Interesting fact

Paytm currently has 40,000 sellers in India, of which only 10,000 transact on a monthly basis. But the company expects to have 1,00,000 Chinese sellers right at the launch.

Chinese invasion started thru Paytm. https://cdn3.desidime.com/assets/textile-editor/icon_lol.gif

Their target is to expand to a million sellers by the end of this year! Now we know how they wish to accomplish this.

@ silent tags: is this what sharing of APIs is? (i am not a software person or know what exactly API is or does. But have known IRCTC (or Infibeam in old days) to mirror basic content from other sites. (most sites acko. by saying: powered by so and so)

While working on thisbookshop.com, our CEO back then put me in the team tasked to do requirement gathering and interfacing with a couple of other places. I didnt understand much, but in one meeting with landmarkonthenet i understood that somehow site will remains ours (TBS) for a buyer to place the order, but content will basically come from Landmark. And later we’ll split the logistic, revenue etcetera.)

so is this to paytm, what GEB is to ebay?

in so far as local (Indian) levies and clearances is concerned?

But unlike GEB, in this case there would be lot more instances of direct counterfeits or patent violation products too getting listed. So will a resident Indian (whichever citizenship) buyer be directly prosecuted for any violation ? (hypothetically speaking, say if someone orders some equipment or personal items the use of which isn’t allowed. Not just accessories for carnal pleasures, i am talking about stuff like jammers or surveillance equipment.)

I have always been curious about how the Marans or betting mafia are said to operate private telephone exchanges. Some of those things can easily be bought off the Internet I found out. Even parts to make ones own SatNav.

Ever since Alibaba came on-board, they’ve helped One97 grow by retaining quality vendors and clients; and increase a reliable database of customers by making them pay through cards/banks or luring them into KYC (to upgrade the site credits limit).

Both add to create a trophy database of ‘real’ customers and the projections of growth helps get the next round of funding.

@chopchop Yes, you are somewhat correct in the sense that there will definitely be an API-based integration between Paytm and AliExpress to make this happen. But the complexity of this integration extends far beyond a mere integration of their software systems. Think about all the customs, cross-border taxation, legal, and logistics issues they will have to overcome to make this possible. Hats off to their ambition!

On the flip side, this will definitely lead to more customer woes. Paytm is already ill-equipped to handle customer issues for their existing transaction volume. I would not even want to shop with them when their transactions and, consequently, their support requests double or triple.

They are operating like a dorm-room startup even when their revenues have hit billions. They need to focus on improving their customer service and their existing platform before trying to grow this wild!

Effing VCs are messing up all of the standard business practices and only care about revenue/transaction-volume.

Ah got some idea thanks @DealSeeker ..
Ambition is ambition, yes hatts off.
And i was purely talking about these API etc only when i asked techies here (last month interacted with some people who again were talking of the term and i was just a blank participant).

Like i asked about GEB versus this. The non software thing will have the usual surprises and hurdles. I think even ebay GEB orders require one to pay additional upfront BEFORE the item is handed over [if levies were paid over and above the contracted rate (order value) ].

It may seem overwhelming, but once things start rolling its day to day thing. Speaking from second hand exposure (a close relative handles major clients of UltraTech cements in India and also some regional exports. And a friend worked with Reliance Petro’s Middle East and Pacific exports division. They practically were on calls 24 × 7. Trucks loading, despatch, odd problem at containerization stage late night call from staff at Mundhra Port]

point is, a good team and ambitious employees.. coupled with favourable system (laws, local govt.) can make it happen.

Effing VCs.. thats a whole different game. Nobody today wants to, or can invest time like a Tata Steel or (Birla) Century to steadily grow organically for 30 40 years. After Sabeer Bhatia cashed out of Hotmail, i was momentarily in awe. But now everyone is a ‘chatur Cheetah’. Quickly go in for the kill, before you burn out. Eat till you are stuffed, then cash out and go for the next kill.
Instant Gratification.

In simple terms, it’s kind of an understanding between two entities (person or business or system).

If System A provides certain information to System B , System B will perform an action.

A good example that i came across:

  1. Food items = API
  2. Making an order = Providing an information
  3. Serving you food = Performing an action

geez thanks Ajay, this was simpler to decipher for a relative dunce person.
so in layman terms its not all that out of the world’ish, but more about both (systems/ people/ or whoever is in between) parties understanding each other and speaking (relaying and feedback) in such a way that the other can take measured action over it.

@Ajay do give it a serious thought:

This is what I predicted a while back. Paytm is just another Shopclues in the making. And,silently have been wishing the same because of their unethical business practices. I know the doom is near for Paytm. How long can a company run of endorsements from VCs? That’s been their ONLY USP ever since they were born. Every investor wants their money to grow. Now, with chinese products in the mix this could be a ‘deadly’ combo. A synonym for China market. A blow to their already receding reputation. Another nail in the coffin is their depreciating goodwill. They never understand the basic principle that goodwill is an ‘asset’. Once gone it would be a irrevocable loss. Good going Paytm.

The way Paytm is doing business reminds me exactly what Warren Buffet warns companies NOT TO DO—Expand mercilessly when you are sitting on a pile of cash!
