Millions of mobile phones, thousands of appliances pile up for repairing amidst lockdown
More than 5 million mobile phones, 70,000 refrigerators and 50,000-plus television sets have piled up for repair and servicing in India during the first phase of the lockdown. There are another more than 30,000 microwave ovens, AC and washing machines which needs repair at a time when Indians are locked indoors and doing household chores themselves due to the lockdown. smartphones are one of the most essential items, after food and groceries. It helps enforce social distancing by helping people connect without having to go out and this is something that cannot be overlooked. The Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade has suggested to the ministry of home affairs that individuals, small agencies or online entities involved in providing repair services for mobile phones, refrigerators, ACs and televisions should be allowed to function to “help the citizens under lockdown to avail these critical services" and provide some income opportunities.
