Suggestion for Phone - To be bought in USA by my friend for me

343°
Deal Captain
gambitrite

My friend is on a work visit to USA and i have asked him to get me a mobile. I have zeroed in on 3 options,

>iPhone – iPhone SE or iPhone 6s
OR
>Nexus phones – Nexus 5x or Nexus 6p (Recently they have got a price cut)
OR
>Dual Sim phones – Any good VFM dual sim phone cheaper than in India

Please tell me as to which is the best out of these as i have to consider unlocked version & lte bands supported by Indian Telecom carriers.
iPhone SE is $400 for 16gb & $500 for 64gb variant.

Recently Nexus devices got a price cut with Nexus 5x @ 270$, Nexus 6p 32gb @ 400$ and Nexus 6p 64gb @ 450$.
http://www.gsmarena.com/get_a_nexus_on_the_chea...

Also i would appreciate any suggestions for dual sim phones apart from Oneplus 3.
Can i order the phone via Amazon.com & give his hotel address? Nexus 5x Unlocked International Version is available for 270$ in Amazon.com in below link,

https://www.amazon.com/LG-Nexus-5X-Unlocked-Sma...

CC: @DealSeeker @getready @raghupro @rv2012 Please provide your opinions & suggestions.

Also i would like to know about international warranty on these phones. Will it be accepted in India?

No warranty for Mobiles purchased in US
I remember Apple providing 1 year international warranty before but now they stopped it seems

And Regarding Nexus devices,
Nexus 5x 16gb was available for 150$ a week or two back [If you dont mind limited storage, this is a very good option if you are looking for nexus devices]
Nexus 5x 32gb version should cost you anywhere around 250$

And Nexus 6p, best price till date is 399$, its not a good idea to purchase nexus devices right now because Prices will fall drastically starting from September

You can have a look at these devices

Blackberry priv for 299$
LG G Flex 2 for 150-200$

LG G5 for 350-400$

Bootloader unlock is different from carrier unlock
The answer to your question is “NO”

Verizon Phones are factory unlocked
Its very easy to get unlock codes for AT&T
T mobile, Virgin, Boost, Sprint, Metropcs, freedom pop its not that easy to get sim unlock code may be you have to spend some bucks on eBay to purchase unlock code

@gambitrite wouldn’t recommend an iPhone SE as the unlocked version seems to be lacking one of the Indian LTE bands. Also the price is relatively not much cheaper in US when compared to price on Paytm, maybe around 5k less at max. Do remember that if you purchase an iPhone from US you don’t have a valid warranty in India.

Coming to dual sim phones in general, they are much cheaper in India.

As far as nexus go, yes, these seem to be a decent deal. But do ensure that you really want them.

My bro flew down from US two weeks ago and even I was considering a cell phone but eventually seen that there wasn’t even a single good deal so backed out. The bes I found was a LG G5 for around $430 which is way cheaper than in India.

As far as Amazon.com shipping goes, yes, you can get it shipped to your friend’s hotel address too. I have done it several times.

Do make sure you check refurb deals on eBay US, there are some crazy good deals at times but you always have a risk dealing with Ebay refurb phones. I once got an iPhone 5 for dad from eBay and got a pretty screwed up device, I just had to sell it away at a huge loss back here in India.

If at all you are purchasing a locked phone then do refer to swiftunlocks dot com to verify if that phone can be unlocked or not and for what price.

The prices he is mentioning are without customs
on an average, to import a 500$ phone, customs are approx 10K (That may vary upon market price declared by customs)
So the samsung s7 he is mentioning for 400$ would cost around 35K after the customs
In this case if his friend is buying a phone from him then custom would not be applicable

@Randomactz All the prices discussed in this thread are without customs itself. I don’t find any deal for $400 for Galaxy S7 in US for US shipping either so just curious.

The only $400 deal ($420 to be precise) is on eBay US that too for a ATT branded unlocked device with few blemishes on the device and no headset.

The Galaxy S7 is retailing for around 45k in local market + 10% cash back with almost all major debit/credit cards. I would definitely recommend this over the ones we get in US for around $550 for a new one. The US version are mostly single sim and have no valid warranty in India.

Yeah… i too checked in slickdeals as well and i did not find any good deals for phones. I was interested to get either S7 or S6 Edge Plus at the prices mentioned by @getready but i am not able to find any as of now. As you said LG G5 is way cheaper compared to prices in India. Confused as i am not finding better deals… If you come across any deals, please provide me the links. My friend will be back by 10th Aug & i need the phone to be delivered to him before that day.

He can, that won’t be an issue unless he has too many electronics to carry. In Mumbai, Delhi and Hyderabad it is not too difficult to handle customs even if your friend is called for a random check. Just ask him to empty his wallet and ensure only around $20 to $30 is present and then if the customs guy catches him let him just handover whatever is there in his wallet and he would be let go.

I posted a deal for S7 Edge in local stores in India, do check it out. I got the phone for 48k after 10% credit card/debit card cash back + 0% EMI else 49.5k for direct cash transaction. This is way better than spending close to 44k to 47k including taxes on the same device in US that too without any valid Indian warranty.

Don’t go for S6 edge or S6 edge plus, both have terrible battery life and heating issue. I used a S6 edge personally, though I absolutely loved the device I had to sell it off a month later because of battery life and heating issue. My bro is using a S6 Edge Plus since december, seen my S7 Edge now and realised how better it is so he sold off his S6 Edge Plus and got a S7 edge yesterday night.

@gambitrite Your friend wont be paying the customs if he unbox the phone prior to boarding the flight.

All Apple products excluding iPhone have international warranty. Though if you have proper bill from the US, they might honor it but the chances are still slim. One of my friend bought the phone from US and it was replaced in India under warranty cause of the manufacturing defect. It all depends on the Apple store employee and the defect.

iPhone 6S and 6S+ are international 4G models which will work anywhere in the world. You don’t have to worry about the 4G bands.

Now for the phone model, here are few examples:

iPhone 6S Plus 64GB cost $849 in US factory unlocked which is around 57k.

iPhone 6S 64Gb cost $749 in US factory unlocked which is around 50k.

On Amazon it’s available for 57k. Now, you have to decide if you want to save 7k to get it from US or from India with warranty.
http://www.amazon.in/Apple-iPhone-6s-Gold-64GB/...

If you’re getting good discount on the iPhone, than you might consider it else I would suggest to skip it.

iPhone SE 64Gb factory unlocked cost $499 which is around 34k. The same model on Amazon.in is 45k. Saving 11k. Now, if you’re specially considering to get the SE model than the saving is somewhat good. Don’t buy SE just cause you’re saving more money, buy if you really want it.

Nexus 6P factory unlocked is available for $449 right now ($100 discount), which is around 30k.
http://www.bestbuy.com/site/huawei-google-nexus...

You can get the same from Amazon for 39k less any cashback offers. Saving? 7-8k. No idea if it’ll be covered in warranty.

Galaxy S7 32Gb factory unlocked is $620 which is around 42k.

Indian model with warranty 48,900 on flipkart. Saving still 6-7k.
http://www.flipkart.com/samsung-galaxy-s7-gold-...

I wouldn’t compare or check eBay.com because it’s PIA to deal with them if anything goes wrong and your friend is not there permanently to get it sorted out with eBay.

In the end, any mobile you choose except SE, the saving is around 7-8k if your friend managed to get the phone without customs. Do you think it’s worth it to save 7-8k, get a phone without warranty, might get stuck in customs and will almost save nothing? Your call!

He will be traveling to Bangalore but not sure if he will be taking a direct flight to Bangalore or to other city and then take another flight to Bangalore.

Port of entry is what matters, i.e. the customs will be handled in the first Indian city he lands at regardless of any connecting domestic flights later on.

Sorry for the late response to your tag, but seems like you have already got good info from both @raghupro and @getready.

Seems like you are now open to buying things other than phones, so I will add that niché items have a much larger price difference in the US as compared to popular items like the phones you have mentioned. Fitness bands (if you are into them) are one such example. As I mentioned in another thread recently, don’t try to buy things just for the sake of getting them cheaper from the US. I am looking to upgrade my current phone – Moto G 1st Gen (more than 2 years old). Even though it’s working fine, i am stuck with 16gb with no option to expand memory. Also nowadays it’s taking some time to open certain apps & finding some sluggishness while multitasking. So i am looking to upgrade to a smartphone which can work flawlessly for atleast another 2 years. Also as i have got used to stock Android with Moto G, i wanted to go with Nexus devices but as @getready mentioned that Nexus devices prices will fall further after launch of new Nexus in 1-2 months. So as per his suggestions, the only good deal that i found was LG G5 which is much cheaper compared to prices in India. Right now confused as to which mobile to buy, i would also like your opinion as to which you find best of the lot? or Is it better to wait for few months? https://cdn1.desidime.com/assets/textile-editor/icon_confused.gif

You’ve got me there! I am also not able to make such decisions when it comes to the ever changing mobile phones. https://cdn2.desidime.com/assets/textile-editor/icon_toungueout.gif

@gambitrite consider earphones if you use them quite often. I got a Jaybird X2, Klipsch X4i, Audio-Technica ATH-ANC23 and a Parrot Zik 3. All of them cost much lesser than in India, especially the Jaybord X2 that retails for around 15k on Amazon India but costs just around $90 in US.

Out of the lot the best sounding ones were Zik 3.0 but cost a bomb. But the one that impressed me the most is Audio-Technica ATH-ANC23 which cost me around $40 but sound crazy good.

Coming back to the phone. What’s your budget like? I created a separate thread in local deals section for S7/S7 edge. The price in local market is quite good. S7 Edge for cash transaction is around 49.5k and S7 for 43k with Indian warranty and bill in Hyderabad. The same for 10% cash back transaction with debit/credit card is 45k for S7 and 53k for S7 edge. Much better deal than getting it from US.

@gambitrite Just two general points with regards to your post right above this one:

(1) Make sure whatever phone you import has 4G/3G bands compatible with the ones being used by Indian mobile service providers.

(2) 5 TB for only $109 is a steal!

Yes… we need to check for 4g Lte bands – Band 3(1800mhz) and Band 40(2300mhz) which currently are used by Indian telecoms. This phone supports 1800mhz only.
