Personal Opinion : -
During last tranche of April 20-24 it was priced 4639 per gram (4,589 per ram for online) So it is 1% cheaper this time. I think this is pretty good time to invest in it considering share market has started going down and gold price is gonna increase only now.

For physical gold you will be charged making charges, safety/storage is also a big concern. but in this case you will also get 2.5% interest annually + on maturity capital gains are tax free.

Why so? because of lockin?
but you will have to pay capital gains tax in that case..!!

capital gains tax is levied when it is bought and sold/ redeemed by RBI. i.e both legs of the transactions has to be completed then only cap gain is levied. I recommended just the purchase of SGB from the secondary market
Try to track one of the earlier tranches of SGB u will find the offer rates to be cheaper than that offered by RBI.

This will also reduce the lockin period depending on how old ur purchased SGB tranche is.

Okay, Didn’t knew that, Thanks for info.
So if we buy from secondary market and sell it after 2-3 years, shall we pay capital gain tax in that case?

Anyway locking period is myth in case of gold investment I think, generally gold investment is not for liquidity or gains, that’s why it should be minimum (~10% of total investment).

that is your perspective
last 2 years investment in gold bonds have delivered massive 30-40% return and still counting.

also, buy it from anywhere rbi or market, if they are sold before 8 years Cap gains shall be levied. as u may be aware RBI opens a redemption window starting 5th year even if u avail redemption by RBI before 8 years cap gains shall be levied

the only way to escape cap gains is holding till 8 years and redemption is made by RBI.

and dont be scared of cap gains if they are long term indexation benefit will squeeze your tax liability. However short term cap gains are eaters of return.

As checked in zerodha or any other broker , the previously issued gold bonds have different prices at which they were trading in the secondary market . In what basis those prices are calculated and traded ?

Any one having idea about this please try to explain

Tnx
