Read the comments above. Those are real life experiences and just not from one model. I have been warning people about HP and Lenovo. I own a Lenovo too and like the OP this piece of shit has engulfed much more money than I saved and my peace of mind. I wouldn’t buy anything from Lenovo. Sadly, they bought my fav mobile brand too (motorola).

After years of usage and consideration I would only recommend Dell (even if you have to pay a little more, coz in the long run it will be cheaper). Asus comes second. Rest have pathetic after sales.

Yes, completely agree with you for lenovo. For HP I can only say that Old HP models were very good. They lasts for may years. Like @abcwevr762 said he/she is using it from last 9 years. I am using it from last 7 years and 4 months. I doubt other brands durability. But haven’t bought/used HP laptop recently. So may be quality is down now.

Let me tell you my personal experience with Dell/Dell service center

This is from 2012. My friend had dell laptop in warranty. It had Speaker problem(don’t know what to tell in English but in Gujarati/Hindi we say ‘speaker fatela hai.’ So he told me to go to service center as I live in Ahmedabad and we were studying in Ghandhinagar. There was only one service center of Dell in whole Gujarat that time. Can you believe it? But yes it was true.

So I went there. Service center guy checked it and asked me if VLC is installed or not. (before giving me laptop my friend uninstalled VLC and told me to say no if asked above question. https://cdn3.desidime.com/assets/textile-editor/icon_lol.gif don’t know how but he knew it)

I said yes( as I don’t like to lie) it was installed before, Service center guy told me not to use VLC that after as it can damage speaker.( and i was like WTH https://cdn2.desidime.com/assets/textile-editor/icon_toungueout.gif )They replaced speaker. while I was showing this laptop to service person, another dell customer entered in service center angrily and said that service guy took hard disk or ram (don’t remember exactly) from laptop which he gave for repair.

Even I heard same thing for Lenovo service center. They also take things from users laptop.

Yes the old HP laptops were robust. I had one too which had meagre 128MB dedicated graphics but ran more than 6 years without any trouble. The old HP used to have Altec Lansing speakers which were awesome. I had people walk in my room for the first time and praise the sound. Gone are those days.

P.S> I am still keeping that HP to replace those speakers in my Lenovo.

Its not very surprising if its actually true regarding VLC damaging speakers. Just because its free and multi platform does not mean one has to put up with borderline garbage. Almost everyone I know boost the volume to 200% in VLC. Media Player Classic, Zoom Player, KMPLAYER, POT PLAYER, XBMC/Kodi to give a few examples are way,way better.

Disagree!
There are always issues with each brand. My friends own 4-5 HP laptops and none of them have had any issue. Surprisingly couple of my friends own Dell Laptop and had issues with them. Motherboard of one of the laptop got dead after 14 months of usage. He just used it for studying purposes. Moreover Dell Service Centers are far less as compared to HP. Dell has only one services centre in whole of the NCR so i seriously doubt the after sales service claims

Dell has excellent on-site service even in Tier-3 cities. Personal experience. It was an XPS series laptop so maybe it came with premium service. One day turnaround!

Ever since Dell went private they have been delivering some excellent products. Case in point being the XPS 13 and XPS 15. Free from having to cater to the whims of fickle shareholders who cant seen to see beyond their nose they have flourished. Their consumer satisfaction levels are at new highs.
But budget laptops from almost every brand suffer from some issue or the other. Corners have to be cut to meet wafer-thin margins.

They charge Rs.1500/- for it. I think not everyone can pay this amount just to get it checked

It was in warranty. I am pretty sure that there were no extra charges at that time. XPS laptops anyways come with 1 year on-site service. Also they had no offline presence. HP does and surprisingly Acer until it was closed a couple of years back.

Sh!t this thing did not occur to me, switching it on after charging it for some time but I think I must have tried that though unknowingly since I kept it on charge for quite some time. the first time this issue occurred I slept from the frustration of not being able to get it started, after 3-4 hrs I woke from the noise of the fan of laptop https://cdn3.desidime.com/assets/textile-editor/icon_lol.gif Flipped the screen, opened it after 15 mins everything was normal then, continued to run it without shutting down for more than a month, I was afraid that it won’t start again if I shut it down https://cdn2.desidime.com/assets/textile-editor/icon_toungueout.gif Regarding the laptop he opened it in front of me and the fan was not running, it just started and then stopped, after removing all other components so definitely something wrong with the motherboard. Will update. P.S. It’s a 3.5 yr old laptop, the RAM has been changed twice ( once in warranty and once after warranty) the hinges have been fixed once so total I hv spent around 7k on the laptop as of now any suggestions as to what is limit I should set to spend this time, (I strongly feel that even after this repair the laptop will again have a problem). CC @thrifty_indian @Magus

From your description and at the HP forum it might be problem with dust in the cpu fan. Install http://openhardwaremonitor.org/files/openhardwa... Notice the temp after a few minutes. DOn’t close the software. Keep the laptop running and notice the temp and report back.

No dust or anything, even I had opened it entirely then and clean it, see even @sharad1234 mentions regarding the moisture thing, its been raining since past week even yesterday there was no sun, I thought to keep it in sun for few minutes https://cdn2.desidime.com/assets/textile-editor/icon_toungueout.gif It could have started then. Will go today and try the method sharad suggested there itself. Should I sell this and get a new one? I am reluctant cause I just use it for browsing net and watch movie. Any suggestion as to which one to buy next in this case ? Cc @abcwevr762 @parthponkiya8 PS The VLC thing pis prevalent now too. @abcwevr762 My hinge was jammed and I could not opens the laptop so had to repair it, everyone including the service centre laughed at my problem https://cdn3.desidime.com/assets/textile-editor/icon_sad.gif

Mine hinge’s clean broken in two pieces. Thats what happens when one tries to operate the lid like a harmonium(when the display went black the lid had to be adjusted). Still nothing a couple of bricks cant fix.

Yes that’s what i m saying that they Rs.1500/- for on site service after the warranty period is over but i find this bad as they have less no of service centres and customers are forced to go for on site warranty

Thats too bad then. I was kind of tilting towards Dell but this is a dealbreaker IMO. Even if there is a Dell service center quite close to my home and I always make it a point to splurge for the extended warranty.

Extended warranty is always good. Besides, I would never goto an authorised service center after warranty period expires.

Case in hand, I accidently spilled protein shake on my laptop once. The motherboard fried (not that I thought it would make it more powerful). Lesson One: Never eat/drink on work desk. I went to the service center, they always believe in replacing the components. So, I was immediately quoted the price of new a motherboard (Rs.8000). I researched a little, found a guy who has good hands with circuit boards and repairs. It took a little time to pin point the burnt component but saved me 4k. Lesson Two: Avoid service center after warranty expires.

Yeah Definitely a deal breaker. Abhi lein to lein kya https://cdn1.desidime.com/assets/textile-editor/icon_confused.gif

Thats why I am still chugging along with my relic of a laptop. Not getting another. Desktop FTW. Get a Mac or a premium offering from PC OEMs with the longest extended warranty scheme available.

Bhai ek jagah thodi na baithe rehna hai.. Abhi toh job pe bhi 1 saal pe 2-3 jagah ghuma dete hain.. Hard to have a desktop unless you get a sarkaari job. https://cdn3.desidime.com/assets/textile-editor/icon_sad.gif

I would still point towards Dell or if you want to save a few bucks, Asus. Got a i3 based 15 inch laptop under 21k for father who uses it mostly for docs. But comparing the screen quality I like it more than Dell. Battery backup, no one wins from Dell but still very capable on Asus (better than Lenovo’s 1.5 hours). Never faced an issue with Asus/Rashi peripheral’s after sales.

What does SMD stand for? Have not come across it ever before! SIMD,SMPS but never SMD.
Edit: Surface-mount device. Apparently a capacitor on the mainboard.
Is it inclusive of service charges?

SMD means nothing…it’s a type of component which can be solder with just mounting. A SMD component costs between Rs.20 to Rs.1200 depending upon the ‘actual’ component. But, you have no choice to pay him what he asks.

Ya I was checking their prices online, therefore asked, mostly I guess that solve it it is quite logical of the laptop to not work cause of damaged capacitor.. Will still clarify exactly as what he changed and try to know its price.

unplug the battery…press power key for about 30 seconds to dicharge all capacitors…replug the battery but DONT TRY TO START….keep it on charging for whole night…try to start tommorow.

overnight charging wont do any wrong to your battery since there are sensors that cutoff the power to battery once it gets charged.

Have tried this. Didn’t help.
