Xiaomi Redmi 4 with 5-inch 1080p display, Snapdragon 625 SoC and 4,100mAh battery goes official

Xiaomi has been on a launching spree over the past couple of months. In September, the brand launched the Snapdragon 821-powered Mi 5s and Mi 5s Plus smartphones. Most recently, the company unveiled the Mi Note 2 flagship, and the Mi MIX bezel-less concept smartphone. Today at an event in its home market of China, the brand has added a new budget smartphone to its portfolio with the launch of the Redmi 4, which comes as a successor to the Redmi 3S Prime (review).

The Xiaomi Redmi 4 flaunts a premium metal unibody design and a fingerprint sensor located at its rear. The phone sports a 5-inch display bearing a resolution of 1,920 × 1,080 pixels. It is backed by a 2GHz octa-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 625 processor, clubbed with 3GB of RAM. The storage capacity on board is 32GB, which can be further increased up to 128GB by inserting a microSD card.

The camera department includes a 13-megapixel primary shooter with a dual-LED flash and PDAF, and a 5-megapixel selfie snapper. In terms of connectivity, the phone offers 4G, VoLTE, dual-SIM slots, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 4.1, and GPS. It’s fuelled by a beefy 4,100mAh battery. Software-wise, the device runs MIUI 8 based on Android Marshmallow.

The company has also launched a standard variant of the Redmi 4. This one comes with a 5-inch HD display, a Qualcomm Snapdragon 430 processor, 2GB of RAM, and 16GB of internal memory. The rest of its specifications are similar to the high-end variant.

The Xiaomi Redmi 4 has been priced at RMB 899, roughly Rs 8,880, and will be available in silver, grey and gold variants. Its Snapdragon 430-powered model will set you back by RMB 699, around Rs 6,900. The phones will go on sale in China starting November 7th. Looking at the popularity of the Redmi series, we expect the company to bring these phones to India soon.

The specs of the standard version do not seem any different from the Redmi 3S. Except perhaps the fingerprint sensor, which isnt clear from the article.

For the first time this year, Xiaomi launched two iterations of its Redmi series in 2016. In the first half of this year, we have seen the launch of popular Redmi Note 3 smartphone; and in the second half, the company came up with Redmi Note 4. Unlike the Redmi Note 3, the availability of the Redmi Note 4 is only limited to China. But the latest news suggests the new Redmi Note 4 to be launched soon here in India. As seen with the earlier launched Redmi smartphones, the upcoming Redmi Note 4 will also come with a change in the processor from the Chinese variant.

MediaTek powered by Xiaomi smartphones are banned in India after the launch of original Redmi Note 4G smartphone. The Chinese variant of Redmi Note 3 came with Helio X20 SoC, while the Indian variant came with Snapdragon 650 octa-core processor. Talking about the Redmi Note 4, the Indian variant is expected to feature Snapdragon 625 octa-core processor instead of Helio X20 octa-core processor. The device sports a 5.5-inch Full HD (1920 × 1080 pixels) IPS display with a 2.5D glass on top and offers a pixel density of 403 ppi.

The Snapdragon 625 octa-core processor comes with a clock speed of 2GHz and coupled with Adreno 506 GPU. Just like the Redmi Note 3, the upcoming device might also come with 2GB and 3GB RAM variants with 16GB and 32GB of storage respectively. It sports a 13MP rear camera with LED flash and a 5MP front camera. The device is backed by a 4,100mAh non-removable battery and that might also support fast charging technology. Though these are the similar specifications as on its predecessor, the new Redmi Note 4 comes with a new design.

It sports a metal body with chamfered edges which might offer better grip than the rounded edges on Redmi Note 3. Just below the right camera is the fingerprint sensor that might come with even more features with the coming Nougat update. The company will be coming with Android 6.0.1 Marshmallow with MIUI 8 out of the box. After launching the Redmi Note 4 next month in India, we might soon expect the new MIUI updated based on Android 7.0 Nougat. The Nougat based MIUI beta is already released for Mi 5, and soon we might see the public launch.

At the CES 2016, the company announced to bring out something for the global markets. While the company already launched the Mi Box Android set-top box in the U.S market and also sells few accessories in the European markets. Xiaomi is also expected to launch the flagship Mi 6 smartphone at the MWC 2016. It might come powered by Snapdragon 835 SoC and will also support Qualcomm’s latest fast charging technology, Quick Charge 4.0.
