Hi I feel nearly all of us have been duped by the offline shopkeepers and sometimes we have no option but to be at their mercy. Lets discuss what tricks they have employed based on your personal experience or of your friends/relatives.

1) My well to do relative bought a LG OLED tv worth rs 1.55 lakhs after discount only to get an old model instead of latest. The shopkeeper didnt have the latest and thus lured him into buying this citing reasons that its indifferent. Later relative realised this and he was willing to shell out 15 to 20k more had he got an even better model with higher features and better picture quality.

2) If the shopkeeper doesnt have stock of something then its not available anywhere at all. This is the most common reply by them, and believe me even Satan himself gets shocked when he hears them lying with such confidence

One more if you tell them that so n so person is selling at so n so cheaper price and you being our friend trying to loot us, they will immediately take out their fake computerized order sheet and show us... Itne ki toh yaar meri khareed bhi nahin pad rahi tumko itna sasta de rahaa hai toh puraane rate kaa padaa hoga uske paas. Mere paas toh nayaa maal 2 din pehle hi aaya hai 😂

I also got scammed by one of salesman, back in 2019 I purchased Yamaha alpha (scooter) but after buying we found out it is a older version of yamaha alpha. We called him again n again but he was not helping and was saying your scooter is latest version. Then we sued him for ₹5 lakh in consumer court (district) the issue is still going on. But the lawyer is confident that the defence will be proven guilty wink . Such people should not be spared.
P.S: the scooter is still in garage and not used a single because of legal purpose

But I think lawyer is taking you for ride? Did seller give you in writing that its the latest model at that time? Hope u have strong evidence. Its very difficult to find "Jethalal" kind of businessman. They cheat friends and relatives most, happened with me.

Another reason which they give: mostly they don’t have the latest model stocks & their reply is:

*Those latest models have some defects

if u tell them online we get cheap they will say:

Online u can’t rely upon, you will get duped
Online you get duplicate products

and whatnot, their level is very cheap.

The most ridiculous excuse shopkeepers used to give:

1) You won’t get a warranty for the products you buy online. Since people have become more aware now this trick won’t work.

2) Now they say online items are duplicate, while even they don’t know whether product they are selling is original or duplicate.

Also, we all know how keen are our beloved shopkeepers in paying taxes!!!

I dont usually buy much especially electronics from local shops. This incident happened 7 or 8 years back. My brother's phone was stolen and he was in desperate need to buy a new phone. He zeroed down to a Sony experia model worth 25k. Flipkart was not very popular back then. We went to a very prominent dealer in my city. Dealer offered the phone for around 30k. I argued stating FK is selling it for only 25k so why should i pay a premium to buy from his store. Salesman's reasoning baffeled me. He said the interior components of phones which FK sells has non genuine chinese parts while the phone his store sells has all genuine parts. Long story short, i called Sony customer care from the store and spoke to a rep. Sony made it clear that their phones on FK were genuine and backed up by warranty. Poor salesman then backed off and sold the phone for same price as FK. I once went to a popular shop that deals with Motorcycle helments. Since there was no MRP sticker on helments , the owner of the shop thought its a good idea to sell the helment 500 rs above MRP . Since i had researched on the product, i knew the MRP. When i confronted the owner, he was giving all sort of excuses like its a new stock bla bla. Ended up buying the helment from a army CSD canteen for half the price quoted by the shop. All the experience i posted above happned in Delhi. I didnt face such experiences in Bangalore, Chennai n all. In Kerala bargaining is very rare. Some shopkeepers gets offended when you tell them that their prices are way off from online prices. I was once quoted a price of 2k for a Belkin fast charger ( MRP) which was listed for some 700 rs on Amazon. My only advise to anyone buying from a shop is, Do your research before you step out. Some people have a habit of buying and then researching only to realize they were short changed. Consumer court and all sounds fancy but takes a lot of effort to get judgement. Shopkeepers also know this.

Upperwala knows how many times these thugs have looted from my dad... I became aware of this when I was 14 and if I pointed out their obvious lies they'll get get very offensive and sometimes downright rude. Shoppers Point- the whole lot, ABM, 2 joint mobile stores in GS road, Novelty... these jerks are not only looters, they're very rude too.

In legal language there is a term Caveat Emptor. Buyers Beware.
Always do proper research and then go to the shop. Also, never show that you are too eager to buy. If the sales person is trying to be too smart, simply say that you don’t want to buy and get out. Most of the time, they come to their senses.

I went to buy Grapes in the market.

I selected the angoor ka ghuchchha and gave him to weight… do you know how he was making fool everybody? He already had loose & bad angoors in his trajoo. So with the selected anoors, he was selling bad ones also without known to the customer. This is usual practice in Delhi.. grrrrrrrrrr!

not all shopkeeers are bad. insaniyat jinda hai abhi.

on saturday we bought a bicycle for son costing 14k. it was 24 inch and our son was short to drive it. so we called the seller telling issue, he said that you should have looked in shop itself, i was starting to argue but surprisingly he asked to come on monday and will see if he can help. yeaterday we went and there was only one 20 inch cycle matching our son’s height that too not mtb but atb (mtb has wide and thick tyres, atb has thin, mtb is light atb is heavy), it was costing 4200. straight away almost 10k less. still shopkeeper replaced it. and that’s not all, he gave us 11800 in return, a 2000 rupees note extra. when we came home and found this i rang him up. he said he will pick extra 2k tomorrow tell address and we found he lives just few house away so i asksd him to come to society gate and take money, he said khaane ka time hai aap bhi khao hum bhi kha len, aapko dena nahi hota to phone nahi karte, kal parson jab bhi time mila le lenge. i couldn’t resists saying aapne itna kiya wo kum hai kya nahi to 14 hazar doob jaate for which he replied, aapka baccha humare bacche jaisa hai, uski khushi pehle hai bhaisahab, paise aate jaate rehte hain.

By the way amazon is selling 24 inch model at 6600 and offline it’s costing 4600. wink

I bought a top loading washing machine for my parents 2 years ago. So, I went to a local shop near my parents’ home. There was this offer you know, you swipe your card on a Pine Labs machine and you ll get 15% back, something like that. Well, the salesman didn’t do that. But he assured me that I ll get the offer. I contacted Pine Lab, they told me that I should have taken a EMI, and then only I would have been eligible for the scheme.
I contacted the shop owner. He returned my money and he took me to another shop of his own. At that shop, we did another transaction on the Pine Labs POS. I got the cashback. My parents really wanted to keep the machine. The shopkeeper made my home happy.
In an another incident back in 28th Oct 2008, I went to a computer Store to buy a laptop. We (me n my Baba, we are best friends you know) zeroed upon a Compaq CQ60 104TU. But I wanted an HP Pavilion, model number I don’t know. My friend bought a Lenovo IdeaPad Y540. It costed him around 56000. My laptop costed me 33000. So, I was feeling a sense of inferior complexity, you know what I mean to say. The shop owner randomly came and gave me some tips about life and how it’s not all about money and how it’s all about hardwork and stuff like that. Then he said one thing, “your parents are doing so much things for you, 10 years down this road, this laptop of yours and that laptop of your friend’s ll not cost that much. So, make peace with your machine and make the most out of it.” He didn’t have to do that, but he did.
On another occasion, I had given a 2k note to a local badamwala instead of 20₹, he called me from behind as I took my pack of roasted peanuts and was leaving in hurry, he gave me back my money.
I eat bananas a lot. During my stay in Chennai, I was buying a kg of Banana, at that time a kg costed 20₹ maybe. I didn’t had the change. The poor dude allowed me to take the bananas. I gave his money back next evening. I am an honest customer, who met an honest seller that day.
I can say a dozen such stories, about interaction among us and shopkeepers.
We are humans. Greed, lust, anger etc are in our blood. Some rotten eggs should never determine the honesty of a community. 🙂🙂🙂🙂
