Let have discussion on RO and bottle drinking water health concerns
And most important: do not buy RO if water TDS is below 500ppm in your area, normal UV/UF filter with addition of carbon and sediment filter is sufficient
must read:
http://www.bestnewsreader.com/who-mumbai-resear...
Scientific testing and the best “unbiased” brains in the world have repeatedly demonstrated that long term consumption of demineralized (RO) water is bad for your health.

I speed read the whole thing and what I learned is the demineralisation leads to deficiency of minerals? Then it’s not a problem for who eats healthy? And what about the places where the water contains high amount of a particular mineral? Where I live the water has high amount of iron. Which again on daily consumption might lead to other health problems like liver damage.

how you came to know about high iron?
then RO is only solution, but with some very good mineral cartridge like biocera

making my bank balance increase by 3000INR might help (you to get this).
that way i can finally stage a 445 [or 378 or 403] at my folks place who refuse to let go of the old Eureka Forbes AG – Classic model

candles differ at times, unit is similar → https://cdn0.desidime.com/attachments/photos/270091/medium/3420862Aquaguard-Classic-Water-Purifier-with-carbon-filter-in-working-condition-ak_L324361704-1462601269.jpeg?1480965399https://cdn0.desidime.com/attachments/photos/270096/medium/3420862Aquaguard-Standard-Water-purifier-Original-ak_L1143511444-1449467700.jpeg?1480965403

so much so that now they took a bulk 2 or 3 year AMC on some unit and eventually when the toggle switch / logic control-panel on this decade plus old unit failed for the third-forth time,
they now have a new PCB (which is not as robust or lasting as the original), new UV lamp, even an exterior chamber (of the UV lamp side) is new.

so for 3-4000rs (dunno exact bulk-AMC price there), a nearly two decades old junk that still works, has got EVERY working part replaced with a new one in the past year.(and the residual contract too stands valid).
[now only the candle housing, two thirds of the main body exterior is old. rest all is new!! https://cdn3.desidime.com/assets/textile-editor/icon_sad.gif and God forbid we might use it for another decade.]

Basically OP is referring to the age old process of alum or this candle type sediment separation, plus
ionised charcoal/carbon to remove some of the microbial stuff PLUS a stun gun UV https://cdn2.desidime.com/assets/textile-editor/icon_toungueout.gif that lets all their dead bodies remain in the water.
[have seen a 6-7000 litre tank oncce at a railway station, marked ‘activated charcoal’. it is the most commonly used economic way.]

Pros
Cost effective in certain set-up
running costs or after market spares availability is ample
better for use with potable water (water which has passed through some sort of purification process for supply to human food source)

Issues
>> It is NOT a fail-safe (Eureka Frbes marketing guy himself told us back in 2003-4 when he took few sessions for our course)
>> The candle/membrane type filtration is not supposed to or capable of removing ‘dissolved’ matter.
>> upkeep can be cumbersome, in the sense that any treated/ionised silver oxide or carbon will loose the ionisation over time.. and its hell difficult to know if N litres water has passed over it while in use
>> PSI/ input water pressure to the unit has to be at a certain level. so if in a multi-storied structure and very close to the O.H.T. then one needs to ensure that water pressure does not drop too much (or if on lower floors, then reduce psi)

>> does not remove odour or heavy metals normally (despite the faff and Hema Malini adverts even reverse osmosis as a technology, by itself can not remove heavy metals)

that B.A.R.C. technology is a middle ground (marketed by various manufactures) → some crooked suspended bloke spoke on it over Parth’s post earlier → http://www.desidime.com/forums/dost-and-dimes/t...

to me at-least, what the OP says isn’t news → http://www.desidime.com/forums/hot-deals-online...
speaking of news, i think now Farhan Malini, Hema Tendulkar, Sachin Akhtar are all launching or have the |believe-it| ‘re-mineralisation’ add-on’s to the RO base units.

the sad or the worst part is.. unlike in thrifty’s case, not everybody has access to professional study data
or are even aware of the need for the same.

also, in my gyaan post (second link) .. do read the part where we do the bigger phak-up of drilling only till 30-40 (at most) and thinking we saved the per foot running cost.
whereas in reality all sensible studies say that it could/should go till the bed rock.
so if you are in the vicinity of commercial crops or 15-20km of industries or in concrete jungle.. that sub-soil water anyway is toxic poison even 20-30 feet.
.
.
.
with RO the most critical is the replacement of the single most important component : the barrier membrane at the right times

incidentally, my Uncle’s place/ small town … all their life they drank normal municipal supplied main lines and are still okay okay
i too grew up drinking old fashioned candle filter and off late these UV etcetera..

no calcination ill effects yet. dunno about lead mercury venus saturn.

even now, the source water is subsoil and just UV 3-stage filter. (although in summer heat, the tanker wallahs might well be supplying nullah water.. for all we know)
I still live (and write 500-1000 word essays.. no loss of output).

unbiased and modern studies/‘testing’ in the same breathe sound .. well i was going to say hilarious or unbelievable ..
but i shouldn’t !

just wish for people to know that taking (according to a study) things with a pinch of salt helps.

most of the times the investigator or study group OR their sponsor’s personal interests or biases do creep in into the results.
[sometimes to the extent of discarding results repeatedly till a favourable result shows up upon repetition of tests. mainstay of new drug research an pharma trials https://cdn3.desidime.com/assets/textile-editor/icon_sad.gif where the researchers/research organisation is funded by the company. on paper, it remains ‘independent study’ by so and so, but if the costs are borne/funded for by a P&G or Colgate or Unilever.. ..then is it ¿ever? “independent” !]

also, W.H.O, too has its own limitations and isn’t sacrosanct. they too have people from lobby groups or vested interests infiltrate them.
some of their studies for a totally different set-up (say, sub-Saharan Africa) are vaguely interpolated for implementation in South Asia (Bangladesh, Pakistan, India) .. sometimes on experimental basis without doing the exhaustive study/research needed for our typical conditions..

.
.
.
also their initial dilly-dally and then topsy-turvy on C8 exposure (PFOA) and the prolonged evasiveness to classify electrosmog generated by cell-sites (mobile towers)/phones as carcinogenic ..
reeks of corporate or political lobbying having broken into the system. http://www.desidime.com/forums/dost-and-dimes/t...

thank you so much for taking the time and making the effort to start this awareness and safety thread and committing to keep it updated friend.

small token of appreciation as rep. points, although your intent (to help people help themselves) far FAR outweighs any such karma etcetera.

@hogbus sorry for not keeping up on the earlier conversation → http://www.desidime.com/forums/hot-deals-online...
either in private or in chats thread and things dwindled to the background.

but i am sure that @luckjiy’s endeavour here and the follow-on traction will make it worthwhile to have this (topic) bookmarked !

We are all guinea pigs in the white man’s laboratory! https://cdn3.desidime.com/assets/textile-editor/icon_sad.gif

This fcuking pollution is a direct result of our economic policy which is nothing but our leaders doing p!mp work for the white ba$tards. We are all being cheated with the gimmicks of growth and development. Air is not breathable, water is not drinkable and food is not eatable. And they call it development. Now, Modi ji is carrying this torch, which will scorch us to death, all around the world.
MAKE IN INDIA = FCUK US INDIANS! https://cdn3.desidime.com/assets/textile-editor/icon_twisted.gif

Note: We should also not forget the great economist Dr. Manmohan ‘Silent’ Singh who initiated this economic “boom” which will be the cause of our “doom”. https://cdn2.desidime.com/assets/textile-editor/icon_evil.gif
