Recently faced similar issue…

1) Go for Split AC
2) Choose only 3 or 5 star Ac depending on your usage
For home usage like 4-5 hours a day go for 3 star
For office use like 10-12 hours a day go for 5 star
3) choose size of ac depending on room size.
For a normal room of 15×12×12, an AC of 1.5 ton is good.
4) for brands go in thia order
Hitachi ( costly as compared to others)
Voltas
LG/Samsung
Blue Star ( not good, installed at fathers offc)

I would suggeat go for Voltas. ( value for money)

the main problem of split ac is that it destroy your room setting but wibdow ac not need that much of arrangement.
it is difficult to do service of split ac.
so if u have window then i prefer u go with window ac

wow https://cdn2.desidime.com/assets/textile-editor/icon_rolleyes.gif i have to go back to learning school! Interesting reveals yeah:

window units are unsafe :eyesout: !
(i have also heard that breathing, eating and sleeping too is unsafe)

Split types are ‘more’ difficult to service.
For whom?

and Sameer, is this for an Attic or Basement?

The only other common rooms that dont have windows are if you in solitary confinement.
https://cdn0.desidime.com/attachments/photos/367209/medium/2236126-aoa_isolationroom.jpg?1481007874
(baths and toilets do have some ventilator or something)

AND
star ratings making any big difference

First things, choice between split type versus window model is purely functional one.
and depends on the setting of the aircon and individual preference.

This means, besides the usual price, technical details , you can look at needs like aesthetics, space availability and expected life over which it will work.

Window aircons are usually cheaper, their energy efficiency though may be lesser.

Window air-conditioners will need a dedicated space usually at upto 7 feet height, so will block a window or if installed by breaking a wall, may fall foul with furniture positioning.

1] I suggest you chuck the model name or tonnage mentioned on marketing literature and enquire or check for rated BTU

[12000 British Thermal units is one tonne. Refer: http://www.unitconversion.org/power/btus-it--pe... ]

2] Check for room volume [say 120 square feet || 12 by 10 room of about 9 feet ceiling height with moderate furniture].
12000 BTU is sufficient for the above specifications.
>>> chuck the star rating too. Those are made under lab conditions. No people in the room, no intermittent opening of the door.
>>> rather look at your locations mapping. how much direct sunlight does it take?. just rising sun, or late noon or half the day etcetera etcetera.
>>> is the ceiling opento weather? say it is a bungalow of G+1 and the AC is for top floor, VERSUS it is in a building with three four floors above you.

>>> if the room gets seasonal north winds or is usually cool or the walls do not get too much peak sun, even a two star would suffice for a small room for average use of 7-8 hours.

3] Are you aware of Cube type aircons? These are cheaper than a standard split airconditioner while giving some of the advantages of split ac.
[ refer to appended links]

4] buying offline sometimes can give you an equally good deal. People looking to book the sale in previous year(31st March) or if you do not want to show it in your tax return (cash payment). some master dealer can give you cheapest overall (final) quote.

>>>> some recent example (April 1st week): Daikin FTKE35GV1 (Inverter function) were quoted about 33500 plus about 2000/- for paraphernalia like installation, nitrogen flushing, stand and some additional piping

5] do look at whether the brand has its ‘own service centre’ in your location for your type of unit. The franchisee or the distributor/ retailer just hire some local kids and send them for installations and future service (sometimes they are not serious or dedicated)

6] split ac’s offer better specialised features like humidity control, the higher upfront outgo gets repaid in few years in form of power savings, the inverter models have better EER.
older people, asthmatics or people with breathing trouble find it more difficult if the AC makes it more dry without moisture control and maintain certain humidity level

The thought that Split ac need more money or time or effort to service, in my understanding is a fallacy.
Just imagine, the indoor unit is hanging up in a place, just the grill is to be removed, the blower drum cleaned. no moving of the unit.
the outdoor unit does not need much more than, a water jet spray.

Companies manipulate the market by change the same units model number every year and claiming a new model

for cosmetic changes, paying a steep price for a 2015 or late 2014 model is not worth it.
just check if the brand is serious in the business, the coil must be copper (now a days the trend is to use aluminium)

7] Check the technicals like BTU (tonnege), EER (energy effeciency ration || AND NOT the star rating)
If taking a HOT ^ COLD model; check the CoP of the heating function.

For Eg.: Panasonic’s CS-YE12PKY was also bought
Just check the table and the real technical details some manufacturers givr http://www.panasonic.com/in/consumer/home-appli...

The Brand and our own finances matter.

Personal views:

Mitsubishi, having seen from a 1.5 tonne to a 100 tonne equipment and the pride that they take in what hey make.
can vouch for the fact, that if used as instructed and under proper service, the damn thing never develops a snag.

But then again the brand is not that much retail oriented and are snooty. They are happy keeping key good customers, than the masses, so price is out of ordinary.

The upper aspirational mass segment is with Korean Cheabols (LG Samsung)

Hitachi offer the price with installation charges included (some stand or such costs are extra, standard pipe length free, thereafter chargeable). service and charges once out of warranty is a factor to look at. (to check: local service office is of brand or third party)

Amongst home grown brands, there really are not much to choose, Bluestar and Tatas.
contrary to some previous poster, I think Bluestar has survived well and in-fact their ceiling mount cassette type models (banks, hospitals, office foyer ) are still amongst the larger selling ones.

Voltas are bit of a direction-less organisation now. (their forte was mainly to crack into government undertakings with bulk orders.)

whether you choose total window AC or go for a Cube split ac or a pure split AC.

make it a point that they use synthetic material heavy bush or anti vibration pads https://www.google.com/search?hl=en&site=imghp&... wherever required.

In split AC outdoor unit, usually they just grout the body to the stand with the screws. principally this is NOT a very recommended thing . at worst they can cut a bigger pad to size and make a hole for the screws to pass and use this cushioning.

Keep the outdoor unit such that at least 8-9 inches clearance from wall. leaves enough room to maneuver for service.
and if in a building, less chance of trouble at the time of repair or painting work. The contractor/workers may otherwise crib that the approach to the wall is blocked and society may ask you to move the unit.

although, brands say standard piping. most installations happen from locally procured ‘kits’.

do check the copper pipe is of reputed make, gauge and the diameter is NOT less than Brand recommendation.

1/1.5 tonne Hot and Cold models (Inverter type) are around 43-44000 from a mid range to top range international brand.

Caution: The inverter type models’ run the risk of Indian power supply surges. Use of a stabiliser of good quality is recommended.
(otherwise the PCB or some IC may develop a snag during fluctuation)

Always consider final cost to you after installation labour, material, visit charges, extra gas if needed and also the cost of a stabilser if you take one.

compare these when doing research, between different models

Reference:

1] check the kind of terms that are standard amongst all brands and have the same meaning: EER, BTU, CoP (Heating), Air Circulation capacity (CFM), Material used in condensation coil (Copper versus aluminium), Humidity control.
Links: http://www.panasonic.com/in/consumer/home-appli...
http://www.energyrating.gov.au/products-themes/...

2] even taking a model just earlier than the latest model is okay. the brands job is to keep launching Models every year and price them higher because they can remove odour, virus, mold or make you ten years younger etcetera. THAT does not mean that the very model that was sold just before that is any less in performance or efficiency.

3] Ignore star ratings as far as performance is concerned. For price purpose, lowers star/ previous years model = cheaper. Inverter ACs do NOT need tar rating.

It seems, presently only Panasonic came up with a worthy solution in this space.

You do not buy any of this, any self respecting installation and repairs entity ought to have these or know where to buy them

refrigeration copper tubes too have local makes versus better manufacturers. enquire from independent installation boys about good ones.
look for the suitable gauge and ask them to use that make/ gauge / diameter

Would be curious to know what you finally narrowed down to.
so would appreciate if you update us with the same.

oh yeah..I do NOT have any firect or indirect interest to push any brand or business
nor associated with any.

Have seen Videocon kill the Electroloux brand. makes one sad. now that Koryo or whatever and haier and Llyod and Electrosucks all are like the brands of the urban slums.

Have used various brands and with different views.

one of the early LG models (those were still imported without being knocked down/ pre assembled at home) still runs after what 12-13 years.

you respect the gadget/ appliance; it reciprocates. timely service. cleaning the filters and checking that gas is okay (in split type, one has to rely on the technician to do proper welding of the copper pipe)

given a choice, would much rather stay/work in dwellings made of natural materials like clay, lime and molassas binding
rather than concrete and steel structures.
and have natural thermal insulation and ventilation.

What Chopchop said is enough for making an informed decision. Don’t go for star rating, for ACs they hardly matter. I am using Panasonic split AC, Onida window, Voltas window. For me Onida nad Panasonic work the best. Onida is 8 years old and not created a single problem.

Also, there a relatively new product for the Indian market, it’s called portable AC. I have to buy a new AC too and I was looking into it too. You can move it to any room whenever you like, it has wheels. It usually comes with a tank to store the moisture/water or a portable tank which can be fit outside the window. Ofcourse, you have to pay a little premium.
