your convenience, we are including the list of nearest airtel store.

Note: SMS services will remain barred for 48 hours after SIM SWAP.

Thank you for choosing airtel."

But incoming calls arent blocked
