earlier, i used to get sms even without any active validity pack,when did this happen? 
same problem faced by me also…i think this happened after the new plans were implemented…earlier around 7-15 days of time was given…but now from the next day whole service will stop if not recharged
When 23 plan expires then airtel gives 7 days grace period in which both incoming and outgoing will work.
Then after that they will again extend for 6 to 7 days in which only incoming will work.
After this you can recharge with min 23
sometimes it works without 23 rs pack sometimes its necessary ,
i dont have recharged my sim with any pack but i still get all otp for transactions from hdfc bank
still no USSD to recharge voda and airtel
No. Vodafone started showing this option on *111# itself. You can do every recharge 49, 219, 399 etc etc…,

Yes surely (for 2 days). 
Airtel has downgraded its facility. I couldn't recharge my number since a month and now Airtel has stopped incoming messages too....its very disregarding. I am porting to Jio...atleast Jio provides incoming messages even if I do not recharge for months.
We already paid SMS charges/mobile banking charges to the respective bank (you can check in bank account statement). Airtel or any other cellular companies have no rights to block the bank msgs……. we should file the complaint against airtel on consumer court… https://www.onlinelegalindia.com/services/consu...
my airtel unlimited pack of 149 is finished…..now I want to port my airtel number to another company, to get a porting code i have to send msg to 1900 of cost one rupee. only for this now I want to recharge again with 149 rs. and after porting my number hole amount will be waste……….
If you still have sufficient talktime for sending PORT SMS just recharge with Rs 45/48 pack. Otherwise Rs 49 pack which gives 38 TT.
Edit: You can also recharge the no. by using main balance from another Airtel no. Dial 141 Airtel mobile number * MRP# . You can choose the MRP from 48, 49, 149, 219, 249, 399, 598

I got the same problem with my Airte.l I did not recharge it for one month and Airtel has just decided to discontinue any incoming call or sms. it's my bank number and I was not getting a single bank sms or otp. today I decided to port from Airtel to jio. it took hardly 10 minutes and you know what happened after that. airtel called me and tried to bribe me to cancel the port. I didn't knew Airtel would be such a cheap skate company. I also have jio and it would go for months without recharge.
