@hankar.tad805 Are these rates fixed throughout the subscriber base irrespective of service provider? confused

Link Copied

Yes. And carrier charges are extra because these are the rates your cable operators and DTH providers have to give the channel owners. Channel owners are going to be very rich now.

What is the implication? The DTH monthly subscription prices will be going up?

Yes, because Chennai court stupidly went against TRAI rules.

After 29 Dec, all dth plans are going to change and we only need to pay for the channels we want to watch, but there is another announcement awaiting from trai for minimum charges for new monthly plan.

what TRAI expected -

consumer should pay only for channels they watch so that no extra burden on them for unnecessary channels

but because of no proper clarity/planning by TRAI what can happen (hope you remember what restaurant did when GST was reduced they hiked price of all items) -

per channel price of popular channels of these companies will be higher than actual cost
they will lure consumers to subscribe combo pack of same company by providing more channels at low cost
consumers don’t watch only star network channels or zee netowrk so they will end up with subscription from all these companies

also popular channel prices are like 15-20rs and in a family everyone have his own favorite channel so 100-200rs only for 10-15 channels laughing

that’s the mess and dth providers may add some more mess from their side

Combo packs was the thing TRAI wanted to discard of because of so many junk channels taking up space. Chennai court order made its rules toothless and so TRAI have filed a case in Supreme Court.

The price would be high as all popular channels are priced at 19 and DTH charges + tax will be applicable. Glad I disconnected my DTH and am now atching all my shows online grinning

@Mirror If DTH providers follow same route as restaurants, then it will be customers loss. But then TRAI can be pressurised by media and people regarding price hikes. Also, we don’t know what JIO is planning regardless they also have to follow these rules. Lets wait and watch blush

Sala income me koi updation nahi, but these morons keep it up-to-date so that your expenditure keeps increasing. I was okay for paying like 200 rupees for my mother’s 14 or so Bengali channels.

for only 14 channels you still will pay almost same amount even if these 14 are popular channels.

Yes, ideally. But TRAI will not approve free fta . Out of 100 fta channels, 25-30 are dd channels which are owned by govt and when everyone pays 130 rs, then they are going to make huge money out of this.

STAR Network is first to reveal the channel packs.

For example, a consumer has opted for Star’s Hindi Value pack with an MRP of Rs 49 through the service provider.
The service provider has declared a Network Capacity Fee of Rs 130 for a combination of 100 FTA and Pay Channels.
In this instance, the consumer’s bill shall be calculated as Rs 130 + Rs 49 = Rs 179

Rs 49 Hindi Pack: 12 Channels
Plus,Bharat,Utsav, Gold, Movies OK,Utsav Movies,Star Sports First/1/2/3.

If broadcasters continue to play with consumers and if supreme court doesn’t help then there can be two options for consumers to beat the high pricing.

1. Select channels on A la carte basis. Make changes per month according to your liking, taste and season. You can select channels even for the minimum ₹130.

2. Disconnect DTH and completely move online. Many of my friends have already done it. There are ways to watch more than 500 channels on Amazon firestick using Jio TV app.

All Local cable/tv providers may don’t have enough idea of all this. After 29 Dec there may be big chaos mainly in rural areas.

@hankar.tad805
I think you’re getting overly distraught about what is going to happen. I think in some places your interpretation is incorrect too. I suggest you read the remaining portion of the thread on DreamDTH.

Also, why is everyone grumbling about the Madras High Court order?
I thought there was a split verdict. Then the Supreme Court referred the case back again and a third judge mostly sided with the verdict of the Chief Justice of the High Court (except for the forcible cap on the discount in the bouquet which means the broadcaster could offer the bouquet at a lower price as per the HC judgement).
Which means the Madras high court ruling allows the broadcaster to provide the bouquet at a very high discount
(so this is a pro consumer move because no one anywhere is talking about reducing the per channel MRP)
https://economictimes.indiatimes.com/industry/t...
So why exactly are people blaming the HC judgement and hoping that the TRAI petition succeeds? Would love to hear your views on that after you read the link I specified.

EDIT
Does TRAI seriously think that if its petition succeeds, and the broadcaster offers a 25 channel bouquet at Rs 85 then the broadcaster is going to price the individual channels in the bouquet so that their combined MRP is Rs 100 (so roughly Rs 4 per channel). I doubt that will ever happen. Instead the bouquet price will increase as a consequence of the order

I was totally wrong about madras Court. Thanks for mentioning the article. Madras Court is indeed in favour of consumer and they want people to get channels at maximum discounted price. Even some brodcasters have offered 35-50 % discount. TRAI has done good thing by retaining à la carte packs .But they want brodcasters not allowing more than 15 % discount.
If it gets approved in court then as you said, brodcasters may have to increase the bonquets price…no other option.
Also, I read some threads on Dream DTH.
Some are claiming that Tata Sky is coming up with min plan of 150 rs including tax.
In rural area, at 150 price people get to watch around 300-350 channels on local cable/dth.
In this case, people will have to pay even more, I guess aroud 300 rs to watch good channels.
TRAI wants every consumer to pay equally, they want full transparency in taxes but this will be expensive for lower middle class people.
Hence I personally think it’s still not good idea to pay compulsary for fta channels.

I am pretty certain the reporter is indulging in fearmongering
Would someone please provide me with a valid (as in an official link like a TRAI order, gazette notification, etc) where is says it is mandatory to take the FTA channels?
As far as I can judge, all that the TRAI has said is that if you want to avail just the FTA channels you cannot be charged more than 130 rupees

EDIT:
https://economictimes.indiatimes.com/industry/m...
The important points are:
“As per the new tariff order, broadcasters will now have to declare the maximum retail price (MRP) and nature of all the channels within 60 days.”
“The distribution platform operators will have to declare network capacity fee and distribution retail price (DRP)within 180 days.”

The broadcasters have declared their rates
Now we wait for the service providers (DishTV, TataSky, etc) to declare theirs (before December 29)

I’m assuming you are referring to these words
“The service provider has declared a Network Capacity Fee of Rs 130 for a combination of 100 FTA and Pay Channels”
That is a simple illustration with an assumption. Please provide me the link where a service provider has actually specified they are going to charge a Network Capacity fee of Rs 130 (or whatever other amount different from 130)
