Help..!!! WD My Passport 1TB Red HDD Crashed..!!! Important data inside…!!!

Its creating some noise while I am inserting the USB cable and drive also spinning and after sometime which stops.
The LED flashes very fast.

Its is visible in the disk manager but showing as unknown device and not initialized. I tried to initialize but it says fatal device hardware error.

Is there any way to recover ?. I kept some important data inside.

I am adding the screenshots of the device manager. Please help. Thanks in advance.

I feel bad for you man. This seems like some kind of hardware failure as you mention hearing a weird noise on plugging in. I hope it’s a problem with the enclosure. Try removing the HDD from the enclosure and connecting it directly to a SATA port in your desktop. See this: http://www.jrin.net/2013_09_11/how-to-dismantle...

Do this and post back with your findings.

If you don’t have access to a desktop, then you need to get a SATA to USB cable.

Edit: Just discovered that new WD My Passport drives do not come with a SATA connector, but rather with a built-in USB 3.0 connector https://cdn1.desidime.com/assets/textile-editor/icon_eek.gif
You are out of luck trying to fix the issue yourself if your drive happens to be one of the newer ones w/out a SATA connector. BTW, I hope you have already tried connecting the drive to a different computer. Sometimes the USB controller drivers get messed up and you get weird issues like this.

Hi,

First of all try the same HDD on a different computer and see if it makes any difference. If you have a spare hdd cable swap it and see if it works. Usually clicking sound from HDD is a sign of a hardware failure:cry: . If nothing works and data is too important then you may have to take it to a local data recovery service. They maybe able to extract the data out.

Yeah, I noticed that as well. But you might have a different model so open the enclosure and let’s find out.

I have the same one as in the pic…. some pins are there apart from the USB 3.0 what is the use of that?

That sucks! The other pins are probably just jumper pins for hdd activity light on the enclosure. Take your drive to a data recovery place and be ready to part with atleast a few thousand bucks. https://cdn3.desidime.com/assets/textile-editor/icon_sad.gif

If you repeatedly get a click noise DO NOT try connecting it again n again. It will damage the platters and recovery will become impossible.

Yes, I should have mentioned this as well. Good advice!

Assuming that wasn’t rhetorical, HELL NO!

All hard disks fail at some point, but restricting the troubleshooting/repair options to such an extent is a horrible design decision by WD for their My Passport drives. I have been using a Seagate 1TB USB 3.0 drive for 3-4 years now and it doesn’t have this design issue. It has a regular 2.5" SATA II HDD inside the enclosure.

Edit: I should clarify that my comments are about the portable WD My Passport drives that do not have a generic SATA connector. Definitely not discouraging anybody from buying WD drives in general. I have been building my own rigs since 1997. And in all those years, WD and Hitachi have stood out as the most durable HDDs.

Ha Ha Ha Ha.. Ho ho ho ho..

My adata made click sound within 2 months and it works fine. I know u should not risk with it, so got backup of important stuff in pendrives.

I guess, external USB ssd doesn’t fail like this?

SSDs have no moving parts, so they won’t experience the click of death (caused by erratic movement of the head actuator)
Not sure about the catastrophic failure rates of SSDs vs magnetic drives.

First ensure whether it is a physical damage or just a corrupted drive. If it is physical (say clicking noise, hard disk not running etc) you need to stop experimenting now as I said before.

Most important part is that if it is a physical damage do not take it to just any data recovery center. You need to check with someone who does Physical recovery not logical recovery. Most of the umpteen data recovery centers will try to do only logical recovery (ie. using software) and it will worsen the drive condition. Sorry, forgot to tell you this yesterday https://cdn1.desidime.com/assets/textile-editor/icon_sad.gif

Btw, if there is no clicking sound and if the drive runs for a considerable amount of time then try to copy data from it using a linux Live CD.

Im also quite familiar with logical data recovery.. I saved data of many… I saved people from loosing their work of 2-3 years.. but it happened with me… https://cdn1.desidime.com/assets/textile-editor/icon_biggrin.gif

basic small advice apart from all technical stuff..

IMPORTANT data which you were referring, Please make sure its not some adult images. Specially if you have stored a pic or video in last one year of someone you know.

Or some credit card details.

When you go to recovery, they usually see all details and 90% of them results in Porn sites.

Just a advice, if you have better to keep it repaired than going to recovery.

Try to resolve yourself. All the best.

Had bad experience with WD, so have stopped using it. MY HDD failed within warranty period and since I had personal stuff in HDD, didnt even go for replacement as am scared of it ending in Net. Have stopped trusting WD since..

Using Hitachi & Adata for past 2 years now without any issues.

Ans. 1: No. (usually) enterprise business has seperate service contracts. In retail business A.S.S. aren’t known to offer that service. And nowhere is it required to provide it either, as per contract.

Ans. 2: Yes and No. ‘bakre’ ke face expression aur urgency/ body language decide the rate quote, in part. Though mostly it is the level of the problem and how desperately critical the data is.

Though (for retail level) i’ve yet to come across a place that can safely play at the (magnetic) platter or spooler level. I did once know someone who was in that line of work and he told me, that such labs (as where the whole thing is taken apart and) which do platter by platter data analysis and recovery have to be more spic and span than even a heart surgery O.T. . No dust, only super skilled labour and controlled enviornment.

@opium i knew that would be costly… when my HDD crashed in 2010 I came to know about data recovery centers ….but no one was able to give me a proper idea about where could be in my city or even in India …
also gave up the idea after seeing the expenses of recovering lost data in the US webpages
