Do a 1rs transfer with note asking for money back. Do it daily until they give up xD
Depends on the person on receiving end.

No way to recover, now you are on mercy of receiver end, hard but it’s true. So be caution while transferring money.

Npci or airtel can’t do anything, raise a collect request to the vpa explaining the reason. Hope that person sends it back.

There is no way to recover this thing. A chargeback is last resort for this and here i am not sure a chargeback can be raised by Airtel, as chargeback is generally raised for a disputed transaction done for a service done by merchant (here it is money transfer and not a merchant service).

Though in this case as well, chargeback can be raised by marking the transaction disputed, but i highly doubt Airtel will do that.

It happened once to me. I raised a complaint with the UPI as well as my own bank. But I got a call back after 2 weeks from the person, since he was a banker himself, he inquired as if why i sent him the money and asked me to send him a mail stating that i sent it wrongly and he promptly returned back via NEFT. Since he was a government bank banker he could get hold of my mobile number i guess.

Hey, sure. This is a way to get out of this issue, I accidentally transferred 10000 to wrong upi address few days back, I put a complaint immediately through customer care of bank, they we raised a issue our team will work on it, still i went to bank next day and explain the issue and created dispute, they also said come back after 1 week backhand team will work on it. I asked whether my money will be back or not, they said it depends upon the receiver, once the money got credited it their only, then I said why I should be justified from both the end, if I am opposing for it then how can someone keep my money, they said yes we’ll try, still i was not satisfied, I contacted NPCI BHIM, through their website, then also I didn’t get any reply, no one was receiving helpline number also, I was so frustrated, then I used social media platform I contacted them through Facebook I Inboxed them, about the whole issue, they said it’s irreversible from their end they can’t help out, I got so angered, i just spoke out anger and said I will put this complaint on grivence redressal, if you people will not help then whose gonna help, then I got a reply that they can help me on by providing the receiver bank account name and account number, That would be of too help, then they provided me the same, next day I went to beneficiary bank, and explained my whole issue, after much requesting they gave me the receiver branch address and Contact Number, finally I talked to her, and explained the mistake done by me, She said she wasn’t aware of that she got her account credited, will get the passbook update and return me back my money. I know that might be just excuse, but she agreed to return the amount.

If UPI VPA contains mob no. as in case of phonepe try calling the person.

If Not, put a request there with message informing of wrong transactions.
May be, they approve the request.

Try these as of now.. in mean time others dimers will suggest other options if available

Just go to to the police station give Rs500 to constable they might try by threatening the reciever. U can even file the case legaly coz it is wrong to not to give the money to the owner.

To avoid such situations, I do a test transaction of Rs. 10/- before transferring huge amount. In this case, you should go to bank and file a complain. Once they receive the complain, they might be able to revert the transaction back.

While sending money via UPI you can see full name of person, haven’t you checked it before sending money?

There is a way you can get back your money. Please read through my story.

We all make mistakes in our life. Isn’t it ? However, while it’s having financial impact, then it hurts a lot. Let me describe one of such mistake which has direct financial impact on us.
Now a days UPI is a very common mode of transaction to transfer money from one account to another account. Every bank asks its customer to set an UPI id (like account number and unique) and using the same you can transfer money from one account to another account who is holding another UPI ID on real time. However, what happens, in case by mistake you put a wrong recipient ID and transfer the money and you don’t know the recipient🤦🏻‍♂🙈

For e.g you intend to send money to abc123@dbs account and by mistake you send it to abc1234@dbs and a recipient exists with UPI id abc1234@dbs

Is there any way that you can get back your money? I will discuss it today from my real life experience.

Last month while travelling, from my mobile banking I was wrongly sent Rs.65000/- to xyz@dbs instead of xyz123@dbs and unfortunately, xyz@dbs and xyz123@dbs has the same name, and money transferred immediately to wrong recipient (xyz@dbs).

First few minutes I was totally clueless what to do, however, first made my call to HDFC (from where I have transferred the money) and their call center executive told me directly that there is no way to get back it. After getting such an disappointing answer, I search on Google and didn’t get any proper way what to do. Some of the suggestions were like that re-send Re.1 and request the wrong recipient to return it. I did it, however no answer. I was really clueless what to do next?
Being in banking profession for last 3 years, I know that you can request the recipient bank to put a lien on the amount with proper proof.

So, next I called DBS customer care executive, and provide all details related to that wrong transaction and they confirmed that the money has been credited to wrong recipient x...bs. On my request the customer care executive put lien on the Rs. 65000/- amount which I sent incorrectly and requested me to raise a Chargeback with my bank. i.e HDFC.
To explain the Lien, it’s a legal right of the owner to hold on the amount until the charges get clear. In simple word the recipient will not able to withdraw the money until the dispute gets cleared.

The next step was to request my bank (HDFC) to raise a Chargeback against it. Chargeback is the process through which your bank requests to recipient’s bank to refund the amount.

The TAT for chargeback is 35 days, so the next 35 days you have to idle, and most irritating part you will get only one answer from bank executive that the TAT is 35 days so please wait, we can’t able to provide any information apart from this.

Once the chargeback is processed successfully, the recipient bank (DBS in my case) will contact the recipient and asked for Debit concern of the amount and once the recipient provides the same, the money will be refunded to your bank account and it will be credited to your account.

However, there are lot of challenges.

1) if the mobile number of the recipient is not updated, what to do? The answer is you can’t do anything and without a debit concern from the recipient, the bank can’t able to debit the amount. In my case the recipient was not contactable, however, bank (DBS) tried to find out other contact details of the customer and fortunately they were able to contact in another number and got debit concern.

In case the customer is not at all contactable, then bank will reject your Chargeback request, giving the same reason, and your chargeback request will be rejected . Once it gets rejected, you have to write a mail (to the following mail ids) to RBI Ombudsman and there is a panel under RBI Ombudsman who looks after Digital Transaction Disputes. After your request, they will check it and if they find that your claim is true, and the recipient is not at all contactable, then RBI Ombudsman will take measure accordingly and there is high possibilities that you will get your money back. However, it will take considerable time.

2) If the recipient deny to provide a Debit concern on the amount (highly unlikely) by claiming it’s his money, then also your chargeback request will be rejected. In this case you have to first lodge an FIR against the recipient for fraud case and then contact a Lawyer with all your proof. And the process will be handled lawfully then which involves money and time.
However, these are two process you have to follow when such incident happens. But it’s always preferable to check recipient’s UPI id 10 times before you process any transaction or better to use NEFT or IMPS to send money. Atleast it’s much safer bet than UPI ID.

However, at the end of the day we are human beings and make mistakes. Hope my experience and explanation atleast will help how to go ahead in case you do such kind of mistake in future.
Our banking system is well designed and there is resolution of every mistakes. However, the problem is that most of us are unaware about the process and same you will not able to know from banking personnel (as the HDFC customer and my dedicated HDFC RM told me that there is no process to get back your money once you transfer money using UPI ID).

Always write mails or Tweet banking care services, which is much faster rather calling customer care executives and always documented everything.

In banking system, first write mail (I am providing example of HDFC) to Supports ([email protected]), if you don’t get correct or satisfied or timely reply, write to grievance cell ([email protected]). In case you don’t get satisfactory timely response, write to Nodal Officer ([email protected]). Please check correct mail id from net as per your bank and region.

If all fails, write to RBI ombudsman. I am sure you will get correct resolution.

Useful and important tip: Guys Please use official BHIM app for making large amount upi transactions. It has an option to “Verify the UPI address” with this you can verify the name of the account holder. https://cdn0.desidime.com/attachments/photos/643384/medium/Screenshot_2020-10-14-11-02-17-973_in.org.npci.upiapp.jpg?1602653670
