you’d do yourselves a favour by staying closer to the location from where you need to work or which you need to frequently travel to.. [assuming such travel would be needed]

in case you are acquainted with the metropolis and/or do not mind an hour of travel here and there, you can look for even suburbs.

i do not know if Tata’s Ginger is there around Bombay, but that’d have been a good choice.

depending on your length of stay and how finicky you are in the choice of lodging,
the core areas of old South Bombay have room sharing lodges type places.
some of these have exclusive rooms with just two beds or three beds (as in the occupancy is two/three beds and need to be paid for both.. even if you are occupying just one ). that is if you need the whole room to yourselves, else they can charge you just for the beds you rent, and they can go ahead to rent out the remaining if someone else wants.

those core areas are like Kalbadevi /zaveri bazaar or areas behind Marine Lines/ Charni Road .. or near V.T.

then they dont allow foreigners too ?? As in south india (kerala) most tourist are foreigners especially from spain or europe , 99 % are unmarried, even Kerala is “God’s Own country”, even they allow for night stay in Luxury boats..

I will not suggest any hotels from mira-bhayander coz dat area is fully flooded wid bars…even if u find decent/cheap hotel I will suggest not to make a stay der…coz almost everyday police raids/round offs are common…
Mina international again wrong suggestion coz made a stay der approx 7yrs back during college days nd cost was 3k+ taxes…
U can convince hotel manager somehow in few hotels even if oyo/mmt/goibibo restricts…its all upto how u convince ur hotel manager…nd as said above u can try to book hotel in colaba/cst area as it is good spot tourists are treated very well nd dey will get convinced…nd also der are many budget hotels in dat area…

Btw You are traveling with GF or planning to make one in Mumbai?

Oyo will help you in this case, they added a new category as ‘Couple’ just book hotels from this category and you are good to go. I have personally experience.
If you have doubt call on Oyo care and they will tell you.
