Good question. I’m same in the same boat too. I believe if you don’t need any secondary Android phone, getting the Jiofi makes much more sense. For once, you get to connect to multiple devices( 14-15 via wifi) and also get better battery life. Lyf phones are low end Chinese devices with mediocre performance. They still offer unbelievable value for money with 3 months free offer, but the performance of the phone leaves lot to be desired. I will most probably pick up JioFi.

+1… Only advantage right now jiofi seems to have over phone is to connect 14-15 devices but who needs more than 4-5 which phone is sufficient to provide. https://cdn1.desidime.com/assets/textile-editor/icon_smile.gif

Yeah right we don’t need more than 4-5 device connectivity. Then again jiofi also doesn’t have good range, so it is better to buy a good router to extend the range.

Yeah I was suggesting to buy a lower model flame set rather than buying the jiofi device as it serves many purposes.

Jio customers are debating whether to go for 3.5k phone or 2.9 Jiofi with unlimited internet and calls.spare a though for the poor customers from Airtel, Voda, Idea who might be wondering whether he should recharge with 750 or 1000 rupees to get that princely 5 GB of super net data.

Few months down the line Airtel and likes would not need an IIM graduate to figure out what hit their revenues

These companies looted too much to show the upwards movement in revenue that they can’t even touch the prices now. They have increased the data but not the other way around mean they could have reduced the price but they can’t now. Average Revenue per customers is going down. Jio plans are breath of fresh air, you could not have asked more, its like a dream to access to unlimited data for the whooping three months. Whatever nevertheless the lyf phone is very useful over hotspot device. as one can use lyf mobile as a normal handset after 3 months but you have to continue or have to think differently for hotspot device. so it would be waste of money for those hotspot users who won’t continue after 3 months of free service.

I chose JioFi over a cheap Lyf phone, reasons below:

1. I already have a mobile which I am very comfortable with. And I don’t need a change to that.
>> Even if I needed I would have probably bought some other handsets because LyF mobiles are not that great without the Jio 90 days Offer.

2. I am very much aware that you can create a hotspot plug the phone to a charger and keep it on forever. Well nobody will tell you that there will be few reboots when it gets hot and not to mention the distribution of speed won’t be that great. I have a friend who does that and he tends to reboot the phone after few hours. Well that takes the reliability out.

3. User management is better on JioFi devices, it shows you neatly who’s connected and you can even approve MacIds for connection. It’s a router and its designed to work like one, rather than making a phone work like a router.

4. Cloud via MicroSD. This might not be useful for many users. But keeping few movies/tv episodes in the card helps out file sharing if you are actually using the device with your friends.

Conclusion: If you like the JioFi device, then get it. Few of my known people hate Jio because of the cheap Lyf phones they took. They say mobile hangs & all that issues. If you need a mobile get something in the better range of Lyf. I hate carrying multiple devices and will not part with my beloved phone for some cheapstuff.

Edit: @bhaskarsaha100 raised a very valid point, phone is usable after the 3 months preview offer. I wholeheartedly agree to him. I guess there will be lots of cheap lyf phones on OLX after 3 months (maybe below 800rs), I might get one of those if I direly need a mobile for anything.
And I am sure within few months unlocking of this JioFi device will come out which will help us put any network’s sim if Jio at all doesn’t come out with affordable offers.

better buy a lyf mobile than jiofi u can make calls too with mobile..

Have been using JIO over the past few months and I hardly ever make calls as it’s very unreliable and doesn’t connect more than 50% of the times.

So I personally would recommend a JioFi device over a low quality phone that anyways doesn’t let you make too many calls with the current state of network.

Well said, I am a longtime Vodafone user, generally spend 250-350 a month on Data pack every month. This month onwards I am probably saving that money, even if Jio releases 100rs a few GBs, I will keep using the JioFi device. It’s so neatly pocketable.

@sajalb531 Everyone has their own opinion but extrapolating the experience of one lyf user about his phone rebooting every few hours to everyone else is farce. I own a lyf phone (flame 2) and has been on 24*7 from the past month and have hardly rebooted it a couple of times. My cousin has a Jiofi device and even that is nothing to be boasted off as all these reliance devices are chinese junk.

Everyone should buy based on their needs and not because one is better than the other. Trust me both are junk without the 3 months offer and most of us would donate them to our younger cousins/relatives/domestic helps etc. Also even if you can unlock these jiofi devices, with the current pricing you wouldn’t want to use it with any other operator as a data card.

You are Bang on target.. we are just enjoying a 3 months honeymoon period. The way I & u see it.. we will dispose of our devices post the 3 months period.. So it’s better to buy the cheapest, handiest available one. Simple if you need internet only get the JioFi 2 and if you need calling as well think about choosing any one of those two.

Also probably it’s just me.. I am liking the JioFi 2 device, it feels really a good device and I am sure @ranjithsai01 you are liking your Flame 2 as well. Its all matters which one you like in the end.

So just go to a store, see both devices and buy the one which you like.

jio mifi can be tethered via USB cable with any router that supports 3G/4G USB dongle. Lyf phones, as android devices, can only be USB tethered with limited routers. Without USB tethering, it is not possible to avail full speed benefits while using a secondary router.

I have been using Jio mifi device for past week. I am able to to use it continuously for more than 10 hrs on a single charge.. The device gets little hot after a long time use but not so hot that you can’t hold it. Another advantage is its very light weight only the battery is the weight factor. Also there are lots of jio hotspots around you to which you can connect. Also its better to use your phone on wifi than on data connection(which consumes lots of data). Also i used the jiojoin app for calling, its very good with great call quality and clarity. Many of us already have a phone of our choice (many must be using rn3), whats the use of carrying the another bulky phone with you all the times.
Another thing, the way we guys are using the jio sim for downloads, any phone’s life will reduce after 3 months after heavy use. If the battery life gets reduced you can’t use it even for the normal use too. There is also micro sd card slot which can be used for data sharing over the wifi network.
