Hi, Dimers. I really need your honest views on this one.

I have a job offer which will pay me 50000/month in hand in Mumbai. Is that enough for a couple to live in Mumbai not lavishly but decently?

Looking forward to your replies. https://cdn2.desidime.com/assets/textile-editor/icon_smile.gif

PS: I am saying decently and I guess we all know what that means in general. We can carry the conversation forward as replies come in.

@batman Imho it should be enough…. but there are things which needs to be taken into consideration like where in mumbai you wanna reside? And you gonna stay in your own house or on rent?
If on rent then South Mumbai is not going to be an option for sure…

Firstly thanks for getting back asap. Of course on rent or why I would be asking. https://cdn2.desidime.com/assets/textile-editor/icon_smile.gif I am not dead set on south Mumbai but it also shouldn’t be third-class area.

50k + accommodation is ok for young couples without any backlog of liabilities or medical/education exp.

Even if some1 thinks to live far away from south Mumbai, min 20k is requited for Housing /society/transport etc.

So, overall 50k is manageable but not decent, besides that if u r working in knowledge economy , u have all options to change the job later..
Or your wife may also take up a job..

Best wishes ..

@batman
Anyway, 50k is enf. For a senior citizen couple like yours, u can manage few drinks in dance bar too.

Batman(retired) since u will be working in south Bombay u will have to consider a few things . How cool are u travelling 1 to 1.5 hrs one side to work and that too in local trains . If u are not comfortable then it will be little difficult to find a good accommodation at cheap rates nearby ur workplace . Locals have good connectivity with south Bombay so u won’t need to worry much apart from getting used to the fast paced life and local rush in peak hours . Western suburbs ( kandivali , goregaon , borivali even part of dahisar ) can fetch u good accommodation at reasonable rates for 1bhk or 1rk depending on your requirement . Connectivity from station to ur home should not be a major concern but there are certain routes where connectivity is just fabulous . I don’t have good knowledge about central line , but mulund , ghatkopar , Thane and bhandup are good options on central line . Considering ur better half would cook herself expect the veggies to be costlier than a second tier city . I hope u have furniture and household stuff which u are going to relocate or else you won’t be saving much . Hope I haven’t skipped many points .

PS : tend to save maximum rather than splurging with limited salary since it help ur future a lot .

Ps2 : if u still don’t find these options viable moving to vasai /nalasopra and virar side is another option for cheap accommodation but then again it’s not the best of Mumbai

Answer 1: Yes, and NO .

Query 1: i do not know how to interpret ‘decently’. (specific to your case)

Thought 1:

Considering there are many loose ends and your main post was, is (and even the subsequent ones are) pretty vague,
I do not think the pointers/questions like the ones put by @myliferockkss or @B@R_0_0_D were out of place.

we can in no way be sure that you might be shifting to self/relative owned (and thus, sort of free) accommodation.

Thought 2:

decent and happiness are very relative terms w.r.t. Bombay.
There is this gutter/creek over-bridge that the local M.R.T (mass rapid transport/ railway) line uses in Bandra,
and the effluents stink probably worse than the nether regions of someone severely infected by syphilis

BUT
I myself have witnessed kids happily take a dip in the nearby waters or play around it.

on the otherhand,
have known hardcore super HNI’s
renting out their multiple upmarket properties which fetch them for over half a million rupees per month
and yet they themselves prefer to continue living in the community housing gheto’s commonly referred to as ‘chawls’
With children all married or settled within or outside India, they can move in to a ground level self owned acco. (bungalow) in a locality of their choice and yet they are happy staying in a Dadar or Charni Rd (i forgot exact location) chawl .

so, decent and happiness are really VERY subjective terms

thought 0

so https://cdn3.desidime.com/assets/textile-editor/icon_sad.gif just like in the 2004 movie The Village, for everyone talking of Bombay..
New Bombay does NOT exist or must not be spoken of ?

why ? https://cdn2.desidime.com/assets/textile-editor/icon_cry.gif arrgh https://cdn1.desidime.com/assets/textile-editor/icon_confused.gif ? why ?

Batman, you’d have to seriously take a cue from what @Baroooood hinted upon
and decide on your own financial and other goals or planning, versus your lifestyle/nature.

If there is a need to build a corpus for requirement few years hence and if you are not disposed to a heavily outgoing lifestyle or vice/habit.
then one can moderately save even in 50000, while still living a decent family, social life; albeit with the compromises that any urban life comes with.
and specifically the kind @MLRsss or @PaytmKePoojari ji mentioned w.r.t. Bombay.

In Bombay; time is money principal is very central to everything.

you can save time, but it might cost you money.
you can save money, but it might cost you time.
you can add ‘comfort’ in some similar equation

if travel by M.R.T/locals, you save time. loose comfort.
you avoid going to the big fresh veggie market/mandi and buy next doors, you save time: but not necessarily costs.

if Barood’s ballpark figure of 20000 on cost of living be taken as a reference point, then you need to build around whether you have dependents like children, parents or other contingencies to factor in. He already mentioned liabilities.

I know it for a fact that we (me and my relative/ bachelors) paid handsomely to stay in a match box sized chawl acco. in Charni Road (the oh so elite SoBo) even 12 years back.

so if you want to cut down on commute time (if workplace is within 0 to 7-8 kilometres of Churchgate /VT) to under 30 minutes, then that cost of living number (Barood bhai wala) can go up even 1.5x – 1.9x

also, any outing for a mere movie or decent dinner get together can set you off by minimum https://cdn2.desidime.com/assets/textile-editor/icon_toungueout.gif 500-1000 per person.
so those lifestyle factors, you’d know better. ( dawa daru ka kharcha, if any)

New Bombay

any place further North from and starting with Chembur is treated as Navi Mumbai.
Chembur is a peaceful, semi-upmarket locality but has less high-rises and tries to preserve the old-world feel.

like Dadar or other places mentioned by PaytmKePoojari ji , Chember has excellent connectivity and easy accessibility for most of the burbs and SoBo areas.
Mainly because it is also close to the Wadala Port Road and the Free way.

if you get your own vehicle or use private hired one to travel from Vashi, Chembur to even Southern most business districts like Nariman Point, Ballard Pier.. it might still be possible to do so in 35-40 minutes on an average day by car: from these two places in Navi Mumbai.

Rentals for an average structure (not too old) and living space of under 700-800 square feet can still be managed in 15-18000 IMO.
[my close family’s property of similar nature in Nerul, currently fetches around the same]

Do note that rentals in Bombay suburbs are inversely proportional to their distance from the nearest local train station or the metro station. [loop back to my earlier point of ‘time is money’.]

OVERALL,

most under 30s or under 40s urban educated couples with white collared jobs in Bombay are DINKs or HDHE,
but even otherwise, if you are okay stay around extremities away from the core SoBO areas, even in a gross/net 50000INR situation,
an average saving of up to 20-25% of that IS POSSIBLE .

Wish you happier innings, immaterial of the outcome of this decision making process. https://cdn1.desidime.com/assets/textile-editor/icon_smile.gif

DINK: Double Income No Kids
HDHE: Hum Dou, Hamara Ek

what kind of gentry in the building or the locality in general can one expect (if in the <20 k budget) ??

this is a genuine question please. (have got acquaintances in Dockyard or Mumbai Central area, and they give out mixed feelings).

also, xBHK is and can be full of surprises. Can you please give an approximation of the useable space (carpet) for an acco. in a non-gheto area with good municipal water/electricity back-up and under 18-20000 ?

nope https://cdn1.desidime.com/assets/textile-editor/icon_smile.gif ! not really. though i myself suffer the perils of overthinking through even the simplest of decisions,
i also believe, that
If you fail to plan, you plan to fail [not you as in ‘you’.

and that too for a decision pertaining to big bad Wolf of a city like..

but one BIG ‘small’ word is ‘budgeting’ and another term is ‘self control’.
Bombay is all about that.

and as many Dimers too will vouch for, ‘budgeting’ sounds so simple in principle.. but goes out of the window in practice.
coupled with this loan. that loan (unavoidable and fixed monthly exxpenses) or a carefree spending habit, can and has landed people in a mess (stress).

My own cousins (a cousin brother many years back and another, a sister in 2014-2015) had to keep mulling over the decision;

whether to have a baby or whether to have their own home (EMI/Loans)

sorry for being blunt.
If you come from a better socio-economic background or were far removed from the culture of this city (like if you are the sadly stereotyped Deliwallah or Kolkattawallah or Chennai wallah or Timbuktuwallah) then it is best avoided to stay in a stressful locality or gheto-type areas, especially if you are a progressive minded couple

in that sense, areas like Kharghar or Belapur or Chembur (costly) or Vashi/Nerul might have similar educated younger gentry with advantage of staying in a proper planned city (infrastructure wise).

New Bombay is better planned and some areas are much less crowded with easy access to all needs and amenities (medical facilities, educational needs, parks/recreation areas, malls/cinema halls, shopping and daily needs, transportation and water/electricity).

Disclaimer: Snooty Bandra’ites or Borivali/Andherians (patent pending on this adj.) and almost everyone else from THE western line may treat you (oh you are from harbour line) the same way as Dr. B.R. Ambedkar and his family were treated by the elite in his growing up years.
