Aired again after 33 Years, “Ramayan" has set a world record by becoming the highest viewed entertainment program globally. For the record, the final episode of “Game of Thrones" had shattered single-night viewing records, with 19.3 million tuning in to watch the finale in May, 2019.

DD National said on April 16, 77 million (7.7 crore) people across the globe watched the show.

"Rebroadcast of Ramayana on Doordarshan smashes viewership records worldwide, the show becomes most watched entertainment show in the world with 7.7 crore viewers on 16th of April," DD National posted on official Twitter handle.

i cant stop laughing at how Game of Thrones was THE big thing and THE media movement and THE buzz on the internet for the better part of a decade, yet the last season was so shit that as soon as it ended it’s impact and influence disappeared and it will not be remembered.

Ok..it is the Most viewed one but not appropriate to compare with GOT
GOT got aired on HBO globally (& other OTT platforms like HBO Now, HBO Go, Prime video…) and it is a paid channel unlike DD National which is a free channel & even available for those* with terrestrial antennas
Also the version of GOT telecasted on Star World is edited version (Why would anyone bother watching it?)
The only way to watch the uncut show here in India (same time as US) was via Hotstar Premium (How many from India had it?)
Also this is lockdown time.. everyone* is at home, so the probability of people watching anything heavily promoted is super high
Even average regional movies created All-time record in terms of TVR ( Premiere post lockdown announcement )

GOT is not available on youtube so ofc people who have not subscribed HBO paid service will not able able to watch it anywhere except illegal torrent download. If it was available on youtube then very few will bother to download. Its different for ramayan. Its freely available to watch on youtube, so why would anyone illegally download it via torrent.

I am the only one among my friends who didn’t even watch a single GOT episode. Maybe it’s because I was forced to watch some scenes for pure research purposes and to review products like https://cdn0.desidime.com/attachments/photos/615625/medium/6645567PJSbVV3.gif?1588586675

Well…I guess you need to do some more research.
I don’t know how people are still assuming that DD National is free.
1. Whenever I visited my remote village, nowhere can I see a single terrestrial antenna!
2. GOT is watched by mostly affluent people. If you think Indians are poor then by that logic you can conclude that lots of people are sharing TV screens. Accordingly, if you are comparing with GOT, multiply the number of viewers of Ramayana by 4-8x (since they can’t afford TV)!
3. Ramayana got aired second time and all of the videos are available on YouTube. Why would people bother to watch them on TV? GOT isn’t aired second time right?
4. Lockdown doesn’t mean people would watch anything. If they have any desire then only will they watch!

Comparing all the factors you can conclude yourself!

What are you even trying to prove here? smile
First you need to read the first line in my post // Comparisons is inappropriate //

1. Subjective*
People from your so called remote village doesn’t represent the entire country where terrestrial transmission is still working and the channel is Free
Guess…we need more research here?
Also according to DD
7cr people watched people ..they didn’t say only people from remote villages/Urban locations watched it or majority from either of them
And DD is a free channel on DTH platforms (YES_ It is free not a paid channel like Star Movies or Star Gold
+ It is also free via JioTV (LIVE)…the free service that’s been offered to 40* cr Jio subscribers

2. If*
Your logic is not* my logic… Being able to afford something and wanting to have the same thing via official sources is a completely different thing. It could also be related to the other premium content available from that XYZ OTT (Hotstar*)

3. If this got posted in political/section, I would’ve posted an appropriate reply for that. Don’t wanna get into religious debates here in D&D ( Again..not appropriate to compare fiction and XYZ belief system..)

The point is… comparing both TV shows and their rating is BS
Like some others before pointed out…DD should’ve never used the word “Globally” in their Twitter statement smile

I have seen a lot of foreigners watching Ramayana on YouTube during lockdown… Anyways you can judge globally from Wikipedia article:

Ramayan notably broke viewership for any Indian television series during that time. It was telecast in 55 countries and at a total viewership of 650 million and re-telecast (March 24 – april 18 2020) nearly 2500 million viewership alone in 25 days, it became the highest watched Indian television series by a distance, and one of top watched television series in world. 35 It entered in the Limca Book of Records as the most watched mythological series.2 On its first telecast (1987), it had 40 million viewership in India.

From 650 million viewership during 1987, only 40 million viewership was from India!

PS. Indian brainwashed Christians are fighting a lot on newspaper comments section so as to prove that Ramayan isn’t the most viewed series! 😛😛

Makes sense right?
On First telecast (that too in 1987 when there were limited TV sets in the country)..40 million is a lot
The subsequent telecasts happened in other countries over the time (55 Telecasts atleast { I suspect more } with an avg 1 crore views from each country via 78 episodes) so the majority of the telecasts could have happened in 90s or in 2000s or during 2010-2020…Our Indians are everywhere & ofcourse a certain percentage of viewership from overseas citizens
No info anywhere if these so called 2500 million viewership has any stake from overseas viewership this time (As far as I can see..these views are entirely linked to local viewership.. Thanks to Lockdown
+ Again not an appropriate comparison these are the numbers based on overall telecasts all over the world in comparison with a single and first telecast* (which the majority of the Indians didn’t get a chance to watch due to single source paid telecast via Hotstar)

And BTW..the “Global” reference from previous post is not exactly related to views at that time*…like I said there it’s more linked to people’s mindset (Reference mentioned over there*) and disagreement over the comparison with an XYZ show (the obvious one that comes to mind because of the keyword*) from international origin
