sender id spoofing is/has been made illegal or there are some tough laws now, so nobody in India does that i think.

you can still buy bulk messaging services that permit sender id to be a alpha numeric or name code.

like say: AD-Desidime or SR-ICICI and so on.

THAT way your ‘name’ might be seen in recipient ‘inbox’ .. as per your requirent.

There are a zillion sites online that can do sender id spoofing and have free trials too, but mostly paid services.

WhatsApp ate sms…. really …. vodafone gives me 1750 every month….. but every time wasted……

then @Barooood bhai often sent through/received texts from way2sms.com … or may be he only receives… like you said, after whatsapp came in his life, he too sends from that only.

i call it spoofing because sender id is sent as your number.
yes, i used to get free messages from Indian railways and my bank back then, because way2sms would take our yes to T&C and make the servers of IR or ICICI/HDGC believe that sender was XxXxXxXxXx. [pinging for PNR enquiry or bank account details]

now there are sites that send their own id and the phone number remain in the body of the message.

I will avoid giving out more information because you anyway are a very internet savvy person with access to search engines but more so to avoid giving mischief-mongers further directions.

most (if not all) technologies have a life cycle. it was good while it lasted, may be still is for certain needs or on some specific occasions.

speaking of ghodafone, i remember when i still was on Orange. (this was even before Hutchison.
over a decade back, the scene was very different, Reliance DAPO hadn’t trampled Tellco’s and charges were a King’s ransom.

I remember this particular time when some TRAI or court ruling capped roaming charges for data and sms both things.
by chance, I was not in home circle and i ended up using BATATA/IDEA network for GPRS and used my Orange account login on-site to send smses within India. and had to send some International texts manually from my handset as the Orange site had a fixed country code area as 91.

to my surprise

when the bill was generated (i’d pay for if needed, but always take itemised billing) all the National smses I sent from the website using my Orange account login were NOT charged to me, IDEA (BATATA) data in roaming too didn’t have much of a charge and to my chuckles: since TRAI ruling on SMS charges was a blanked one: even the international smses were only capped at Rs3 per sms of 160 characters.

@B@R_0_0_D bhai, you been a hardcore Bhoomi putra (Bombayite) since many years.. your take on the Golden era or whatever you call it.. up to now.. which been the most pleasant network/service to use in Bombay?

Orange used to be a charm sachhi ! :-/ miss it
BPL too survived well for its network was okay and customers were less.

after DAPO and RIL, things changed a lot. Aircel/tel Spice/MTS.
MTNL is the only other service i tried that closely and luckily most staff in New Bombay are receptive.

MTNL used to offer (and still offers I thinkl) a service where you can send SMS from website using your own number. But those were charged same as if sent from your mobile. Only advantage was ability to use the keyboard.
After RCDMA DAPO came, SMS became practically free. In the last few years, whatapp, LINE, Viber and a few others have come up. simultaneously TRAI had introduced the cap of 100 SMS per day. So SMS is not a very “hot” thing now.
