I don’t know much about cars as I don’t drive. But, the onus of replacing old Tyres of car (i10 Grande) has fallen upon my shoulders. So, what should I remember and check so that I don’t look like a complete idiot to my driver and the ones at the tyre shop. Kindly suggest me -
1) Best tyre, brand, quality wise and affordable.
2) To dos list before and after purchase
3) Tricks to remember, if any, during shopping.
4) Best use for old Tyres, if any
5) Guesstimate for old Tyres resale value

All suggestions welcome, thank you for help.

1. Goodyear – VFM
2. Bridgestone – premium
You can save 2-3k if you buy online n fix(@localshop).
Not worth it, IMO, unless you enjoy DIY
Take it to showroom or famous tyre shop n get it done.
Google for online prices so you can bargain.
Alignment n balancing they would take care.
Old tyres too old drop them at puncture repair shop else try your luck on olx.

I thought Bridgestone too was VFM (good value even if paying higher)
any Patanjali or desi ‘Bharat Mata’ brands worth their bucks?

Go for Bridgestone – long life, safe driving during rains. i have recently bought 4 bridgestone for my honda car.
Buy only offline! not very high difference… and damages can be easily replaced if bought offline! Old tyres… gift them to your driver. https://cdn1.desidime.com/assets/textile-editor/icon_smile.gif

If you are not an avid driver and mostly drive around in city then just cut the fuss and go for the same brand of tyres that you car came with.

Ensure tyres are not too old, check for the manufacturing date
Ensure you get wheel balancing and alignment done.

If I am not wrong when you replace tyres that are completely worn out there won’t be any resale you can expect for them. Useless even for rethreading.

One good use is to get a good tyre cleaner, clean and polish the tyres and hang them on wall https://cdn1.desidime.com/assets/textile-editor/icon_biggrin.gif. Or stack them and warp them with rope to use as stools to sit on.

I got a set of Yokohama tyres of size 170/65 instead of 165/65 default sizes for my grand i10 few months ago. Got a great deal as the dealer said these have very less demand as very few vehicles sport that size. Found out online and was suggested that I can go for 170/65 too without too many issues but now that I have been using them I don’t really recommend this size. Few issues.
1. A bit drop in acceleration
2. A bit bumpy/shaky ride. Vehicle seems to absorb the unevenness of road a bit better but feels like it shakes more than before. May be because of increase in diameter of tyres.
I went ahead with the deal for brand Yokohama, which is definitely better, but the size of tyre was a wrong choice.

If I am not wrong Grand i10 mostly comes with 165/65 goodyear tyres so just get the same again.

2X3.25mm increase in diameter causing issues?
I guess it’s tires. Different make etc. Soon you will adjust.

Thank you everyone for suggestions and help. Replaced 4 tyres with MRF ZLX for 11,200 as we don’t travel by car much. So settled for it. Bridgestone was really too good, fancy but very costly – one tyre costing 4400/- Got nothing for Old Tyres. Thank you once again. Cheers!

@Plato

My wife owns the same car, a Hyundai Grand i10. I have taken it out for a spin few times and the stock Goodyear tyres are not that impressive. I would suggest you to upgrade to Michelin Xm2 or Yokohoma earth tyres. They offer far better grip and ride quality than the likes of Goodyear/ MRF/ JK etc. As someone rightly mentioned, ensure that you don’t pick up an old set of tyres. Try to get tyres which are manufactured in last 6 months or so. Regarding resale, don’t expect more than 300 to 400 rs for a set of worn out tires. BTW, what’s the current ODO reading of your car?

@raghupro

Grand i10 can comfortably take 185 section tyres too. I’m pretty sure the problem you are facing has nothing to do with tyre upsize. Please check if alignment and balancing was done properly. Also ensure that tyre pressure is not more than 33 PSI. Only issue i foresee while up-sizing Grand i10 to 185 section tires is drop in fuel efficiency and a stiffer steering. Acceleration difference would be marginal.
